Ever Flown On An Ill-fated Aircraft?

Sun Dec 22, 2013 1:03 am

Howdy. I noticed some of this in a different thread, and I thought it would be interesting to know if anyone has been on an ill-fated aircraft.

I actually have and it came to my surprise. I was digging through some VERY old boarding passes because my dad saves everything, and thanks to the magic of the FAA I was able to pull some tail numbers I had flown on for my log book, some even upwards of 15 years later.

In 1998 I was traveling home from Maine (BGR to be exact) connecting in EWR. I flew home on Continental Flight 393, an MD-82 registered N72824. I sat in Seat 22A. Flash to last year, 2012. I find this information and go here on Airliners.net to see pictures of it, mostly for my own amusement, and then I read the comment "Aircraft crashed on August 16, 2005 near Machinques, Venezuela, killing all 160 people on board while operating for West Caribbean Airways."

Crazy. All these years later and I find out about it.

What about you guys. Any similar experiences?

I've flown on (as a non-rev) and worked on (at DL) N612UA, the second plane to hit the World Trade Center. I remember thinking how much nicer it was than our 762s. Those In-Seat video players were state of the art in 1996.

DL painted that A/C from Saul Bass to Battleship. It was very tired looking and faded when it rolled in, but looked great when it left. The only place where the paint wasn't faded was around the L-1 door, where someone had touched up the tri-colored stripe.

I've flown on lots of aircraft that crashed later. I've flown on almost 1000 different frames in the last 25 years, many of them old or in "exotic" countries, so it's just a matter of probabilities that many of them have crashed in the meantime.
Among the more shocking ones to me:

Just months after I flew on it, I found a photo on the internet of the exact row / window I sat at... it looked like this:

On another occasion, I flew on this Fokker 28 on a domestic flight.

The pilots let me ride in the cockpit, it was great fun. Just 10 days later, they crashed the aircraft while landing; one of the accident causes was "failure to observe sterile cockpit rule", wonder what that means and who they had in the jump seat at that time. It's almost impossible to find out anything on that accident because the same airline later crashed another aircraft of the same type flying the same flight number and route. All of the info I find on the internet is about that other crash.
Here's the one of the plane I flew on: http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=20050407-0

Flew aboard N513AU (USAir 737-300) between BDL and PHL about a year before it went down.

Not a true "ill-fated aircraft" as it was indeed retired from service....I flew aboard N308EA several times back when it was owned by Eastern. Delta eventually bought it, and when they retired it, the L-1011 was cut up and the "wreckage" was used as props for the TV show "LOST".

As far as I know I've never flown on an airplane that later had a serious crash. The closest I can come up with is that according to the comment on this photo I've flown on the CR7 that had the infamous run in with an Air France A380 at JFK, after it was repaired and returned to service.

Two aircraft I have flown on were involved in hull-loss accidents.

In 2008 I flew on The Dash-8-100 TF-JMB (Former N963HA with Piedmont) She skidded off the runway in Nuuk, Greenland, 3 years later. I did see her again when I visited Nuuk in 2012, covered up without titles in a remote part of the ramp. Quite a sad sight!

The second one had a more spectacular ending. It involved the Cessna 172 PH-TOC, which was based at Ameland Airport (EHAL), on one of the Northern Dutch Wadden-islands. I flew on TOC in 1998, and it's the first flight I have active memories of, and the first flight in my logbook. I was 9 years old at the time. A few years later, TOC was stolen by an escaped mental patient who tried to fly it to CPH. His body and the nosegear of TOC were later recovered, the body washed up ashore and the nosegear was found floating in the Northsea.

N2969 the Chalks Ocean Airways plane which crashed in December of 2005 taking off from Watson Island. Flight 101. Always enjoyed flying chalks and always felt very safe knowing it was a flying boat. That crash would end up killing the airline too. I was on a cruise ship leaving that day but was leaving from Port Everglades not the Port of Miami which ended up being shut down for hours due to the crash.

I've never checked back through my full log, but I know of a few:

UR-WRO, flew it IEV-CWC-KBP on 7th July 2008:

Crashed at Donetsk on 13th February 2013 with the loss of 5 lives:

LV-CEJ, flew it COR-ROS on 12th October 2010:

Crashed en route to Comodoro Rivadavia on 18th May 2011 with the loss of all 22 onboard:

PK-MZO, flew it SUB-DPS on 23rd September 2012:

Crash Landed at Kupang on 10th June 2013, no fatalities:

Just the one ( that I know of) . 24 August 2008 Itek Air crashed a former Air New Zealand 737-219 on the approach to Bishkek. I remember having flown it back in the 1990s at least once WLG-AKL back when it was ZK-NAS.

While I (AFAIK) haven't flown on any planes that later crashed, I did fly on N471WN/N286WN (the registration changed following the crash), the WN 73G that crash landed at MDW back in 2005, killing a little boy in a passing car, to BWI last year.

I might have the wirdest incident.

Flew on N865AS (OO CR2 ops for DL) from SLC to BUR. Just a month later a pilot attempted to steal the airplane at its RON station. Though, the pilot never got far as he ran it into a parking lot, and then committed suicide.

I also flew on about 1000 airframes but had I know of at least five...
PH-DDA a Dutch Dakota Association DC-3 in 1994 over Northern Holland, crashed 2 years later killing all 32
RA-86074 an Aeroflot Il-86 in 1996 (a long day flying SVO-BKU-DEL-BKK), landed without undercarriage in Dubai in 2001, no fatalities.
EC-BHU a Binter Canarias ATR-72 in 2000, crashed in Cuba with Aerocaribbean in nov 2010 killing all 68 on board
N2969 a Chalk's Ocean Mallard in 2001, crashed near Miami in dec 2005 killing all 20 on board
CU-T1283 a Cubana Il-62M in 2007 SDQ-HAV, had an engine disintegration in april 2008, no fatalities but close call!
XU-U4A an Antonov 24 of PMT Air from Phnomh Penh to Siem Riep in november 2006, crashed june 2007 killing all 22 on board
there might be more, I didn't check the recent crashes as closely as I used to.

The two that I know of are:

N963AS-Alaska MD-83 that crashed into the sea off of Point Mugu. I was on the plane from PDX-LAX on an earlier occasion.

N5808-United Express/Aspen Airways Convair 580 that hit a rock after landing at the Durango, Colorado airport and punched a hole in the fuselage. The plane was written off. I had flown on the plane between Denver and Durango on an earlier occasion.
Yes, I'd like to see airbus go under so Boeing can have their customers!

I don't keep track of registrations, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I did fly, however, a handful of times on EC-IQX, owned by an acquaintance:

Which was later ditched in the ocean with said acquaintance at the controls. He made an impressive water landing and survived.

The aircraft I had my first flight (as (student)pilot), as well as my first solo in recently made a hard landing and is most likely written off as repair is too expensive.

I was on that plane a month before the accident on a MEX-LAX flight. It was my first flight on a widebody too.

I flew on XA-JED, an AM DC-9 numerous times, usually from MEX to MTY, REX, CUN, and other places. It went down on August 31, 1986 over Cerritos.

I flew on XA-MEM, an MX 727 also numerous times. It went down on March 31, 1986 near Mexico State. IIRC it was one of the latest 727s to be built.

I've flown on three that I'm aware of:

1) L-1011-385-1 TriStar 1 N726DA of Delta Airlines. Flew on the aircraft in 1983, it was w/o with 137 fatalities at DFW as DL191, August 2,1985. Three of the crew members from 191 were working my flight. It's almost creepy when I look at the first flight certificate and see those crew members' signatures.

2) B-727-232Adv N473DA. I flew on this one a year before it went down, also at DFW as DL1141 on August 31, 1988. Ironically, I flew into DFW the same day as the accident and noticed the activity to the south end of the airport. Didn't find out what had happened until I reached the terminal.

3) B-737-2L9Adv. N271FL, later 5N-BFN. Flew aboard this aircraft in 1999 when it was in Frontier's fleet in the US. Later the aircraft went to Bellview Airlines where it crashed on takeoff at Lagos, Nigeria killing all 117 on board, Oct. 22, 2005.

TU-154 YR-TPJ - crashed in 1989 in Bucharest during a training flight, killing its crew of 5. I flew on that aircraft in August 1981

I flew on that aircraft in 2006.
