Hi all,

Adding myself to the list for the Monday BG4, can't wait!

I'm arriving on the 24th from ABZ at 10:20 and check in closure is at 11:00 so it'll be squeaky bum time for me on the way down. Does anyone familiar with BHX know where in the terminal the UK domestic arrivals will come out and how far check in desks 26-28 are from that exit?

Any help is much appreciated and looking forward to seeing everyone next Monday (as long as Flymaybe don't let me down!)

Arrivals and Check in are on the ground floor at BHX, when you come out of arrivals, turn left and it will be a 5 minute walk (maximum)

Just to wet your appetites, this was S2-ACR in Sylhet after its last ever rotation there. Today the aircraft made its last commercial scheduled flight from Chittagong to Dhaka - but pictures to come of that later.

Also to note, all assumptions in this thread about where the aircraft is heading after the sightseeing flights are incorrect.

Hhmmm...

As I understand it, BG were willing to hand the frame over as a museum piece, as long as they had the 3 CFM56's returned.....
Worth a few $$$$ I should imagine.

I reckon, this ship will head back to good old Dhaka.

btw, there's a strange man holding your hand in ZYL Dan.

Looking forward to my last DC10 flight next week.

I don't want to go land side I would rather stay air side after I get off my flight from CDG. Is there any way to get our BG "scenic flights" boarding passes from air side??

Would avoid me the nude scanners and all that detector crap.

Indeed, according to the Bangladesh Aviation Hub. I personally don't really mind, I'm just happy I can log the DC-10. I can imagine however that Ian Allen will be dealing with some disgruntled customers who might not be the "last to fly" after paying a premium fare.

I contacted Ian Allen and had a reply in 14 minutes:

"I have only just been forwarded an email from one of our tour managers five minutes ago regarding this
and, to be honest I am still in shock. We have emailed Biman directly to get clarification!"

I wouldn't blame Ian Allen for this as they have possibly been mislead by Biman. It wouldn't be a first for them though, I purchased a ticket for the "last" passenger VC10 flight in 1981 only to find out that there was another flight the next day!

True, but also BIMAN charged extra for the last (BG008) flight...

Any idea why the DC10 will return to DAC after the event? Are those replacement MS B777 not yet ready?

Thank you for your information. I don't really mind it. It just did not seem logical but if treated as a domestic flight then it makes perfect sense.

Detectors I don't mind. Nude scanners I have the right to refuse. I have always avoided them even if having to go through some insidious patting and strange looks.
Those who want to do evil they will always find a way. Even a metallic fork can be a weapon on board an airplane - not talking about knives. They still have metallic cutlery in J and F sometimes in Y also.
If they want to be logical with security and follow through then they should be discarding all that no matter what class of service and have only plastic cutlery even in F.
Just common sense.

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 212):

Would mean we've been fooled by their "last to fly" marketing campaign. They've sold us a product that would not be the product they advertised.

Quoting CrimsonNL (Reply 213):

Yes we paid the £50 extra to supposedly be "Last to Fly" the DC-10 as passengers. A ferry flight is different of course as they will only have their own people + private guests and media.

Quoting [email protected] (Reply 214):
"I have only just been forwarded an email from one of our tour managers five minutes ago regarding this

Where can we email Biman?
I only bought the flight to be "Last to Fly the DC-10". I have been on countless numbers of DC-10s in my flying life all airlines considered. Many many long haul hours on them.
I wouldn't have booked it otherwise if I had known there would be other passenger flights following that - no matter where in the world they would continue doing their flights.

Quoting debonair (Reply 218):
True, but also BIMAN charged extra for the last (BG008) flight...

We need to have the truth from BG on this.
The page specifying that these would indeed be the last passenger flights has been scrubbed on the Biman website.
How convenient.

From the Dhaka Tribune today. Certainly looks bleak for ACR.

“As no museum has so far expressed any interest to get the last DC-10 passenger flight for showcasing, our management is now thinking about other alternatives,” Debabrata Banik, Chief Engineer of the national flag carrier told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.

Khan Mosharaf Hosen, general manager of Biman’s public relations, said: “Biman management now plans to sale the engine and other equipments first and later on, the rest of the body will be sold out as scrap.”

Things all seems rather confused.

However, while writing this, it tends to jump a bit between 440 and 480 knots...

Not raining here anymore. Few clouds but quite clear. Hopefully it'll go over my house in a while.

If anybody has ATC feed information please post a link. I would really like to listen to the flight. Word from Kuwait stop friend said there are 4 flight deck crew on this flight.

We need to have the truth from BG on this.
The page specifying that these would indeed be the last passenger flights has been scrubbed on the Biman website.
How convenient.

Just received an email from BG - BG008 will be the last ever DC10 passenger flight!

After the event the a/c will return to DAC to be scrapped - no further flights (like stand-by bird) are possible, as all the licenses have expired.

Very, very sad to see! I would LOVE to see her in a museum...

With regard to the photos, the second one seems okay.

However, the first one is of S2-ACQ, City of Hazarat Shah Jalal, captured on rotation from Manchester some six years ago!

Thank you for the information. I guess some were just spreading rumours on FB aviation enthusiast groups. The truth is otherwise. I also had the same confirmed by one of the pilots on the Bangladesh aviation page.

Article with pictures:

The Final Passenger DC-10 Lands in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, UK: The final commercial DC-10 flight has landed on Thursday, ending a forty plus year run of scheduled passenger service around the world.

The journey began at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjala International Airport some twelve hours earlier. Locals and airport workers turned out in force to bid the last passenger DC-10 adieu, snapping photos with cell-phone cameras as the airplane taxied out for departure.

The Last DC-10: Part 1 (Dhaka to Kuwait City)

So, you want to fly on a DC-10 in 2014? Bad news. Very bad news. I hate to tell you, but that ship has sailed. Until a few days ago, that was not the case.

Arriving into Dhaka at 4:51 am, the first thing I noticed was the haze. I really have no idea where it comes from – it seems to burn off by the afternoon. The next thing I noticed about Bangladesh was how easy it was to get a visa on arrival. If you were wondering, Dhaka is only certified for CAT-1 ILS approaches. This has been known to wreck timetables and force diversions to far off points.

Hello,

I will be arriving around half past 2 on Sunday afternoon, by train, as I am on BG2 on the Monday morning. I was hoping to be able to get a few photographs of BG6 on the Sunday but am unfamiliar with Birmingham ariport. Is there anyone who knows a good spot that I can get photographs of the flight?

Also if anyone is around on the Sunday night let me know as I will have to find a place to eat at some stage so some company would be good. Early night though so im up bright and breezy for check in  .

We need to establish a base camp for drinks and catch ups. The socialising is half the fun of these things. Novotel bar? It's right by the terminal, actually has an airside view I think. Btw there's a Facebook group called "Biman DC-10" where we can discuss meeting up as well.

The flight yesterday from Dhaka was way too short, but magical for all concerned. I am glad we can give this old girl the farewell she deserves. See you in Brum!

So in the end, after it turned out the DC-10 is not going to Seattle, the whole Birmingham thing is kind of pointless for Biman, am I correct? I mean from our point of view it is excellent, but if you look at it from the airline's perspective, they're flying their plane halfway around the world with basically no benefit to them? Must be a huge loss too (as the flight back to Bangladesh is without passengers). Anyway, they're doing it because I guess they have a contract to keep, but other than that, kind of a burden for them, right?
