US Cities With The Most Non-stop Air Service

Sun Apr 13, 2014 8:30 pm

I apologize if this has been listed elsewhere, but I tried to do a search on here and Google and could not find what I am looking for other than a thread from 2006...

Is there a list of US cities that have the most non-stop air service, with the amounts of flights and city pairs served? Obviously, hub cities are at the top, but I am interested in seeing which other cities are in lets say the top 25 which would include some non hub cities.

Are those in order? Is there a database that has this information and the amount of non-stop destinations each airport serves?

I doubt it. I think that NYC or ATL would be on the top of that list if it were.

The most number of flights or the most number of unique airports to which you can fly from a particular airport? The latter would seem to answer your question more closely since frequency wouldn't really matter. If so, I imagine the easiest answer would be ATL or DFW because there would be many long, thin routes along with the usual "trunk" routes to bigger stations.

If you are looking for airports with the most domestic destinations served.. I know Atlanta is # 1 and Denver is # 2. Not quite sure about the next 23.

Would be interested to see the whole list as well.

Yes, I guess I should have worded it that way. Is there a list of the top say 25 US airports that serve the most domestic destinations? Of course the big hub airports are going to fill out the top of the list, but I am really interested in seeing the ones further down on the list that are not hubs.

I would sure think that DFW/DAL are way up on the list. I am just using your question. You asked cities not airports? You also have to look at the Los Angeles area. Lots of airports with many incoming non-stop flights. NYC is another, I would think that they would beat ATL if you include all of the airports considered to be NYC.?? I think maybe your question should be airports with non-stop service to them, not cities. Maybe I am reading the question wrong?? DFW and DAL have how many? "City" is skewing your research I think.

Good point 737tdi. I'd be happy with the list of airports then.

I wouldn't be surprised if LAS and MCO are up there too being heavy vacation destinations.
Clear skies and strong tail winds.

The FlyDenver website/press packet indicates they have service to over 180 destinations non-stop, and also provide a map and list. A lot of these cities are feeders on Great Lakes, or from other smaller cities into the hub or regional partners.

Using this as an example, the hub cities will be the first place to look especially in the central location as it provides feed from all directions.
318, 319, 320, 321, 332, 333, 388, 707, 717, 722, 732, 733, 734, 73Q, 735, 73G, 738, 7M8, 739, 752, 753, 742, 74L, 744, 762, 763, 772, 77L, 77W, 789, 142, CN1, CR2, CR7, DC8, DH2, DH8, D8Q, D10, D95, EM2, ER3, ER4, E70, 100, J31, M11, M83, M88, M90, SF3

There are about ~12 US airports with over 100 nonstop destinations served. All the big legacy hubs, LAX and JFK basically.

I believe ORD has the most, you'd be hardpressed to find more than a dozen cities that dont have direct service to ORD and most cities around the world are non-stop or one stop to ORD.

According to the CIty of Chicago CDA, ORD has flights to 140 domestic destinations and 57 international destinations for a total of 197. Although the title of the webpage is "Non-Stop Service", the description says "direct" - it seems like they are using the terms interchangeably and that they really mean "Non-Stop".

IAH for me:
More than 11,000 acres
IAH currently ranks 5th in the United States among U.S. airports with scheduled non-stop domestic and international service (over 170 destinations)
Nearly 40 million passengers traveled through IAH in 2013 and more than 50 million passengers traveled through IAH and William P. Hobby (HOU)
More than 650 daily departures occur at IAH
With nearly 30 destinations in Mexico, IAH offers service to more Mexican destinations than any other US airport
11th busiest airport in the U.S. for total passenger traffic
21 passenger airlines [ more info]
5 passenger terminals [ more info]
Terminal E for international travelers [ more info]
12 all-cargo airlines at IAH, handled more than 419,205 metric tons of cargo in 2012.
with UA adding MUC soon than will add 1 more destination.
Always look on the bright side of Life!

IAD for me:

Official Airport Designator: IAD
Airport Dedicated: November 17, 1962
Airport Property Area: 11,830 acres
Number of Airline Gates: 135 in 5 terminals
Annual Passengers (2012): 22.6 million
Nonstop U.S. Destinations: 83
Nonstop International Destinations: 50
Domestic carriers : 8
International carriers: 28, soon to be 29 with Air China
The opinions I post are of mine and mine alone, not of the airline I work for.

Add to these LAS and (perhaps to a lesser extent) FLL and MCO. They get ridiculous amounts of non-stops. Practical for these SW Nevadans who can get non-stops for a fun vacation in MOT, BIS, FSD, DLH, GRI, CID, FNT, BUF, etc.... (just some exotic examples taken from Allegiant of WN route map).
One does not get such variety of non-stop service out of NYC, for real.
How does that compare to the amount of (domestic) destinations served out the main hubs such as DFW, ATL, ORD, etc... good question.
When I doubt... go running!

DFW: 204
ORD: 140 domestic + 57 international = 197
DEN: 157 domestic + 23 international = 180
IAH: 170
IAD: 83 domestic + 50 international = 133

Great now we are getting somewhere. I still can't believe there is no official list from the DOT or something. LAX and JFK have to be up there.

LAX, maybe. Remember, NYC traffic is split between 3 airports (LGA, EWR, JFK) or 5 depending how you look at it (previous 3+HPN and ISP).
When wasn't America great?
