Across The US - No A320s Please

Hi all - long-time listener, first-time caller.

As a bit of background, I did a bit of flying around the US-Canada last year (LAX-LAS-YYC-YVR-YYZ-LAX) on a mixture of UA and AC. With the only flight that wasn't on an A320s being the short hop on a 757 from LAX to Vegas, I got a bit sick of little single-aisle workhorses.

I'm coming up again in October and will be hitting a few other destinations. Yet to be booked, but at this stage, LAX, JFK, MSY and YUL are definites.

Any tips on getting around the joint without the ubiquitous 320s or 737s? I'd prefer Star Alliance carriers if possible. Is anyone flying A330s LAX-JFK?

LAX-JFK (United 757)
JFK-MSY on either a JetBlue E-190 or a Delta CRJ-900
you could also do EWR-MSY (United has an E-145 offered amongst the 737s and a320s)
MSY-ORD-YUL (United equipment varies but there's usually a mixture of regional, Boeing, and Airbus)

You could also sub in EWR for JFK if you really want to get the US-of-A's sole remaining Star member.
Those are obviously just some options. I'd imagine you'd want a more direct routing such as LAX-MSY-NYC-YUL, but LAX-MSY is full of 737s (3 737-800s from Delta and 2 737-700s from Southwest plus an a320 from United)

If you are coming to the US from Australia on QF (not Star Alliance, though) you are allowed to stopover in LAX for an indefinite amount of time and then take the QF 747 or A330 flight from LAX-JFK as a standalone flight.

Delta also flies a 757 + 767 on the JFK-LAX route.

Yeah, both the 320s and 737s. I live in WLG so they are pretty much the only jets I get to see, apart from the odd QF and VA 737-800s from across the Tasman.
With NZ in the latter stages of replacing its domestic 737s with 320s, they're also what I end up flying 90% of the time.
I guess what I was getting at was I'd like the chance to fly something I don't see literally every day!

YVR-JFK is served by a CX 777, while AC serve YVR-YYZ with 777s, 787s, and sometimes A330s.

the 757s are pretty rare (outside the US) so id try the UA P.S. service

That flight is a 767, not an a330.

You can fly a 787 from LAX-IAH and a 777 on IAH-IAD on UA.

AA flies LAX-DFW with B767s and DFW-MSY with MD80s.

If you're willing to part with Star Alliance for this trip, your best bet for some more interesting aircraft will be Delta. For the destinations you've listed above, you can put together routings which include the MD-88, MD-90, B717, B757-200, B757-300, and/or the B767-300, as well as CRJ/ERJs if you're interested in those.

PR also recently started MNL-YVR-JFK using A340-300 with 5th freedom rights YVR-JFK. It must be the only way to fly on an A340 within North America, as was their previous YVR-LAS 5th freedom service that ended a few years ago.

Probably the cheapest option to get on one is LAX-IAH

I'd suggest LAX-DFW on a 763 on AA then the must try ex-workhorse, the S80, from DFW-MSY.

Nothing wrong with flying on a B739ER, after all, that is one aircraft we don't see here in WLG.

Best bet to get some larger/more interesting aircraft is to do hub to hub flying, which it seems like you might. Its in the 320 family, but AA operates the A321T between LAX and JFK, which might be nice to try.

I fly SJC-DFW-RDU regularly on AA's MD-80s. However unfortunately the SJC flights won't last too much longer on the MD-80.

If you want Star Alliance and neither 737s nor A320s then it's UA. It will probably be a 757 from LAX to EWR, but they also sometimes operate 767s and 777s and even sometimes 744s to places like ORD but that's rare. Otherwise, even on the majors it's all A320/737. That's domestic travel in the US.

AA and DL do occasionally fly their A330s domestically. HA, of course, uses the A330 domestically.

Air travel in the USA (and in most regions less than 2,500nm in size) is all about the A320 and 737.

Sometimes also UA sends the 772 between ORD and SFO. Currently they are operating sunday service for the month of April.

Cool, cheers everyone. Booked the international legs to get into the NZ sale, so still have a few internal flights to sort out.

The Embraer is a new family for me so I'm looking forward to that! Hopefully can add a few other new ones when we sort out the other flights.

Or if you don't mind connecting, JFK-ATL-MSY on DL. You can either get 2 MD-88 flights, or a 752 and an MD-88 (at least on the random date I picked, 14 October).

Or if you're completely crazy, it also offered a 2 stop routing via RDU and ATL involving a CRJ-900, MD-90, and MD-88.
