The Craziest Route You've Taken On Purpose

Mon Apr 21, 2014 10:47 pm

Hi everyone,

A month from now, I'm flying SFO-JFK-DFW-FSM (instead of simply SFO-DFW-FSM) in order to fly on the AA A321T. So I was curious, what's the craziest route you've done on purpose? Can't wait to hear all these...

JFK-FRA-BKK-SGN

LGA-ORD-MCI-DEN

LGA-DCA-PHL-AMS

LGA-PHL-PHX-ANC

EZE-SCL-LIM-MIA-ATL-LGA

MIA-DFW-HNL-AKL-SYD-ADL-ASP

I am sure there are more if I spend some time thinking about it

Just last week I did ISP-PHL-CLT-MYR with a four hour layover in PHL to get a 737-400 before they're retired.

I've done some wild daytrips.

MHK-DFW-PDX on AA, train to Seattle, SEA-JFK on B6, JFK-DCA-LAX, which was the inaugural DCA-LAX with AA, and LAX-DEN-ORD-MHK to finish it off.

ABQ-PHX-STL (redeye, awful!)-DFW-MHK

SXM-MIA-DCA-ORD-MHK

Trying to get to New York, the flights from ORD to HPN I wanted to get on cancelled due to weather, so I flew MHK-ORD-LAX-JFK because why not!

Coming home from FRA this January, FRA-PHL-LAX-BNA-ORD-MHK on US/AA

A lot more. My goal is to put as many crazy lines on my map as possible!

Last Friday I did ATL-SMF-SLC-CDG for no good reason. Just wanted an A330 instead of a 767 for my millionth mile flown.

DEN to SMF. Rented a car and drove to Oakland to see the Raiders play the Broncos (The Broncos won of course). Drove to SFO. Flew SFO-HND-HNL-SFO-MFR-DEN. All so I could fly a UA744 in Business Class as a non-rev.

I told myself that I would never be on the "Amazing Race" after that little trip as it took a week to recover.

RJ2, 744, 744, 738, Brasilia E120, RJ2.
Samsonite, I was way off!

Well, haven't flown anything that crazy yet but just booked a very interesting route down to Florida next fall:

KEF-BOS-EWR-PBI-TPA instead of a simple KEF-SFB, just for the heck of it.

some lala interesting routings I've taken:

KEF-YYZ-IAH-LIM instead of KEF-JFK-LIM (originally booked the latter)
LIM-YYZ-NRT
CGN-FCO-BCN-KEF instead of FRA-KEF

regards!

Mine would be:

YXU - YYZ - YUL - YHZ - YYT instead of YXU - YYZ - YYT
YCG - YVR - YEG - YYZ - YXU instead of YCG - YYC - YYZ - YXU
YXU - YYZ - YUL - POP instead of driving to YYZ and fly direct

Last year I managed to book a quite nice routing for my sons:

YXU - YYZ - IST - VIE - KSC
310, 319, 320, 321, 321N, 332, 333, 343, 345, 346, 732, 735, 73G, 738, 7M8, 744, 752, 753, 762, 763, 77L, 77W, 788, AT4, AT7, BEH, C402, CR2, CRA, CR9, DH1, DH3, DH4, E45, E75, E90, E95, F28, F50, F100, MD82, Saab 340, YAK40

Last June, was traveling from OKC to DEN, normally a short 1 hour or so flight non-stop on UA (or F9 or WN).

Instead, I booked UA OKC-IAH-DEN just so I get my first flight on a UA 787.

It was worth it! Checked in online the day before, was offered a deal to upgrade to Business-First on IAH-DEN for just $88, which of course I did. So not only my fight flight on a 787, but was able to enjoy it with a window seat up front (5A to be exact). Despite the 2 1/2 hour late takeoff from IAH due to a oil system problem, it was a very memorable flight.

EBB-JNB-ZRH-LHR-HKG-AKL instead of EBB-JNB-PER-AKL
AKL-HKG-IST-GRU-EZE instead of AKL-SCL-EZE and back PEM-CUZ-LIM-SCL-EZE-GRU-IST-HKG-AKL
MEM-IAH-MCO-PTY-EWR-LAX instead of MEM-LAX
AKL-SIN-MNL-NRT-SJC-LAX instead of AKL-LAX

I have probably done many more that are 'crazy' too, I love taking the long way around.

I don't have too many "crazy" routings, but I have gone a little out of the way to fly on a new airline or airplane.

- Drove 220 miles to MCI so I could get on a YX 717 to Florida instead of flying nonstop from my home airport (STL)

- Taking a trip to ORD-AMS (to fly upper deck on a 747), and having to buy separate tickets to go STL-ORD-STL to connect (would have been much easier to go on DL through DTW or MSP)

- STL-RSW-STL on a weekend so I could return on USA 3000 before they went out of business

- SAN-SFO-SNA (all on a STL-SAN/LAX-STL trip over the holidays) so I could fly on Reno Air (Orange County Flyer MD-90) on the SFO-SNA leg

- Took a trip to Scandinavia so I could take a trip on an AY MD-11 before they retired (routing for the trip was STL-JFK-HEL/BGO-CPH/CPH-LHR-ORD-STL

+ IAD - EWR - SFO - HNL - GUM - SPN - SEL (Continental Express, Continental, Continental Micronesia - to visit mom)
+ LAX - SLC - CVG - ATL - IAD - ATL - DFW - SLC - LAX (Delta - for a night in D.C. with friends for my birthday)

One wonderful thing about flying in Southeast Alaska is the "milk runs" that AS flies:
Instead of JNU-SEA direct, take JNU-KTN-SEA, or JNU-SIT-KTN-SEA, or JNU-PSG-WRG-KTN-SEA.
Instead of ANC-JNU direct, take ANC-CDV-YAK-JNU.
Or, go all in and do ANC-CDV-YAK-JNU (overnight) JNU-PSG-WRG-KTN-SEA rather than a direct ANC-SEA.

Instead of going with the normal 1-stop options between ARN and LAX I have flown:

ARN-LHR-PHL-DFW-LAX
ARN-AMS-BOS-DTW-LAX
ARN-CDG-SFO-SLC-BUR
LAX-SAN-MSP-AMS-ARN
LAX-AUS-DFW-LHR-ARN

Last summer during a period of 39 hours I flew:
LAX-LAS-DEN-IAH-BOS-CLE-LAS-SAN-LAS-LAX

And

MFM-TPE;TSA-TTT-TSA;TPE-HKG in 2 days (last 3 sectors in the same day) to fly MD90 and ATR72

I needed to get from BWE to CGN on 23rd February of this year. But there was a certain event going on in England, so instead of this on the train:

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/aloges/BWE-CGN.gif

I flew this:

plus, of course, BG 4.

LHR-FRA-VIE-TSR-MUC-FRA-LHR instead of just LHR-MUC/VIE-TSR and return. Also TSR-MUC-HAM-LHR which, incidentally, allowed me to experience my first go-around at HAM.

LHR-JFK-LAX with an 8 hour connection at JFK to have lunch at Sushi Yasuda in Manhattan. I was going to Vegas for a conference on this trip and decided to go to LA for a few days with the girlfriend. So the trip became LHR-JFK-LAX-LAS-DFW-LHR with the purpose of flying 744, 762, 738, 752, 77W.

Decided I needed to tick off the 747SP, in late 2001. Had failed to ride a QF SIN to CNS so ended up using SAA.

LHR - CPT - JNB - BKK - LHR , leaving on Nov 10th, back to LHR 14th.

Also, on a Republic Air Pass, on a Christmas Day in the early '80s, and back to ATL late 26th, because no-one else was around,

ATL - MSL - TUP - MEM - MEI - PIB - MEM - LAX - MSP - MKC - DFW - MEM - HSV - ATL

The first 5 sectors were to get some CV-580 time. Excellent. Slept o'night in LAX terminal, Telly Savalas was on the flight to MSP, and rode in the cockpit on the final sector.

More modest achievements these days, SYD - LHR via HKG just to tick off the A340-600.

Regards - musang

The only itinerary I've done just for the heck of it was a domestic day trip a few months back to catch the Eastern J41 :

DIJ - TLS - BOD - CDG

The rest of my "crazy" routings were mostly booked because of price/cancellations but here they are anyways:

OSL - CDG - IAH - SFO
VCE - ORY, CDG - ZRH - EWR
SFO - JFK - ZRH - CDG (with a 6 hour layover at ZRH so 24 hours overall!)
CAN - PEK - CPH - CDG

I haven't done anything super crazy, but some of my friends would disagree with that. The craziest I've done:
SLC-LAX-LHR-DME/SVO-KBP (The airport transfer at MOW was not originally planned...)
CPH-AMS-YVR-SLC-BZN
PHL-DTW-SEA-BZN

I'm expecting a trip to VIE this summer, and I've had a lot of fun playing with alternate routes to get there and back on SkyTeam itineraries. This is my current favorite, and one I'm likely to book as soon as my boss approves the trip:
BZN-MSP-JFK-MXP-LYS-VIE, BTS-PRG-AMS-LAX-SLC-BZN. LYS-VIE is operated by OS on F70, but has an AF codeshare, and that routing via LYS somehow knocks a big chunk off the price for my preferred dates.

In 1976, I non-revved from LHR to JFK, arriving in JFK on July 3, 1976. This was the night before the American bicentennial (200 year) celebration on July 4, 1976. The flight was late and we misconnected for our flight to Dallas. There were no hotels within 100 miles of NYC. We hopped a Braniff flight to South America that made a stop in MIA. We left JFK about midnight, and arrived MIA at 3 am, just to get a hotel room. The next morning we watched the tall ships parade on TV from NYC harbor where we had just been hours earlier.
Basically instead of flying JFK to Dallas, we detoured to MIA for the sole purpose of getting a hotel room for the night.

Flying from Las Vegas to Hong Kong (the wrong way around).

LAS-EWR-DUB-DXB-HKG. UA and EK.

I also paid extra to fly DUB-PHL-CLT-DCA rather than DUB-PHL-DCA, just to fly the 762 on the PHL-CLT leg.
Let's fly! Unless it's on a CRJ 200, then I'll stay down here.

Instead of flying DUB - CRL (Final destination Lille)

DUB - ZRH - BRU - CPH - DUB.

LX to ZRH was delayed and I missed me train from BRU - LIL.

I had an 8 hr layover in CPH, loved it but was exhausted. Also loved the SK MD80 back to DUB.

DUB - CDG - BCN - AF

BCN - LGW - DUB - BA

Done both of the above when returning home to DUB from GRO. I always try to look for something more interesting from BCN!

  • 1)1996 - Instead of flying ATL-LGW nonstop, I flew ATL-LAX-LHR to fly on the Virgin Atlantic codeshare LAX-LHR

  • 2)2000 - again I flew ATL-LHR via LAX to fly Virgin. My ATL-LAX flight got cancelled, so I flew ATL-CVG-LAX-LHR

  • 3)1995 - Instead of flying FRA-DFW nonstop, I flew FRA-BRU-JFK-ATL-DFW to fly on the Sabena 747-300 FRA-JFK

  • 4)1995 - 4 separate trips ATL-JFK-DFW to fly on the 767-300 Business Class both ATL-JFK and JFK-DFW

Lots of weird routings due to flight availability - Most recently just 3 years ago TPA-DCA-ATL

Quoting Cross757 (Reply 8):
Instead, I booked UA OKC-IAH-DEN just so I get my first flight on a UA 787.

Did something similar; I went through DEN instead and stayed the night in Houston. Then went in reverse the next day. Or tried to, anyway. There's a report on that, too, hint hint.

I've got one coming up: OKC-ATL-LAX-EWR so I can catch the 77L transcon. May not sound too extreme, but keep in mind those three flights will be on the same day.

If you've seen any of my trip reports, you'll see some weird routes, day trips or otherwise. There are a few others that I've not reported on. Some of the highlights I've done:

OKC-DEN-LAX-JFK to catch a 762, and another redeye ending at EWR because I wanted to be there early but not spend the night

Drove to Tulsa and did TUL-DFW-OKC-DAL-TUL to (mainly) get the only 757 service in the state and (secondarily) say I made a connection in OKC

BOS-JFK-IAD-DEN-OKC to get home one day, just because
Good night, and keep watching the skis. Uh, skies.

BCN-DOH-GRU-EZE and return - because of an ultra cheap fare on QR.
SVO-LED-VKO, because it was more interesting than taking a cab between the airports.
BRS-BGY, MXP-FCO-CDG-SIN-CDG-TRN-BRI-BGY, MXP-FCO-NRT-FCO-BRI-STN, 30,000 miles in one shot, because Alitalia screwed up their fares and I got the lot (including positioning flights on FR) for under €250.
SFO-PDX-ATL-PHL-FRA-VCE-AMS-BRS, a couple of cheap US domestics and an Alitalia error fare which then encountered a rebooking.
MAH-MAD-GVA-FCO-JFK, because it was another error fare on Alitalia.

Plus dozens of other special/enthusiast flights where I've travelled thousands of miles for the experience.

DCA - STL
STL - OKC
OKC - IND
IND - ORD

DEN-LAX-SAN-LAX-IAH-ORD-COS-DEN

Flew 75, 76, 78 on the same trip. Oh, and to ride another E120 and the Q400.

Living the non-rev life.

DEN-TPA-IAD-SFO-DEN

Slept in the SFO airport due to a late flight and missed our DEN segment until the next morning.

Back to back without leaving the airports, I've done DCA-BNA-LAX-MIA-ORD-MHK. Departed DCA around 430pm and arrived MHK the following morning around 12pm.

AMS-CDG/ORY-LHR-SIN-LHR-MAD-LHR-JNB-LHR-AMS, all in 5 days. It was an Iberia mistake fare which was so cheap I couldn't resist!

When I was living in Beijing, a couple of times I flew home on SQ from HKG. To get to HKG, i'd fly MU or FM PEK-SHA-SZX, then get the train to Hong Kong.

Routing PEK-SHA-SZX-HKG-SIN-LHR = 9793 miles
Direct PEK-LHR = 5080 miles

So a 4713 mile detour a couple of times a year
http://my.flightmemory.com/shefgab Upcoming flights: AMS-RIX-BUD-VDA,ETH-TLV-FCO-LHR,STN-TXL-LCY,LTN-CPH-LTN,LGW-SZG,MUC-LHR

Had to get from HKG to BOS in Novemver 2009. Rather than going HKG-NRT-DTW-BOS on a DL(NW) non-rev staff ticket this is what I decided to do (also on staff/ZED tickets):

HKG-BKK UL A330-200 overnight BKK
BKK-MCT WY A330-300
MCT-DXB WY 737-700
DXB-BAH GF A340-300 overnight BAH
BAH-LHR GF A330-200
LHR-BOS BA 777-200

One of the best experiences I've ever had, especially since now we don't have staff travel privileges on UL. Even wrote a trip report on BKK-MCT-DXB.

Quoting aloges (Reply 32):

Was that one chartered by Volkswagen?

t was a scheduled Air Berlin flight. They fly/flew twice a week Monday and Friday. The tickets going to AJR monday and to HAJ Friday are ridicously expensive, OTOH going to AJR Friday and HAJ Monday extremely cheap. I paid something like €60 a week before departure. AJust after the AB flight arrived in AJR a A321 from OS landed as well, I believe it came from Munich.
Lots of swedes on the flight though. And plenty of germans in the AJR terminal

Drove from TVC to GRR. Then flew GRR-CLE-DFW-IAH. Aircraft: DH2, ERJ-145XR, ERJ-145ER.

I flew ARN-ZRH-CPH and then took the train to go to the city of Hässleholm in southern Sweden.
This routing, including the train from CPH to Hässleholm was actually twice as cheap than taking the nonstop ARN-KID or ARN-MMX. For the return i took CPH-ARN on TP flight. This was back in 2003 when they still flew LIS-CPH-ARN.

I also did ARN-MMX//CPH-BRU-ARN in one day just for the sake of flying.

The biggest detour i did was ARN-LIS-EWR-LIS-ARN instead of non stop ARN-EWR-ARN
I prefer to be crazy and happy rather than normal and bitter

For me This one takes the cake

- BNE-LSY-SYD-ADL including a overnight in SYD. then on the way back ADL-MEL-BNE (with the ADL-MEL sector by coach!). I think I was also the first connecting passenger Lismore had handled as the local baggage handlers offloaded by bag and the check in staff looked mighty confused that I was checking in an already checked in bag.

Others include (all city pairs mentioned have adequate nonstop service)

- BNE-MKY-ROK
- BNE-GLT-ROK-MKY
- BNE-MKY-TSV
- CNS-TSV-ROK-BNE
- BNE-CBR-MEL
- BNE-AKL-CHC
- AKL-SYD-BNE
- CHC-BHE-WLG
- BNE-SYD-PER

Trying to become the first controller to FAM to all 50 states I have two that really stand out:

The first, DEN-MIA-EYW and return EYW-RSW-CLT-DEN (this was rather interesting and got me aboard two new types for me)

The second (more amusing), DEN-MSP-SEA and return SEA-PDX-SLC-DEN
