Iberia Widebodies - Heathrow To Madrid

Thu Jan 08, 2015 8:10 pm

Hello all,

I have some holidays to take before the end of February or I will lose them. My lovely employer doesn't let us carry holidays over. I was looking at some short breaks that I could take in Europe, for a reasonable price, that involved an interesting aircraft, and remembered about the Iberia A330/A340s to Madrid.

I realise that the widebodies dont operate on these flights every day of the week so was wondering if someone could tell me what days they do run? Also is there any set programme for what aircraft runs on what day? For example is it an A343 on Tuesday, A333 on Wednesday, and A346 on Thursday, or is it purely a random selection? I would like to get two of the three on the trip.

Finally if anyone else has a suggestion for a short trip with an interesting aircraft, please feel free to suggest it.

Kind Regards,

Mark

Hi and a good idea to try out this route.

The 3166 usually gets regular WB and here is an example of the patterns of the last few days :

http://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/ib3166/

When you search on IB.COM or indeed BA.COM and click on the flight number it should show the aircraft type but beware there can be aircraft changes to non WB from time to time at last minute but thats a risk we all take.

A random date Wednesday 4th Feb is an A340 and the 3rd is A330

I guess the LGW-AMS with Garuda and a guaranteed 777 for just over £100 return at the end of January, even if it is for just over an hour, would count as a short trip with an interesting aircraft

Thank you. At least I now know what one to look for.

You are right its a chance we all take. Thats why I would like to try book the widebody out and back to maximise the chance of getting on one. The old A340 would be nice to get on though. The A333s will be around for a while yet I suppose.

Thats a good idea. I had forgot that flight existed. A good price as well. Definitely better than a B738 or A320.

I suppose the decision is what will be around longer. The Iberia A343 or the Garuda AMS-LGW tag on.

Thank you both for your responses.

There's also SQ on MUC-MAN and vice versa. Nice short hope on a 77W!

You might be right on that one. I think I will put that one on the list for this year. Maybe when the weather improves a bot though. February in AMS may be slightly more chilly that MAD. Not by much though!

I have sent you a response to your PM.

Since MAD and Germany have already been mentioned, I'd like to add LAN's 787 service from MAD to FRA. It's tagged on to their SCL-MAD flight (i.e. otherwise the aircraft would sit around at MAD all day) which means that occasionally one of these two happens if the flight is very late into MAD: the 787 is replaced with something wet-leased at short notice (such as a EuroAtlantic 767) or MAD-FRA-MAD is cancelled.

So perhaps you could do LHR-MAD on IB, MAD-FRA on LA, get to MUC and then fly MUC-MAN on SQ.
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

Thats another good idea. A bit of a round Europe trip. Plenty of interesting aircraft and airlines involved. I assume its just LH between FRA and MUC? Or can I catch a train? Wouldn't be so good if the MAD-FRA leg got cancelled though.

Thanks again for all your responses.

It's LH, a train (special prices starting from 29€ although these are rare nowadays) or a bus (very very cheap, but slow)

Have a look at bahn.de (for trains between Frankfurt and Munich) and http://en.busliniensuche.de/ (for busses)

Thank you very much. The train sounds very reasonable starting at 29 euros. I suppose the train will be a bit more scenic than flying between FRA and MUC. I will have a look and try to start formulating a plan.

How often does this happen? Do you know?

I've done the MAD-LHR on a IB A346 last year, and planning a MUC-MAN flight on the SQ777, but I'm also interested in doing the LA787 too, but I'm slightly wary of "what if" ...it's cancelled or so late for some reason.

Would be interested to know if anyone has any knowledge on how reliable LAN is on this flight, thanks

Sadly, no. But a cursory glance at FR24's history: http://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/la704/ and another one at flightaware makes it look like it isn't happening these days. In other words, I'd take the chance if I wanted to bag a flight on LA and/or the 788.

I suppose they're pretty decent in that regard now that the 788 has been in service for a while.

Thanks for that! For some reason, I thought they covered only US flights.

It's interesting how their statistics for 704 and 705 differ so much - even in terms of sample size.

Kuwait Airways operates twice a week GVA-FRA-GVA (Thursday and Saturday from GVA, Wednesday and Friday from FRA). They usually have the lowest fare, currently equivalent to about $100 one way including taxes from GVA (a little higher from FRA based on a few random dates I checked in next couple of weeks). KU schedule shows one flight on an A340-300 and one on an A300-600. The latter must be virtually the only remaining way to fly on an A300 within Europe.

Thanks Debonair (wasn't aware of this website) and Aloges

I believe there's also a KE 777 flight, within Europe too, or was until recently. I think it was from Vienna to ZRH.

This may be of passing interest to you, I have just printed my e ticket for BA 7058 MAD-LHR on 24 Feb - departs at 1545. It is apparently operated by IB and scheduled to be operated by an A300-300.

Were the upgrades on offer at online check-in or at the airport? How were the loads on your flight? I'm taking that flight in March. I'm booked in J but a friend of mine in Y, for that price maybe he is interested in joining me.
So, we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past

Have managed to book my trip for early March so am looking forward to the short-haul, wide-body experience on the A340s.

Thanks again,

Yes the outbound flight to MAD had been on a A321 - though I cant really complain as my flight to/from MAD were in conjunction with LAN B787s to SCL - my first experience of both LAN and the 787.

I will do. Hopefully the weather at the LHR end is fair so I can get some acceptable photos of the A346 taxiing in. Will probably have the opposite problem at the MAD end. I expect heat haze could be the problem there!

Well its the A340-300 that I am going for so hopefully I don't end up with the A330-300. Although I wouldn't complain if I did.
