Your 2013 Flying In Review

Mon Dec 02, 2013 10:29 pm

Well, barring any unexpected travel, my flying is done for 2013. I flew more segments this year (60) than ever before, and I thought I would put together some statistics on my year of flying. Please feel free to add your own summaries. I thought about adding this to the flown/booked flights thread, but it seemed different enough to warrant a new thread.

First, my 2013 route map, courtesy of GCmap.com:
http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r577/bigredzeppelin/2013FilghtMap.gif

The stats:
60 total flight segments (9 personal, 51 business)
50 segments operated by DL or DL Connection
4 segments operated by QX
4 segments operated by UA Express.
2 segments operated by WS

43,497 statute miles flown per gcmap.com. This is second to 2012, when I flew 46,814 miles.

Longest segment: DTW-SEA (1927 miles per gcmap.com)
Shortest segment: SEA-PDX (129 miles)

Most frequent city pairs:
BZN-MSP (11x)
BZN-SLC (8x)

7 New Airports in my Log: PDX, WYS, SGU, IAD, RDU, MCO

Types Flown:
1xB736*
1xB73G
5xB738
4xB752
1xB753*
1xB763
3xA319
8xA320
10xCR2
6xCR7
4xCR9
2xE120*
1xE170*
2xE175
3xMD88
4xMD90
4xQ400*
*=new type in my log.

I logged registrations on 57 of the 60 sectors, with 53 unique registrations. Four aircraft were flown twice this year: N441SW (CR2), N477CA (CR2), N609SK (CR7), and N805SK (CR9).

2013 was an unprecedented year of flying for me—several new airlines, airports, aircraft, cities, and countries. In particular, I flew with Emirates (and hence connected through Dubai) for the first time; and flew east of India and west of Hawaii for the first time, with Cathay Pacific via HKG. I also accomplished my longest flight thus far: CX's nonstop from HKG - LAX at 13hrs 34mins.

Here's my route maps (Generated by the Great Circle Mapper - copyright © Karl L. Swartz.):

       Domestic / Regional

       International

Statistics
28 total flight segments (all personal — I'm a kid)
7 segments flown with ERAU Prescott (noncommercial — as part of a summer camp)
6 segments flown with DL or DL Connection
    3 segments flown with US
    2 segments flown with VX
    2 segments flown with EK
    2 segments flown with UA
1 segment flown with each of the following: G4, CX, LH, KA, DE, AA

31,051 miles / 49,972 kilometers flown in total

Longest segment: HKG - LAX (7,256 miles)
Shortest segment: LAX - LAS (236 miles)
PRC - PRC (40 miles - first flight at summer camp) noncommercial

Most frequent city pairs:
PRC - PRC (4x) noncommercial
all commercial flight segments are (1x)

New airports visited: FAT, SLC, WYS (me too), PHX, AZA, PRC, DVT, TUS, SJU, FCO, VCE, DXB, HKG

Aircraft types flown:
(7x) C172* noncommercial
(4x) E120*
(3x) A319
(2x) A321
(2x) A320
(2x) B763
(2x) B77W*
(2x) MD83
(1x) for each of the following: A333*, B738, B752, B772
* = new aircraft type flown

2013 was a good year for my law school flying as the previous two years had little flying. I actually had a full 365 days of ZERO flights from July 2011 to August 2012 (my first year of law school) and my only trip outside of Miami-Dade and Broward county was a 2 day road trip to Orlando. Law school can really suck sometimes. Here was 2013 for me. No flights planned for December. I am happy to say I will be doing some great flying in 2014 early on with my first trip to HKG, HND and NRT currently booked!

I did 65 flights in 2013. That is a total of 327.358 miles and a total of 640 hours.

Boeing 747-400: 36 flights
Boeing 747-8i: 27 flights
Airbus 320: 2 flights (private)

And couple more 744 and 748 flights coming up in December.

And here my total statistic:

Very little for me quietest year since 2004.

1. 02FEB___Virgin Australia___VA1102___Brisbane (BNE) > Newcastle (NTL)___Fokker 100 VH-XWS___*Optd by Alliance Airlines
2. 03FEB___Aeropelican___OT5010___Newcastle (NTL) > Sydney (SYD)___BAe Jetstream J32 VH-OTE
3. 03FEB___Virgin Australia___VA981___Sydney (SYD) > Brisbane (BNE)___Boeing 737-800 VH-YFG

Although aside from that I did do a 12 night cruise around Melanesia.

Next year should be a little more busy with plans to visit Adelaide, Auckland and possibly Alice Springs

Sorry for the rant, but as much as I hate it when supermarkets start playing Christmas music in mid October, I believe it is pretty useless to have all these yearly reviews when there's still a significant chunk of the year ahead of us.

I walk out of a shop if they play Christmas music in October.

But this year my travel can be summed up simply. Feast... then fast: 35k miles before May and then nothing since, my longest time on the ground for more than a decade. Was planning on getting away at the end of last month but I just haven't had the time.

This has been my worst flying year in the last 6 years...

Only 28 legs total, to 15 airports, 13 aircraft types, 3 countries... In previous years I've done hundreds of segments. I guess things change when you actually get a life, haha!

That was my commercial flying this year. Probably won't get any more commercial, perhaps, if I find a weekend before christmas, I'll take a trip to somewhere in WA, maybe ALH, EPR or BME.

I'm also a student pilot, and have had plenty of flights in both Cessna 152s and Cessna 172s, mostly departing and arriving at JAD, with a couple flights to places like BUY, RTS and YMUL. And before Christmas I'll have some more flights (and a few more regional airports).

A relatively slow year for me. No international travel so far 48,796 NM logged. I have a few more flights planned before the year is up, hopefully including a quick trip across the Atlantic.

Aircraft flown this year include:

15x MD-88
13x 757-200
6x 767-300
4x MD-90
4x B1900D
4x SF-340B
2x 757-300
2x C402

...and a smattering of other assorted types, including the 717, DC-9-50, and various models of 737 and A32x.
I reject your reality and substitute my own...

Fairly quiet year for me. I don't have much reason to fly places quite yet, but this year so far, I've flown:

United (ExpressJet) EMB-135 KGRK - KIAH
United Airlines 757-300 KIAH - KSFO
United Airlines A320 KSFO - KPDX
American Airlines MD-80 KPDX - KDFW
American (ExpressJet) CRJ-200 KDFW - KGRK

Soon to come in a couple weeks:

American Eagle ERJ-145 KGRK - KDFW
American Airlines MD-80 KDFW - KPDX

So not a super busy year for me.. but.. but... I got to fly the MD-80, which will sooner than later be gone... So I'm happy about this!

It's been a fairly busy year for me. I had my first "real" trips to Asia (I'd already crossed the Bosphorus in Istanbul in February last year  ) when I went to India and China. I also flew twice back to the US and covered some interesting sectors here in Europe.

Probably not quite done, but so far, it can be summed up as more than I had hoped, less than I had feared, so I guess it isn't too bad.

RE: Your 2013 Flying In Review

Sun Dec 08, 2013 8:47 pm

Well, I just finished up yesterday, so now I can post what I've done.

46 segments, including a flight from a diversion airport to the destination (TUL-OKC) and an air turn back (scheduled IAH-DEN). All following stats include these two little oddballs, unless otherwise noted.

Airlines: United: 36 (12 mainline, 24 regional); Frontier: 5; Southwest, Delta: 2; American: 1

Airports (new ones marked with *): OKC ORD AVP EWR TUL IAH DEN LAX LAS MDT* MIA JFK ATL

Aircraft (new ones marked with *): E-145: 13; CR7: 7; A319: 5; A320: 4; 752, 738: 3; Dash-8-Q200, Q300, 788*, 73G: 2; 739, 772, 764: 1

Miles: 31,742, not including the miles put on by the ATB

And as a little icing on the cake, my longest flight of the year by time was my last one, yesterday's EWR-OKC at 4:03. A 140-knot headwind will do that.
Good night, and keep watching the skis. Uh, skies.

As I've said in the Flown/Booked Flights thread, I don't get to fly nearly as much as many of you, unfortunately, and my itineraries are far less interesting. Nevertheless, this was a big year for me, personally.

New country visited: United Kingdom
New airports: IAD, LHR, IND
New types: 772, 763
UA 924: first widebody flight, first TATL flight

Airlines flown: United, Southwest, SkyWest, ExpressJet

Miles flown: 9,055 (est)

RE: Your 2013 Flying In Review

2013 was a record year for me in terms of number of flights and distance flown. I also managed to not earn any elite status – that’s what you get for not living in a hub airport. 2014 is almost certainly going to break my 2013 stats from the trips I’m already planning

My stats, counting one more scheduled flight:

1) Number of flights: 31 (all USA domestic)
2) Total flight distance: 30,885 miles
3) Longest flight: SEA-HNL (2677 miles)
4) Shortest flight: PIT-IAD (182 miles)
5) Airports (14): SEA, DEN, DFW, MSP, ORD, DTW, PIT, IAD, DCA, BWI, LGA, BOS, MCO, HNL
6) Airlines (11): Alaska (3x), American (3x), Delta (3x), United (6x), US Airways (2x), Southwest (1x), JetBlue (1x), Compass (1x), Republic (4x), ExpressJet (3x), American Eagle (1x), Air Wisconsin (3x)
6a) Airlines by marketing code (7): Alaska (3x), American (4x), Delta (4x), United (10x), US Airways (8x), Southwest (1x), JetBlue (1x)
7) Aircraft types (13): B733 (1x), B738 (9x), B752 (1x), A319 (3x), A320 (3x), MD82 (1x), E145 (1x), E170 (2x), E175 (2x), E190 (1x), CRJ2 (5x), CRJ7 (1x), DH8D (1x)

Most visited airport: PIT (16x)
Most frequent city pair: PIT-BOS (6x)

Most painful flight: EV IAD-LGA CRJ2, window seat. Mercifully, it is a short flight.
Longest delay: ***only*** 90 minutes. YX BOS-PIT, due to late arriving aircraft and fog at Logan.

Oldest aircraft flown: AA MD82 N574AA, delivered October 6, 1991
Newest aircraft flown: B6 E190 N353JB “Blue La La” delivered October 22, 2012

New airports: (3) LGA, HNL, DFW
New airlines: (2) ExpressJet, American Eagle
New aircraft: (4) MD82, E145, CRJ7, DH8D

Thanks to gcmap.com for the map:

RE: Your 2013 Flying In Review

Sat Dec 28, 2013 7:16 pm

2013 was a milestone year for me. I flew more this year (both segments and miles) than I have in any other year. In the miles case, I flew more this year than all other years combined.

A big part of that was I took my first TATL and TPAC flights this year. 7 of them in fact.

I flew to or through 27 different airports this year, 15 of them for the first time. That includes my first diversion, to Rochester, Minnesota en route back home to Minneapolis.

As an employee, I was lucky enough to enjoy Business class on all ocean crossings, including the Upper Deck on my first (and currently only) 747 flight.

I flew on a variety of aircraft types this year, including the 737 (-7 and -8), 747, 757 (-2 and -3), 767 (-3 and -3ER), 777 (-2LR, -2ER, -3ER), A319, A320, A330-3, MD88, MD90, E145, CR2, CR7, CR9, E170, E175, and DC9-5.

My grant totals are:

135,510 miles flown
82 flights (62 domestic, 20 international)
278 hours, 35 minutes airborne

I sat in the Window 48 times, the Aisle 26 times, and the Middle only 8 times. 38 times in Economy, 20 in Economy +, 14 in Business, and 10 in Domestic First.

I flew on 7 different airlines this year (Delta, Pinnacle, SkyWest, ExpressJet, Chautauqua, Compass, and Virgin Australia.

My favorite experience was flying Virgin Australia in Business Class from LAX-MEL-LAX. Thanks to a mistake fare, I was able to enjoy their Business Class product for a whopping $104 Round Trip.

Meeeh...

All my flights, up to now:

http://i39.tinypic.com/2zp0082.jpg

bsl-ltn-ltn; zrh-jkh-zrh; bsl-dus; gva-sxf-gva; gva-bud-gva; bsl-ams-bsl; zrh-rho-zrh

To and from RHO: 757 by Belair

To and from JKH: Avro RJ 100 by LX

Everything else: 319 and 320 by U2 and W6

Of those, only GVA-BUD-GVA was in 2013, and BSL-DUS was in in the end of December 2012.

My flights in 2013 - not a bad effort, although might need to try and get to Europe or the USA in 2014 to even things up a bit! LOL.

It's been a rather weird yet succesfull year of flying for me... Almost no flights to poland and thus very few LH and LO flights. Also not a single transatlantic flight... Still, totalling just under 50 segments, I didn't fly a lot less than the years before!?!

Flew 21 flights, 15,529 miles.

Flew LX, SK & BA short haul for the first time. Got the EI A319 in, a BA 734 and an SK MD80 which was retired shortly after I flew her.

New airports were LGW, CPH, BRU, TXL, ZRH & SXF. Not bad but here's to more flying in 2014!
