Air New Zealand At ORD On 10/26

Mon Oct 27, 2014 4:14 am

Can someone shed any light on why Air New Zealand operated into ORD today?
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/ANZ6005 Here it is heading back to LAX now, where it looks like it came from under the number ANZ 1946 earlier today, and from AKL before that under the same flight number.

It was a charter to bring in the NZ rugby team (the All Blacks) and fans. The team will be playing Chicago's rugby team this week at Soldier Field.

Basically just an PR stunt by NZ, due to the upcomming rugby game!

Whilst there is an element of PR involved, it is a sold out charter flight and the seats weren't exactly cheap (although that is of course the charterers problem to cover what they have paid for the aircraft upfront). I don't consider flights earning healthy revenue to be stunts.

Hardly a stunt. Air New Zealand is one of the All Blacks' major sponsors as well as their official Airline, hence the charter.

Sounds a lot better than that

Still sounds pretty uneven however. I have a feeling, for the All Blacks, the toughest part of their American adventure will be the flight over...

Hopefully a frequent sight at ORD as this is one airline we'd love to have.

ORD was a route NZ had originally thought could be operated by 787. Times have changed though.
