US Airlines Busiest Routes

Sun Dec 28, 2014 4:33 am

Does anyone know what route each airline below has the most frequencies on?

What's:
American's (I'd imagine from DFW)
Delta's (I'd imagine from DTW)
United's (???)
Southwest's (I'd imagine BWI)
JetBlue's (FLL-?)
Alaska's (My guess is SEA-PDX or LAX)
Virgin's (LAX-SFO?)

Thanks!

AA:
DFW-LAX most seats
DFW-ORD most frequency

DL:
ATL-MCO (both seats and frequency I think)

UA:
LAX-SFO (seats and frequency?)

WN:
DAL-HOU

B6:
JFK-BOS? Not really sure about this...

AS:
SEA-LAX I believe

Not sure on Virgin, but I would assume SFO-LAX

No.... by far to/from ATL.

Your right, SEA-ANC has LA beat in frequency/capacity. But doesn't SEA-PDX beat them both in frequency (even though it is horizon air?)

Flight is operated under the QX certificate, so it would be QX's busiest route. Remember AS is proudly all Boeing

How does DFW-ORD frequency compare to PHL-DCA?

AS is a bit unique since it is the only airline with its most frequent route being operated by a regional carriers.

SEA-PDX and DAL-HOU go back and forth between which route is the most frequently operated route in the US by a single airline. Both operate their respective routes every thirty minutes, but the number of late evening departures varies.

For G4 I believe it's BLI-LAS, and for F9 I believe it's DEN-LAS or DFW or SLC.

Would B6 be FLL-JFK and if not just one route but city pair FLL-NYC I the k would take it for sure.

I think numbers should include "All Airports" statistics.
Many people flights from MIA to JFK, EWR and LGA. So, lets consider the MIA-NYC route. But not sure if, when we say MIA, other airports should be included as FLL.
Difficult but interesting task for some statistic crazy!

Hardly, although I sense some snarkiness there. DCA-PHL is around 10-11 daily, and it's a mix of mainline and regional. LGA-PHL is higher at about 15 and all regional, although that includes E170 and E190 which are basically every bit as comfortable as mainline. I have to think PHL-LGA is the busiest route for US at least in terms of frequency.

I was being serious. I recall them hoarding slots and they ran RJ's almost 27 times daily between the city pair. maybe that was just a 1 time thing ?

I agree we should lump close airports together, so for UA, the highest for both seats and frequencies might belong to ORD-NYC

I pulled from OAG and posted here:
https://www.scribd.com/doc/251175872/Jan-2015-US-Top-Scheduled-Routes-and-Cities

The counts are for the week ending January 11, 2015, directional flights, with frequencies and seats expressed per day as the average of the week, reflecting the differences in daily operations. American/US Airways and Southwest/AirTran are grouped. Numbers include both mainline and regional operations.

Quick summary:

AA top routes are DFW-LAX (16.9x daily), BOS-PHL (16.0) and DFW-ORD (14.9)
AS top routes are PDX-SEA (22.9), GEG-SEA (15.3) and ANC-SEA (14.0)
B6 top routes are FLL-JFK (9.6), BOS-DCA (9.3) and JFK-MCO (8.1)
DL top routes are ATL-MCO (15.4), ATL-LGA (14.6) and LAX-SFO (13.3)
UA top routes are LGA-ORD (12.9), DCA-ORD (12.6) and DEN-IAH (12.3)
WN top routes are DAL-HOU (19.7), LAX-OAK (12.7) and LAS-LAX (11.4)

For kicks I also pulled the top city pairs (grouping regional airports) with daily frequencies by American, Alaska, jetBlue, Delta, Frontier, Spirit, United, Virgin and Southwest. The top 30 are in the Scribd doc. Fascinating to see how Spirit is skimming off some very big and competitive routes.

Yes - top 3 for Hawaiian are HNL-OGG (26.4x daily), HNL-KOA (18.7x) and HNL-LIH (16.9x), apples to apples with the above. Another notable I didn't include in the 48-state analysis is Cape Air (9K) with EIS-SJU (14.4x) and SJU-VQS (11.3x).

In that case for Southwest, SJC/OAK/SFO-LAX/BUR/ONT/SNA are likely busier than DAL-HOU. LAS-LAX/BUR/SNA/ONT I believe is busier as well than DAL-HOU.

I believe SFO-LAX and LAX-JFK are tied for them. SFO-LAX has several A319's while LAX-JFK is all A320 last time I checked.

PHL-BOS averages 15-16 flts/day and peaks up at 17-18 in the summer. Primarily on E190's with some mainline aircraft mixed in.
