It was a bird so it wasn't Airbus fault, not like the engine failed halfway through the Atlantic....

Yes . Jetblue's first A321 has suffered an engine fire (failure) on take off roll in SJU . The aircraft had to be evacuated .

It seems pretty rare for an evacuation NOT to involve injuries. I wonder if there's some way to redesign the slides to make them safer while still allowing for a quick evacuation.

They use the All core A321's for high density routes, ie JFK-SJU/FLL/SDQ/AUA/BGI/NAS/LAS to name a few off the top of my head. Right now they have @7 Mint A321 for LAX, going to go upto 11 when SFO Mint service starts in a couple months, and about another 7 or so all core A321's doing high density routes from NYC. In short the Mint A321 is a seperate dedicated fleet of @11 or 12 they will use specifically for JFK-LAX/SFO..(For now..rumor is they will start Mint for Transcon LAX/SFO from Boston soon as well.)
