Longest Flight

Tue Apr 07, 2015 3:21 pm

What would be the longest flight you have flown on? I know we have lots of these threads but those were quite a while ago.

For me so far my longest is 3,192 miles from Dublin to EWR which was 6 hours and 40 minutes. I have booked Dublin to Washington this July which is 3,392miles - that will be a LONG flight for me.

Thankfully this is a wide body aircraft so it will be interesting to see what impact that has. I don't think I could cope over 10 hours though so I don't know how people can bear going to Asia.

SFO-SYD or SYD-LAX. Whichever is longer.

ORD-HKG and LAX-HKG, both of which took around 16 hours

Try it sometime - you won't regret it. Plus you'll get a bunch of miles out of it too!

Distance SYD-LAX in 2003 747-400ER. Was in economy, enjoyed the flight though. For the time they had a great IFE.

Time: LAX-HKG just about 15 hours and 20 minutes. Was in first class for that flight. By far the best flight I have ever taken in my life. Not only did I get to go to pretty much my top city of my wish list, flying first on a CX 777-300ER was awesome.

LHR - BKK for me. About 12 hours or so.

A 10+ hour flight is fine as long as you have good entertainment and a comfortable seat with decent pitch.

For me it was SFO to HKG on SQ A380 - about 14 hours. My wife a few years ago flew SQ A340 non-stop from LAX to SIN - 18 hours and 15 minutes non-stop in the all business, 100 seat aircraft. It was the second longest commercial flight at the time.

My two longest non stop are SYD-JNB and JFK-JNB. The former was a killer, 14 hours daylight over water, grindingly boring in 2001 when IFE was scarce.

I just flew my longest on Sunday, a BA 777 from LHR-SAN. Just over 11 hours. It was fine for me though, I slept for 10 hours of it, thanks to a group of 3 seats I had to myself. Next longest is SAN-LHR at 9:45.

Longest for me is DOH-GRU on a Qatar 77L, 7,376 miles and 14h 16m. Very comfy seats even in economy and a ridiculously cheap fare on BCN-DOH-GRU-EZE and return.

To me a seat is a seat, as long as it isn't excessively narrow (10 abreast 77W etc...) I'm fine with it. I've done 7 hours in an A319LR and it was fine.

The key to maintaining your sanity on a long flight is to compartmentalize your time. Eat your inflight meal, then spend a few hours watching a movie, walk around to stretch your legs, maybe take a nap, read a book or magazine for a while, then play some games on your phone... or whatever helps keep you occupied. Just don't do one thing for the whole flight.

My top 3 longest flights

1. SYD-LAX on UA 777-200ER 7488miles
2. SFO-SYD on UA 777-200ER 7417miles
3. AUH-ORD and ORD-AUH on EY 777-300ER 7275 miles

Have 2 ULH coming up

LAX-HKG on CX 777-300ER 7260 miles
HKG-DFW on AA 777-300ER 8123 miles

Surprisingly I dont have a problem with these 15 hours flights. With some sleep and 2-3 movies the flights are over in no time.

If you can get some sleep, plus having good entertainment (either AVOD or personally owned), these long flights often go by pretty quickly.

EWR-PVG on a UA 777 is my longest. Didn't sleep a minute since I am 6'4" and in Y. Watched 6 movies though. Was very ready to get off the plane.

Did LHR-SIN-SYD on a BA 744 on the upper deck in J. Even in J it seemed like it took forever

I guess it depends on the airline, but usually it isn't that bad. 2 days ago I flew LHR - LAS on BA, a 10 hour flight, and it just "flew" by. Well, BA does have a great entertainment selection.

YVR-SYD (and then back 5 weeks later) I had done SFO to SYD and back before but from YVR just seemed a bit TOO long towards the end. The flight was only booked about two weeks before and I was in the middle section in the middle seat....

At least I had an isle on the way back.

LHR-KUL with MH. the 13 and a half hours absolutely flew by on the A380, especially considering I had all three seats on the left side of the cabin to myself!

ICN-LHR was around 13 hours too, but not quite as pleasant. Mainly because we took off in the morning and then spent the next 12 hours overflying Siberia in the middle of Winter, so it was damn bright snow outside. No chance of sleeping.

Have done LHR-BKK-LHR a few times too, normally around 10-11 hours.

JFK-JNB in Y, December 2004...

Travel Time:
14 hr 50 mn
Distance:
7,967 m

Plus we had to stop in Dakar, Senegal for fuel which more or less added three hours travel time each way. That flight probably explains why I never flew in Y once I started buying my own tickets. Shudder shudder. On the other hand, those two flights added two A340-600 regs to my log, I guess...

The whole family pretty much slept for the whole first day we were in Johannesburg.

Same route, same airline, same plane for me   And a pleasure it certainly was, although I didn't have three seats to myself.

As far as I know, this is currently the fourth longest route from LHR after EZE, SIN, and MNL.

Single sectors it would be ...

1. 7484 DXB-SYD-DXB QF A380 VH-OQE/OQJ/OQK
2. 7242 DXB-MEL-MEL QF A380 VH-OQJ/OQK
3. 6759 SIN-LHR-SIN QF A380 VH-OQE/OQG/OQJ
4. 5993 LHR-HKG QF B747 VH-OJQ/VH-OEH
5. 5355 LHR-SFO PA B747 N729PA

As one through flight it would be

QF2 and QF1 LHR-DXB-SYD/SYD-DXB-LHR at 10899 miles or 21-22 hours plus the stop. Plenty of time to have a drink, sleep, something to eat, watch a film, have something to eat, have a nap, play a game, look out the window, have a sleep, have a drink etc, are we there yet? I'm not sure how this flight would have been in the 1960s or 70s for example when IFE was a book or pack of cards and you stopped three or four times on route.

My longest was FCO-PHL about 6 years ago on the now former US Airways A330-300. The flight was a good 9 hours, and seemed even longer since they were having IFE problems and had to reset the whole system. Mine, which had been working fine, never came back on and the FA said there was nothing they could do. This was 1.5 hours into the flight.

I suppose it was a BA flight LHR-BKK a very long time ago... It was 1997, I had no idea about these things, but I remember it was about 14 hours. Or maybe the return.

Of what I really remember, probably LHR-SFO or LHR-DFW, I would have to check.

I did EWR-SIN trip once. I liked the EWR-SIN flight. 11pm departure and 5am arrival was not that bad in business class. I slept for 11 hours and jetlag was not too much of a problem. The return SIN-EWR 11am-5pm flight was much rougher and jetlag was miserable.

Haven't done the DFW-SYD nonstop yet which will become the longest on both counts, but I have three trips scheduled on that between now and November.

My longest non-stop was ANC-DNA (and the reverse route a couple years later) on an FT 742. 4389mi
Second longest was ORD-ORY on an AA 762. 4156mi
Third longest was ORY-RDU on another AA 762. 4052mi
Fourth longest would be CRK-NKW on an HA DC8-Combi. 3645mi. Made the reverse route on this as well, but in a USAF C-142.

That FT flight was a pain, as it was an all-coach config for military charters. Probably 550+ pax on that flight. The NKW-CRK route in the C-142 was worse, as it was bench seating along the inside of the fuselage, and was rather cold in back.

If you are serious - Very nice, mate! That's awesome!

May I ask what the equipment was?
Quoting BubbleFrog (Reply 40):

Wow. And I second the question about the plane.

Did JNB-MEL and back with V Australia in 2010 when they briefly operated the route for about a year.
Not sure of the distance because it wasn't the optimum route taken with the 77W, as it couldn't go too far south, routing MEL-PER-MRU-JNB, with the return leg being around 16hours
