RE: Longest Flight

Mine is SFO-FRA on a UA 744, ~11 Hours. Miserable flight.

Quoting ab486 (Reply 17):
plus having good entertainment (either AVOD or personally owned), these long flights often go by pretty quickly.

This right here is why AVOD and/or fully available power for personal devices is an absolute necessity on long haul. With how terrible the seats are getting, sleep will be harder and harder anyways. And a book... Well, I enjoy reading. But not when there's some other person right next to me and I'm stuck in a loud tube with the only place to put a book to read from is the tray table to bend my head and slouch forward to read from, with the inevitably nasty glare from the person next to me whom was trying to sleep but blames me for his inability to sleep despite him probably not being able to sleep due to the seat anyways, and of course lack of amenity kit with eye shades on such an airline also makes it worse.

Quoting LPDAL (Reply 28):
Plus we had to stop in Dakar, Senegal for fuel which more or less added three hours travel time each way.

Did you have to deplane during that? I'm quite curious to see a report that has that detail...

Quoting ThrottleHold (Reply 35):

Wow! Did you do a report on it?

Air Canada flight AC1 from Toronto to Tokyo (Narita) which is 5568 nm and took 12:58 hours. I personally don't mind those long flights, actually I like tuning out of everything for a few hours.

LHR-SIN on G-BNLN and VH-OQE
MAD-SCL

the longest sequence of flights was
(Vaisala, Savai'i, Samoa - 2 hours by jeep across the island, 2 hours to Upolu by ferry, 20 minutes by taxivan to APW)
APW-AKL on NZ (763)
AKL-SYD on QF (738)
SYD-BKK-LHR on QF (744)
LHR-FRA on LH (321)
FRA-VNO on LH (735)
(7 minutes by train to the central railway station and 1h40min by bus home to Kaunas)

62 hours in total, and my 6-year-old son did not complain any single time

IAD-JNB in 2009 with SAA on an A346, a few weeks before the non-stop was discontinued.
12,813 km
17 hrs

Also, ORD-PEK with Hainan Airlines on a B788.
13:35 hrs

The flight to JNB just crushed my mind and body. My brain was sore, my muscles ached, and my head was still in the clouds. While it was only a few hours longer than the PEK flight, I landed in PEK in significantly better shape. This is my personal testament to the benefits of flying the 787.

#1 was SFO-SYD for me in 2008

#2 was DTW-OSA back in 1992 on a NW 744.

#3 was SFO-CDG this last summer.

This makes a point, however. People on this site talk about how longer range makes airplanes better, but once you are over 15h in duration...airlines don't operate flights that long.

I have stood on all seven continents (yes, even that one) and SFO-SYD is the longest flight I've ever taken and it's not even 7,000nmi on the great circle.

So tell me again why airlines need OEMs to build airplanes with 8,000nmi+ effective range?

At the age of 62yrs and after some 30yrs of flying I have found that my body can now only take a max of 9-10hrs in a metal tube, be it Club or First.Last time I flew Y I was 21, and I hold my hat off to people who can do that!
I now plan my trips with the break in which ever country is on route to my final destination, as I feel that the journey is half the fun of getting there, experience more on the way and you will be better for it.

My top 3 are all very similar in distance:

1. DTW-CDG: 3962mi, AF A343
2. LHR-ORD: 3953mi, AA B772
3. CDG-PIT: 3910mi, DL B752 (in Economy Comfort, empty middle seat. Felt like F.)

For domestic US, it is:

1. HNL-SEA: 2677mi
2. MCO-SEA: 2554mi
3. BOS-SEA: 2496mi

I do BOS-SEA often. Westbound it drags on and on.

No, the plan was to just visit Chicago for 4 nights at the end of February on an SK award ticket. Then the EY mistake fare came up ($300 ORD-AUH-ORD), and as I had already been to Chicago before I jumped on that.

My longest non-stop was ANC-DNA (and the reverse route a couple years later) on an FT 742. 4389mi
Second longest was ORD-ORY on an AA 762. 4156mi
Third longest would be CRK-NKW on an HA DC8-Combi. 3645mi. Made the reverse route on this as well, but in a USAF C-142.

That FT flight was a pain, as it was an all-coach config for military charters. Probably 550 pax on that flight. The NKW-CRK route in the C-142 was worse, as is was bench seating along the inside of the fuselage, and was rather cold in back.

Interesting, didn't even think of domestic. The longest domestic legs I've been on are LAX-ANC (first leg of the FT flight I posted earlier) at 2345mi, and ATL-SFO on a Delta L1011 (don't remember if it was a -250 or a -500) (2139mi).

About nine months ago had to inspect 2 vessels in a hurry, one in North Borneo and the other in
Gothenburg, starting from DXB

We flew DXB/BAH/DOH/SIN/KUL/BKI/SDK/BKI/SIN/DOH/FRA/GOT/IST/DXB - 14 sectors in 9 days
Didn't know which way was up on arrival back in DXB

Not one of them overly long, never bothered to calculate the distance as its more like something

Longest flight was AMS to MEX 11 hours 50 minutes on December 2013 on board "Nairobi" PH-BFN. Getting to Europe was done also on KLM on PH-BFV "Vancouver" on November 2013. Luck enough to fly a Combi 747 and a full pax 747 on the same journey.

Longest for me was DFW-FRA on an American 767 at 5,143 statute miles (9.5 hours eastbound, 11.5 westbound). Going east, it was a nice, new plane that had only been delivered a few days prior, so that made it pretty pleasant.

Longest in terms of distance is JFK-NRT, which I do once or twice per year. That's a flight time of 12:30 to 14:30 depending on direction.

I'm actually used to it, to the point that a 4-5 hour flight to me now feels "short". I flew back to JFK from LAS a couple months ago (took the train out there) and it felt like we were wheels up, then wheels down. I didn't even feel like I had time to finish a movie.

I guess I've learned to slow down when I'm traveling. Most people don't even realize how busy they are until they have some time cut off from the rest of the world. At first I fought that and tried to fill up all my time on board with work or other things, and if I ran out of things to do, I'd get antsy. But now I kind of just zone out for a while, watch movies when I feel like it, read a little bit, etc. I don't really get bored anymore. It actually feels like I have some space to think, which I usually don't.

I still find flying in general pretty unpleasant, but it's mostly for comfort reasons, not trip length. My favorite trips are multi-day train trips, but on the train you can walk around, you have all the legroom you could want, etc. The one time I flew business class JFK-NRT was pretty fantastic and I actually didn't want to land.

My longest flight to date is SIN-LHR (flight SQ306, operated by a Boeing 777-300ER) with a flight time of 13 hours, 58 minutes. I was dreading it, expecially sitting in seat 56K, the very last row of the aircraft with a seat that wouldn't recline fully. But it actually wasn't that bad; I slept for a few hours and by the time I'd eaten and watched a movie, before I knew it there was only two hours left of the flight with no idea where the previous 12 hours had gone.

It's amazing how awful it gets after ten or so hours, isn't it?

I remember noting that even if I slept 8 hours on SFO-SYD, I'd still have another seven hours to kill. Fortunately, with the help of some meds, I slept for ten. It was awesome; like supersonic travel except I arrived rested.

On the way back, I had lost my meds and the man two seats over had a cough. I was awake the Whole. Damned. Flight. And mind you, I was a healthy 30yo competitive swimmer. It was awful.

My top 6 longest (duration) flights are:

1. LAX-CAN CZ A380 Business 7231 miles, 14h26m
2. SIN-LHR SQ A380 Economy 6765 miles, 13h29m
(3. SIN-LHR BA B77W Economy 6765 miles, 13h20m)
4. FRA-EZE LH 744 First 7132 miles, 13h17m
5. CAN-LHR CZ A330 Business 5911 miles, 12h40m (I flew this same sector a few weeks later, and the flight time was just 11h18)
6. HKG-LHR NZ B772 Premium Economy 5994 miles, 12h32m

Long flights are fine, as long as you are well prepared. Long flights in F are just a pleasure! My #1 flight LAX-CAN was so comfortable. I was actually offered an upgrade to F, but preferred my cosy pod in J. #4 FRA-EZE in F was perfect. A long leisurely dinner, a full 9 hour sleep on a proper bed, then a tasty breakfast.

So this post made me think about how much long-haul I've done. Looking at individual flights, if I draw a line at 4000 miles, which would exclude all of my Americas travel and all but one TATL trip, I end up with the following (all in J or above thankfully):

EWR SIN SQ A345 9534 mi
HKG JFK CX B77W 8072 mi
SYD LAX UA B744 7488 mi
ICN JFK KE B77W 6906 mi
TPE LAX BR B77W 6799 mi
LHR SIN QF A388 6765 mi
DTW ICN DL B77E 6636 mi
LHR KUL MH A388 6593 mi
TPE SFO BR B74E 6469 mi
YVR HKG CP B744 6392 mi
AMS CPT KL B77E 5998 mi
JNB CDG AF B744 5410 mi
PEK YVR CP B763 5291 mi
ZRH JNB SR M11 5211 mi
MEL HKG CX A333 4590 mi
HNL AKL UA B742 4389 mi
BOS FCO AZ A332 4093 mi

My longest individual trip was MEL-HKG-JFK-BOS at 12849 mi.

I couldn't sleep at all, so I was awake for the whole thing and got very familiar with the IFE. Was so glad to land in DFW and didn't mind the long walk to get my AA flight to ORD. When I moved to SYD last September, I flew LAX-SYD and I got some better drugs that helped me sleep. Landed in SYD on early Monday morning and when my company picked me up and took me straight to the office, that little amount of sleep helped me survive the day.

LAX-MEL on the 744ER. Just over 16hrs, absolutely horrendous flight and took a few weeks to recover. All the trans-pac I've done have been USA to Australia and varied between 14 & 16hrs.

SFO-DXB 77W, 15hr 55min...up over the North Pole and down into Russia and on to DXB.

SYD-LAX on a QF A380 and with a very bad sinus infection. Along with being my longest flight, it was also definitely the worst; none of the sleep aids I'd picked up just before the flight had any lasting effect, and I woke up just about every hour expecting to be further into the flight than we really were.

All my longest flights have been from Australia to/from the USA across the Pacific:

By Distance:
SYD-DFW on a Qantas 747-400ER (13,805km)

By Time:
DFW-BNE on a Qantas 747-400ER (16 hours)

Other contenders on the list that I have flown several times are BNE-LAX/LAX-BNE on Qantas 747-400/ERs (11,531km each way, around 13hrs east bound, 14hrs west bound)

I like the longer flights personally, I find I can get my body adjusted better to the time changes thanks to being able to time the sleep better during the flight thanks to its length....Plus I just love being onboard 747s I don't want to get off them!
Flown on:
DHC8Q200,DHC8Q300,DHC8Q400, EMB145,E170,E175,E190, A319,A320,A321,A332,A333,A343,A380, MD80, B712,B733,B734,B737,B738,B743,B744,B744ER,B762,B763,B77W

Yep, i've always said I would find myself getting over jet lag easier to Australia than the East coast.

For me it should have been DFW-BNE, but we diverted to AKL. It is therefore LAX-MEL
