World's Best 2014 Airline Liveries Announced

And the world's best airline livery is.........Hawaiian Airlines!

HA moved up one spot to claim this years world's best airline livery. Ohana By Hawaiian took 3rd place. 4 airlines from the Pacific region were in the top 10 including last year's winner Fiji Airlines. Air Tahiti Nui also placed in this year's top 10.

None of those are particularly spectacular, but I'd put Air Seychelles at the top, followed by Ohana.

Swiss' used to be good. Sure, it was Eurowhite, but it was a really classy livery that looked great. Now they've messed with the little touches that made it so special: the four languages and the boxes on the engines. Very disappointing. I'd rate Air Canada's livery ahead of it now.

But as for AA's being better? Not a chance.

Air Inuit is much more interesting!

I love Swiss' livery, from a design perspective, it's nice.

Air Tahiti Nui's always had one glaring problem, IMHO. The flower. There's something about it that doesn't fit in with the lines of the rest of the livery.

The only one here that I truly have a problem with is Starflyer. They've been around since 2007 and have never changed that awful livery. Neat, sure. But there's not much about it that really gets me.

Now, get me started on fonts, and I'd probably argue Qantas or JAL. Maybe British or American?

Disappointing number of new liveries though.

Where is Garuda?!

Nothing beats Ryan International Airlines's livery, especially on their A330s. If they were still around, I know they'd make the list. Very simple, beautiful, and clean livery.

Couldn't agree more... A classic livery. Love the colours, love the font, love the proportions, love the flexibility of the design so that it fits perfectly the contours of every type of Thai plane (and wow there are a lot of them, lol!)

The 'adaptability' of a design is underestimated I think. Some liveries look awesome on some planes, and not so on other types. Qantas stated that the main reason it refreshed it's livery pre-A380 was to make it better fit the A380 (and not to chop off the kangaroo's legs) and came up with a design that so perfectly adapts to fit the 747, 737, A330 and all the QantasLink types as well. Very clever designing.

I guess airlines aim to make their livery fit all kinds of plane, but some execute it so well while others not so.

I think this thread is a bit misleading.
It's neither "World's Best 2014 Airline Liveries Announced" nor "And the world's best airline livery is...".

It's just that some guy somewhere with a blog has decided what his opinion on airline liveries is.

It's amazing how many people here on A.net take everything on the internet as "official" on some way.

What a pleasant surprise for such a small regional airline here in Canada. While mostly serving Inuit communities in Northern Quebec, it flies south to both Montreal, and Quebec City.

Swiss took a step backwards when they refreshed their brand a few years ago, dropping the the cube logo and adding billboard titles turned a simple but smart livery into just another white plane with big letters splashed across the front, it's not exactly bad but it's not worthy enough to be considered among the best.

Starflyer have a horrible livery in my opinion, black can look really good but in this case it just doesn't work thanks to the very unnatural line and odd shape it gives to the aircraft. The logo on the tail is quite weak as well, from not too far away that would just look like a scribble.

Love the Air Inuit livery! The design on the tail is very clever, reminds be of the old Canadian livery which I loved as well.

Best one out of that list for me is still Air Tahiti Nui, it's been around a few years now but still looks great.

For the record, I rarely take anything I read here as official. As with most things online, I take everything posted with a grain of salt, but I did find this article entertaining none the less. I suppose these rankings are no less official than Skytrax naming Cathay Pacific as "Airline of the Year". Everyone has opinions and everyone seems to give out awards for something. In this case, a commercial pilot for an unnamed European airline started a consulting company, and decided to create an award for best airline livery. He put together a 9 judge panel of industry enthusiasts and together they came up with their rankings. I found the rankings even more interesting after reading the bios on the judges and noted that it doesn't look like any of them are American and yet they voted an American carrier as having the world's best livery. Good for them, and good for Hawaiian!

Among those in the list I like Thai, Starflyer and O'hana best.

Thai's purple is very soothing. Starflyer for that preppy look and O'hana for that native Hawaiian print.

I always thought an SQ plane with a very light version of their Batik design could make for a beautiful livery but it looks like they're never going to do a new livery after SQ6!

The example they used for TN isn't even the current version - that was on their original 342 not their 343 fleet. It reminded me how the red and white stripes on TN ruins the original livery.

SWISS...???really?ugh...how plain and utterly boring.I think KAL n KLM's blue is so much nicer.I do agree Thai's is very nice but I still prefer their old livery with their purple running along the fuselage endind with the Thai logo near the front door.

I like the Air Koryo one the most, a classic and never out of date beauty.
Also Aeroflot is nice.
I loooooved the Delta one, the one that the TriStars wore during the last years of service. Wonderful memories!
And the Uzbekistan one, wow... it is so nice on their IL-114s and once was great on the Tushkas and ILWs.
It seems I am into classics.... I looove the Biman classic DC-10 livery!

Hawaiian is very nice. No problem with it winning. So many are really great.

Alaska is fine, United would be good with a better font.
LanChile or is it just LAN is very attractive.
Since I fly US a lot - their's is simple but very good.
Delta should have a more specific tail.
JetBlue is excellent.
Southwest - OK I suppose.
Virgin America - good but simple
British - I like quite well.
EVA is good.
So hard to say one is really "the best".
Glad Hawaiian won.

American's tail is awful. Too much, garrish is the word that comes to mind.

Cathay - the worst. Who ever thought that was a good idea? Maybe they fly a lot
at night so no cared?
The green from 10 or 15 years ago was very classy.

LOL what a ridiculous list! I mean, SWISS?! Seriously?! It's just whitewash with the word "Swiss" on it; it's horrendously boring and unimaginative. And to round out the list they pick one with a blank white tail with "SF" in script (I thought of better when I was 4 years old) and another with a duck bill painted on the nose. Asinine.

Swiss on that list makes me think a lot. I do not think there is anything special about that livery. I think Air India has a pretty good livery to compete in that top spot. SQ can also make it to that top 10 I feel.

It was called the "cube", not boxes, but THANK YOU for that! I thought I was the only one who was massively disappointed by those changes.

Hi mate,
You are wrong with that.
It is considered as the 'main fleet livery', just the black variant. Initially it was all about rugby and thus the earlier all black colours, but with the new livery, it has become standard and is not considered a 'special' livery.
On the topic of your Top Ten, yes I can see why most feature but the glaring 'mistake' is Asiana, with Swissair highly debatable at best.
I really appreciate the effort gone into the selection and explanation of the list.
Keep it up!
And oh! I was serious about a 'Ten Worst' list. I would be interested in your feedback on the liveries you consider to be the worst.
