UA 744 ORD-JAX?

Wed Jan 01, 2014 9:50 pm

Tracking flights from ORD into JAX, noticed a 744, flt 1840 en route from ORD to JAX. Check it here on FlightAware: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/U...0/history/20140101/1945Z/KORD/KJAX

Any idea what this is all about?

Maybe to pick up the Nebraska football team after the Gator Bowl?

Finally UAL has realized that the ORD-JAX market was much bigger and removed the E170s and replaced them with hourly B747s!

Kidding!

My guess is that it was subbed out and will turn a charter flight or is itself a charter flight. I didn't check to see but it could be due to previous cancellations. I remember my ex partner telling me about DL cancelling two B753s from MSP to PHX back to back so the later flight was reinstated but with a B747 so everyone from the two flights could be accommodated. If the weather in ORD has been that bad maybe they are doing the same?

I think so, looks like it's going ORD-JAX-LNK according to United.com Flight number 1805.

1840 would be a charter, not scheduled service. I would say Nebraska football is a good bet.

Often college boosters book space on team charters for alumni to accompany the players to a big bowl game.

Well "that football team from Lincoln, Nebraska" has a pretty good following. We've been sold out for 51 years straight.

That 747 was probably for the team and band members. A few of the charters were cancelled because there really wasn't much fan interest in the bowl game after a disappointing 4-loss season plus the bowl match-up was a repeat of last years bowl opponent. Had the bowl game be in Arizona (a huge favorite for Midwesterners) or had Nebraska been in a BCS bowl, we could have filled a dozen 747s. In the 2002 Rose Bowl, Nebraska had more than 40,000 in attendance in Pasadena, CA.

It sounds like thunder but the way this year is going, it could be Godzilla!
