Top 10 First Classes For 2015 Have Been Revealed

Wed Dec 31, 2014 8:47 am

I just saw in the latest Airways magazine an article on the Top 10 International First Classes 2015, it's interesting to see so many new First Class products being released in the last year, and I know of a few more. Whilst people say the cabin is obviously dying, it's good to see there being so much investment into it! My question is what other new first classes have been launched or are going to be launched?

http://thedesignair.net/2014/12/30/t...-international-first-classes-2015/

1. Etihad 98/100
2. Singapore Airlines 94/100
3. Cathay Pacific 89/100
4. British Airways 85/100
5. Air France 84/100
6. Emirates 81/100
7. Qatar Airways 80/100
8. Qantas 76/100
9. Japan Airlines 72/100
10. Swiss 71/100

and a quote from their press release...

“First Class cabins are the best example of both innovation and design in the aviation industry, as they are the most valued and profitable cabin product onboard. Recently with the influx of new aircraft and refreshed cabins, airlines such as Etihad have raised the bar for passenger comfort and have invested heavily into the design of their product too,” notes Jonny Clark, founder and lead judge of TheDesignAir. “We are proud of all the carriers that have made our Top 10 list, they deserve to be recognized for their investment into creating some of the best experiences available in the sky.”

Happy New Year everyone!

I've flown Qatar Business class (long Haul) and First Class (short haul). Nothing spectacular at all with lacklustre service from staff and mediocre food. BA first is a more rounded experience in a typically British service standard. I've also flown Air France first and the food, drink and service was fantastic - seat comfortable, BA was better, but Qatar worse.

LH not even on the list??

Focus was on design, that leaves a lot to personal taste and thus hard to measure. I prefere a clean design over middle east oppulence, but does it make them a worse or better product? The staff testet all and this is the result out of the top 100. They really testet all? I honestly doubt that there are 100 airlines offering FC, let alone are worth testing. Well, year is ending, and you have to write something.

Happy new year!

I agree that the resurgence in F is a good thing. It's a small sign of economic and consumer spending etc. I cannot afford it (right now) but if I could, I would. Except, if I am going to spend $12 to $18k for First, I wouldn't spend it on AA or UA, I'd spend it on one of the 10 above and for LH.

How wonderful if AA and UA created an experience that would command $18k on long hauls. Even if it was 4 or 6 seats.

Related question: why did TAM yank out First Class? The pics were beautiful (design: PriestmanGoode) , was the experience not as good as it looked, or was there no demand for TAM First when you could fly most of the top 10 in and out of Brazil?

Thanks!

Ridiculous list. Any ranking without thoroughly explained and transparent criteria is bullshit and should be treated as such.

LAN group planes do not offer First Class and they are doing the same at TAM, it was only 4 seats one row.

LH doesn't really exist on designair.net. Probably personal preference.

To be fair, they do not make any claims that the ranking is transparent. They just publish "TheDesignAir’s Top 10 International First Classes 2015" on their own website. I'd just take it as personal opinion and as such it isn't necessarily bullshit.

The thread title is a bit misleading.

BA?!?! That's a glorified business class at best... not to mention the number of seats they cram into the nose of the Jumbo.

I don't. All of these airlines operate in markets where people still pay for F but those markets are too few and far in between. F will never go away completely but I would not call an upgrade of the product on a few planes, a resurgence. Even EK has stated that they might removed F class from some A380's due to too many empty seats. This piece was published just about a year ago.

"Thierry Antinori, a board member at Emirates - which has showers at 39,000 feet - told a German paper in December that the airline was unhappy with load factors in First Class and was considering whether to stop offering First Class on some long-haul routes."

9. Japan Airlines 72/100
10. Swiss 71/100

In terms of INTL F, I've only tried EY CX QF JL on this list. Additionally I've tried LH NH OZ and TG. I'm booked on SQ in 2015.

I definitely agree EY should be #1, especially now that their First Apartments are live. I've tried JL and NH and I can honestly say that NH is ahead of JL in nearly every aspect, except maybe IFE selection.

I find it quite ridiculous that BA and AF are in the top 5 yet LH is nowhere in the Top 10, consider the BA seat itself is barely larger than many J seats. LH's First Class Terminal at FRA is MiddleEast level of opulence.

QR's F is offered on very very few routes and it's quite bland. There's something wrong when GA MU CZ's F offer more privacy than a ME3 airline.

It's quite regrettable that LAN decided to throw away JJ F completely (considering GRU has the highest paid F demand in all of LatAm). That "living room" design of light grey accented with yellow and bright green is so pleasing on the eyes.

okay, done ranting

I believe they did away F is due to other OneWorld members' F product on GRU routes. Where did LATAM's F product fly to? Are they overlapping other OneWorld members' F product and deemed less superior?

Obviously they overlap a lot with AA (to MIA and JFK) and BA (to LHR). But in terms of hard product alone, I like the JJ one the most. Intra-alliance overlap is fine because it actually strengthens the alliance's overall offering. UA/CA both offer F on SFO-PEK, and UA/SQ both offer F on SFO-ICN/HKG.

F may not necessarily have to be profitable on its own, but it does create a certain halo effect to make the airline (and the alliance) feel more premium. On top of that, it can attract loyalty. If F is perfectly sized just for paid F demand and cutting out all upgraders and award redemptions, they would end up looking like QR's F network.

That is what OneWorld is about(except S7...)! However, would alliance member forgo their Premium product to be profitable, or would they keep them just for Premium status?

I'm not trying to imply that, but it's also odd that they can't sustain 4 F seats to select markets with quite high paid F demand (MIA, JFK, LHR).

I don't think the space taken up by those 4F seats are what's killing the CASM on the JJ 77Ws. Their weak financials are much deeper than that.

I've always maintained the viewpoint that LAN running JJ out of SCL is weakening the premium brand, and giving an opening to the likes of Azul to start competing with them on long-haul (GOL and AviancaBrasil might not be far behind).

Thanks for your insight. However it would be a little more credible if either or both AF and / or BA appeared in your list of those airlines whose F Class product you have actually used. To so severely condemn the design of something you have never experienced seems somewhat harsh.

Quoting galleypower (Reply 4):

I think you may have misunderstood the The Design Air article. Their only mention of '100' is not of the number of airlines that they have assessed but the total number of possible points available of which EY received the near perfect score of 98/100.

I haven't tried it but my BFF has tried BA F more than a couple times... and ends up with similar assessment. The soft product may be F level but the seats looks rather "J+". CX puts 9F in the 744 nose while BA managed to squeeze like 14 seats in the same space.

I'm not blindly condemning them, but to have BA in top 5 (which few people who rank as such) while LH not in top 10 feels rather odd. It takes more than blue LED mood lighting to make a good F.

I must admit that despite some chauvinism from me, the lack of LH in this list is somewhat chocking. I never flown any of their aircraft nor experienced their F product, but while browsing through A.net checking some pics of LH First class cabins, I came across photos of F classes in their 748i, and it looked quiet impressive.....

Quoting readytotaxi (Reply 16):

The 777 fleet is being refurbished right now. The process should go on through 2015 and AF has decided to revamp A330 and A380 cabins also. The 340 and 747 won't be as they'll be retired soon.
77E F-GSPT was the first aircraft refurbished and CDG-JFK was the first destination concerned.
I believe HND, SIN-CGK, IAH, PVG are the first destination flown with new cabins.

Here's a link related (sorry in French though....):

Agreed. Although BA has a beautiful design, I cant help but feel like it resembles a more upscale version of the CX or AA J cabin on the 77W. . . I think the legroom might even be the same.
I'm not complaining, I'm critiquing...

BA's first class is a joke... a glorified business class seat, service mediocre at best and food (as is the case in any BA class) barely edible.
AF's new first class definitely belongs on the list... Their Premiere lounge at CDG is in a class of its own... BA's Concorde room is a joke compared to the lounge experience offered to first class pax by LH at FRA or AF at CDG.
Even AF's old first class blew BA out of the water: service, food, personalization of the experience.
Let's get real guys!!
