Quoting wilco737 (Reply 49):
But it is on the to do list of many I am sure. Problem is, only LH flies them as passenger version at the moment. Soon Air China and Korean Air.
And we get a couple more next year, so some more routes for the 748 and bigger chance to fly it.

Tonight it will be 747-400 flight #257 for me

Thanks   oh yes.. even I was never on (in) a 380 there don't have any wish.

Where you flying to?

Sadly, I've only flown on the 747 four times...two Pan Am (a 100 and a 200 series), British Airways (a 200 series) and Air Canada (a 400 series).

By frequency:
  • UY742 - belonged to defunct Cameroon Airlines. The aircraft overran the runway at CDG approximately a month after my last flight in 2000 and was declared a hull loss. it was the only 747 in the fleet
  • AF747
  • BA744
  • KL744

What a pity ...

Only three flights on a "Jumbo"

1) O8 Oasis Hongkong HKG - LGW B747-400 B-LFA 05/2007
2) CX Cathay Pacific SFO - HKG B747-400 B-HOP 11/2011
3) CX Cathay Pacific HKG - CEB B747-400 B-HUG 11/2011
Flying is not inherently dangerous but it is very unforgiving in case of carelessness, incapacity or neglect.

Very short flight (2h30)

My wife and I had cockpit jumpseats on an SAA SP one day, JNB-DUR, this is a 45 minute flight at a pinch. JNB is at 5,500ft, DUR is at sea level, we climbed to FL410. When I asked the captain why so high for such a short flight he said "because we can".

I think we were level for 5 minutes tops, and the cabin crew did a full hot breakfast service. Those were the days...

Remember just before Christmas 1993 I had a very good friend working for SQ in ZRH. She presented me a flight in the Cockpit to LHR on a B744. Stayed all the time on the flight deck and had food from Raffles Class. Even so long time ago still remember that time as was yesterday.
As you say andz, good old times......

Great Thread !

N.B. - The photos below are just representative ones, not the actual aircraft I flew on...although maybe, just maybe, they were!

1974 -- UA LAX-HNL-LAX. Stars-n-Bars. The inflight movies were projected on large (four by five foot?) bulkhead screens from overhead film projectors that used cassettes about a foot in diameter. They included Huckleberry Finn and Woody Allen's Sleeper. Upstairs was a lounge with Pong tables, and warm Macadamia nuts were served to all pax. As a child, I was given a UA coloring book and crayons, a wing-pin to wear, and a visit to the cockpit. A seminal experience for me.

1987 -- CO EWR-SFO. A 747-1 or -2. It was a thrill to be in Int'l First on this flight (they called it P class at the time) in Zone A, the nose section. CO offered three classes until 1991's introduction of BusinessFirst. Catering was int'l style, but lacked Prime Rib seat-side carving and Caviar on this domestic turn. It was an aircraft acquired in the PEX deal.

1988 -- PA JFK-FRA. When I was in the USAF. A great flight, meals, drinks, everything was perfect in Coach. Can't recall the IFE, as I was glued to the window view of the nighttime Atlantic and the starry sky! By this time, of course, Upstairs on 747s was no longer a public lounge...PA probably had J or F up there.

1999-2002 -- Various VS LAX and SFO return flights to LHR on their 744s in Upper Class, both upstairs and down. Loved the PJs (called "sleep-suits"), the amenity kits, the seat design, the little bar in Zone A, the masseuse, and the top-notch airport lounges. Food served inflight was good but not special.

2010 onward -- Now I'm flying on UA's 744-422s... The hard-product up front and upstairs is great, and Coach's comfortable seats will be improved by WiFi and in-seat power (not that I care much about IFE)...at least slimlines aren't planned...but the meals and soft product could be better. I love them anyhow!! Fly F in the nose or J in the roof if you can.

How Many 747 Operators Have You Flown?

Boy oh Boy, here I go:

LH741,742
AI 742
SQ 742,3,4
KL 743,4
QF 742,3,4 AND 747SP (yes, they actually used those on PER-SIN in the late ´90´s and I was wrapped to ride them!!)
MH 742,3
AF744,

But the best of all must always be a jumpseat on a 744ERF freighter from EU to SIN! You should have seen the customs guys face when we landed at SIN and presented a GenDec (General declaration) with a total load of 4 (3 Crews & one Jumpseater... me) for an entire 744! he (and me) thought that was pretty cool!

Some impressive lists above.
Feeling a bit inadequate with this small list, but here goes:
All 744's incl ER's for the QF flights:
SQ - SIN-LHR, LAX-NRT
UA - SYD-LAX and return, SYD-SFO
QF - MEL-HKG-LHR, LHR-SIN, BKK-SYD
CX - SIN-HKG (very recently, and one of the last 744 flights before they swapped it for the 77W).
Was very close to adding Ansett Australia to the list. Was booked on KIX-BNE in Sept 2001, but the closure of the airline beat me by only a few days. Luckily, SQ came to the rescue and got me back to Oz via SIN at no extra cost.

BA 747-400, almost every summer since 2009; from LHR to SEA, DFW, SFO, BOS and PHX

BA 747-? in 1997 to BNE (no idea which type, this was before I became interested in planes)

LH 747-8i (actually the very first one, D-ABYA), last winter FRA-ORD

KL 747-400 (still hoping for a Combi), this coming Sunday AMS-YYZ (so technically this one doesn't yet count)
