Emptiest Flight You've Been On

Sat Mar 21, 2015 7:39 pm

I once flew from SIN to DEL on SQ's A380 and there were only about 90 confirmed passengers. For a plane made for 400+ passengers, it was quite eerie but needless to say, a comfortable flight. I was on the upper deck and about half the seats were taken, while the rear and middle sections of the lower deck were completely empty.

Most of the domestic flights I've been on in the Philippines on a 180-seater A320 has always been less than 50% load factor. But then again, I'm only there during off-peak seasons.

I also had the pleasure on flying AA from DFW-GRU on the 77W with a 50% load in Economy. It was quite a comfortable flight and what felt like the fastest 9-hour flight I've been on.

B-1900 IAD-SYR with 2 pax

B-1900 LNS-PIT with just me

A-345 SIN-EWR about 1/3 full - back 3rd of the plane had 3 pax (me as one)

DH8-100 ROC-SYR with 4 pax

DH8-300 BGM-SYR with 6 pax

777-300 MUC-MAN less than half full
I want to live in an old and converted 727...

I remember flying a Midwest Express MD-80 MKE-IAD a few weeks after 9/11- I think there were about 40 passengers, on a plane configured for 112. That was definitely an eerie time to be traveling!

While I can't tell I have been alone on a plane, and while I can't tell exact numbers, when airberlin was flying FRA-ZRH 4 times a day on a mileage run almost every flight had only a couple of passengers. Similar on a flight with airberlin from Zweibrücken to Palma de Mallorca. And also, when TUIfly used to fly in the winter to Olbia quite a few times per week, those flights were often so empty that service was done directly out of the galley and each glass and sandwich brought personally to the few passengers' seat.

Mine (load-percentage-wise) was a US Airways a330-200 CLT-PHL with about 50 passengers. The crew left the IFE one, which I thought wasn't usual. Quite the comfortable flight!

I was also on a US Airways a319 with about 25 other passengers. That was my last ride on a US Airways Star Alliance aircraft

I flew on an Eastern J41 in January as the only passenger. Strangely the aircraft had 2 cabin crew, and the captain came down to sit beside me for the pre-flight welcome on board!

Last year i flew DXB-KBP with 40 other passengers on an A340-500..not bad for a £99 ticket!

I've also been one of three or four on Let 410s and Metroliners in Europe

Good for passengers but they technically would be breaking their contract with the IFE provider as US do not have a license domestically.

My emptiest flight was FR DUB-KIR back in 2009. A 738 with around 8 or 9 passengers.

Other quiet flights include:

EK DXB-HKG A380 around 30% full.

US CLT-LGW A330 around 15-20% full.

PR MNL-DPS A320 had 35 people.
Let's fly! Unless it's on a CRJ 200, then I'll stay down here.

Mine was AC870 from YUL to CDG on december 31st, 1999. Maybe 40 persons on an A343. There was a TV guy from Radio-Canada on board (french CBC), reporting live about the Y2K bug. I believe if it weren't for him, we wouldn't have flown. We were the only flight from Canada to Europe that night. The following morning, there were not lots of people at the airport either…

QF 744 LAX-JFK 18 of us. I had a couple rows to myself. It felt awesome. They got her off the ground in no time.

WN 737 MSP-MKE 12 of us. I was so mad I bought the early bird for that one. We took off on 35 and I swear we used maybe 3000 feet of runway and they had us off. Felt like a rocket ship. I asked the captain if he was using a little extra power for that takeoff and he just grinned. All I needed to know!

These are the flights that most readily come to mind:

UA DC-10 Ord-Bos, there were probably 50 on board at most. The couple across the aisle from me took the entire center section and joined the mile high club.

US 727-200, Bos-Clt. I think the load there was about 25 passengers. The flight attendants closed off the rear of the aircraft.

CO 737-500 Ewr-Ord. I think no more than about 25 passengers. The gate agent looked at how few of us there were and didn't even bother with row announcements, he just told everyone to board at their leisure.

finally, CO 757-300 Sea-Anc,. Again, I think no more than 50 passengers.
Yes, I'd like to see airbus go under so Boeing can have their customers!

LHR-BOS on a TWA 747 in 1985.

I don't remember exact numbers but there's no way coach was more than 35% full.

Comfy flight, that!

Flew BHX - CUN about 10 years ago with Thomsonfly (I think it was called them back then?) on a B763. Turned up to check in @ BHX to find the flight actually has a stop in MAN before carrying onto CUN. The hop between BHX & MAN had to have had no more than 20 pax.

2014, Tropic Air in Belize Placencia-San Ignacio on a Caravan 208, just me and the pilot

2009, Uni Air in Taiwan Taipei-Kenting on A Dash, 3 other pax

2009, Shanghai Airlines Shanghai-Guiyang on B737-800, 4 other pax

Before all of those, it was an NH 767 NRT-PEK during SARS in 2003. Probably only ~20 people in Y.

And then early 2014 Air Panama from Corazon de Jesus-Panama City on an Islander, just 4 other pax, all of whom were women, making my first flight as the only male pax!

Dec 19th 1990 LHR-JFK on a KU 747......Think about that date for a second....I had been working 16 hour days, 6 days a week, for 8 months....Iraq has invaded Kuwait...Huh ???? No idea, from memory there were 6 of us on board, 5 of us were moved from economy to business, we could have gone into first class, but there was a paying passenger there.

We went through, let's say an interesting screening process, which stopped...Just...Of a cavity search.

We had a fighter escort leaving the UK and entering the US, which was pretty cool.

And 2 of us on a WN 738 LAX-LAS Dec last year, very strange as well as that route has always been full on the previous flights i've taken on WN.

For me it was AA 971 DFW-SJO. I had reserved the window seat, but the entire row I sat was empty. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise because the seat recline of my seat malfunctioned and I was able to stretch up to the middle seat. A fellow passenger wanted to change seats and take the aisle seat in my row, and I was OK with it. Never had so much luck with my seat reservation in my entire life.

A sole passenger on a King Air 350 about half a dozen times and a LR60 XR a couple of times.

Commercial wise I think it's been about 5 passengers on an EMB 145 up the east coast of the US on July 4th. Have been the sole passenger in the cabin (or just the ex wife and I) a good half dozen or so times. Most often on BA in business class between London and Jersey, also between BKK and SIN on CX in F.

I recall a couple of 747 flights many years ago with around 50 passengers, and quite a few smaller types, mainly 737s, with 10 or 15.

BA once operated a 747-200 NRT-LHR with just one passenger. The rest of the passenger were all rerouted on other carriers after a very long mechanical delay and only one of the original passengers was left when the delayed flight finally departed.

I was supposed to fly SFO-ORD on my very first 777 back in 1997. I got to the gate and there was a 744 sitting there. It was the one and only time in my life that I've been disappointed to see a 747 on the stand.

There were 12 passengers on the whole flight. The winds were very strange that day and we used 19R for departure. The captain warned us that because of the light aircraft (with no passengers and only fuel for the 3.5 hour flight to ORD) and the short runway/terrain and noise abatement procedures that we'd be doing a "full-power" takeoff and then making a sharp right turn.

It's unnerving when such a large structure accelerates like that. There was banging and thumping through the whole aircraft as very piece of luggage in overhead bins, every galley cart, every hanger in the coat closet made its way as far aft as its restraints would allow. I had trouble looking out the window the acceleration was so strong (and I was 20). We were off the ground in less than 30 seconds and the ground fell away as if someone had dropped it. Within seconds, the right wing had dipped almost "violently" and I seemed to be looking straight down at the ground that seemed strangely close to the winglet. We were above the mountaintops in the East Bay in seconds. We broke through a layer of clouds and kept climbing like a homesick angel. It was like being in a rocket ship.

And then with an awful falling sensation the captain cut back on the thrust and we resumed a more sensible rate of climb.

I was also one of four on a NW A319 or A320 from SFO to DTW when I was 19 or so on a red-eye. And once I was flying MSP-RST on a Saab 340 to interview for Mayo Medical School and it was me and two med students who were going to Mayo to interview for residency. We all got to know each-other and then the next night met up for beers and a movie.

I'm pretty much just repeating what I said the last time we had a thread about this, but I've never been on a flight that had an extremely low load factor. Most of my flights nowadays are nearly completely full, if not full.

I think the emptiest flight I've been on was a Qantas flight from DRW to SYD, on a 738. It was probably around half full, which was nice because it was a redeye flight and I was able to snag a group of three seats for myself, lie down, and sleep.

Air New Zealand's first flight from LAX to AKL about 17/18 years ago now.

747-400 with approximately 15 persons on board.

Fantastic service was enjoyed be all, as the passenger to crew ratio was 1 for 1

Must have been on a Skyways (JZ) Fokker 50, ARN-HAD a january morning about ten years ago. It was me and two older women on board and one flight attendant and the two pilots. I remember that the three of us didn't really pay attention to the safety briefing and the flight attendant quit the briefing halfway through.

US: PDX-PHX. A319 IIRC about 5 of us on it....no, we didn't all get a First Class upgrade.

US: LHR-PHL. A330 I don't know the numbers but it was so lightly loaded that the FA's had to ask passengers to move for weight/balance.

CO: IAH-LHR 762. Maybe 30....I know we all got a center row of 3 each with plenty left over

1982 - ORD-MCI - TW (it was either a 707 or 720) - 4 of us on board. 1 in F. 3 of us in Y.

2001 - MCI - BOS - (right after BOS reopened post 9/11) YX - DC-9 30 (or maybe an MD) can't remember. 12 passengers. Two of which were dead heading pilots.

My emptiest flight was 16 passengers (32% load factor) on a ZW (for US Airways) CR2 ITH-PHL back on Halloween night of 2011.

I was just wondering yesterday if they would let everyone sit in F if a flight was that empty. Honestly it seems kind of silly to me to just let those seats go empty. I would understand if they couldn't give everyone a first class meal and everything, but I see no good reason to not let people sit in those seats.

Quoting Texan (Reply 41):
Cape Air early morning flight from BOS-LEB. I was the only passenger.

I flew out of BOS yesterday. My gate was across from some Cape Air gates. I've never heard a flight boarded by calling individual passengers' names. I believe the one flight was headed to LEB; the other was headed to ACK, but was heavily delayed.

Had a flight with Virgin over 10yrs ago in Upper Class and I was the only person in the nose of a B747, great experience.
