Places You Want To Visit That Most Want To Avoid

Mon May 04, 2015 4:16 am

I was talking with a friend today about places we would want to spend a week or two exploring. I mentioned North Korea. I think it would be incredible to spend a week there seeing the country (even if so much is censored). We hear a lot in the media about the country, but what is it really like?

He thought I was insane. But it got me thinking, are there places you would want to visit that other people find to be completely taboo?

I have a German friend that visited N. Korea in 2013 for a week. It was interesting to say the least.

When you arrive you are assigned to a tour group led by a tour guide. You do not leave the hotel for any reason without the permission of the tour guide. The tour guide determines what you will see and not see. Most of the places you see will be of good quality. While on this tour their tour bus driver had to take a detour unexpectedly and cut through a regular neighborhood. Before they entered the neighborhood every one had to put their cameras away. When they got in this detour neighborhood he said that it was the most poverty stricken area he had ever seen.

All in all he said the trip was ok, but they were under the watchful eye of the tour guide and were reminded to obey what the tour guide tells them to do, otherwise you may be visited by the police.

Too many I could ever visit, but these are high on my to-do list:

Tajikistan
Kyrgyzstan
Armenia
Georgia
Afghanistan (waiting for better times)
Pakistan (waiting for better times)
Yemen (waiting for better times)
Syria (waiting for better times)
Libya (waiting for better times)
Lebanon
Sudan
Mauritania
Kamtchatka
Honduras

The other way round, I generally avoid places which most people want to visit.

Armenia

I've been there. Great country, great food, Yerevan is a very nice, safe and modern city, with lots of things to do.
We had a tour guide who spoke Spanish (very understandable for us, Portuguese speakers), which was essential. Without her I believe we wouln't have enjoyed as much as we did.
Definitely worth the visit.

I flew FLL-ATL-CLE and walked around the streets of downtown Cleveland as it was snowing (a very stark contrast to Fort Lauderale, which is where I reside) despite my father's warnings of it being "The Mistake by the Lake".

It honestly wasn't that bad, and I'm fixing to visit similar cities such as IND, PIT, STL, etc. soon.

I am pretty keen in visiting more Ukraine, I used to work there for 5 months in 2005...
I would love to visit remote breakaway states like Transnistria (and visit Moldavia while at it), and also Nagorno-Karabarkh republic in Armenia... As well as Ablhazia in Georgia.. .These kind of countries.
Also Timor Leste would be interesting. Not sure why but i would love to go there.

A lot of the mentioned places are not really dangerous or such. Like Armenia, Georgia, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro... Actually these are really nice places.
In regards of "strange" countries I have put foot in Kosovo, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Honduras (although only Roatan), Belarus, Ukraine, Belize (but only with a cruise ship), Saudi Arabia (only at the airport due to transfer haha), Musandam (Oman) and probably a few others

I used to be interested in visiting North Korea, Saudi Arabia, and the like, but now...

I'd like to visit Russia - it has a rich history, is so vast, has an extreme climate (ex. in Yakutsk it goes from -30F in the winter to 70F in the summer), and you can take a domestic flight in an A330 or B77W.

I also want to explore more of India. I've been to BLR and some surrounding places, but nothing else. Another interesting place for me is Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, etc.), I know there's tons to see there.

I used to work in a grocery store in a small, rural American town, and my co-workers thought a passport was an SUV. I would travel to China, India, South Africa, and they would think I was going to get murdered or kidnapped, because they've seen too many movies. I would love to visit Iran. Or Croatia. So many places to see.

Malawi on the other hand...

Places I have visited that many people have asked me "why would you go there?"
Venezuela
Colombia
Rwanda
Uganda
Cuba

I don't get the reason why people don't want to visit some places. Usually it's a lack of knowledge or an inability to switch off inaccurate preconceptions/misconceptions that holds people back.

Places I want to visit that others might think are unusual.
DRC
Gabon
Cameroon
Angola
Mali
Comoros
Bhutan
Iran
Paraguay

Actually there are practically no countries I would pass on the opportunity to visit (that aren't in war right now) , I believe it is important to visit if you get the opportunity while the risk is low, you never know when it will take a turn for the worse. Since I have been travelling there Kenya and Venezuela in particular have taken a turn for the worse and countries that I had planned to visit like Syria and Ukraine have become unrealistic as travel tourist destinations.

You should definitely give Ethiopia a try, judging a whole population from the interaction with a few disgruntled airport workers is not sufficient evidence.

Imagine people judging Americans from their experience with the TSA :b

Wouldn't call it unrealistic. I have been in eastern Ukraine just 2 weeks ago to nail the An-140 (Zaporizhia/OZH to be precise), and you wouldn't think of anything unusual being only 200km from Donetsk. Felt totally safe and business as usual. Kiev, too btw.

I've been to Ukraine several times now, visited Chernobyl, Kiev, did a roadtrip from Chisinau (Moldova) through Transnistria to Odessa (Ukraine). Well worth a visit and the current tensions wouldn't prevent me from going again (leaving the 2 eastern trouble-provinces aside).

Actually I did once transfer in Simferopol while it was still Ukrainian, arrived on an Atlant-Soyuz Il-86 from VKO and transferred to a 737-400 from PS. Amazing how things change within a few years. I had written about it here:

On top of my unique list to visit are

North Korea intrigues me, but it seems like you do run the risk of getting arrested for no reason, although most of those arrested seem to have broken a rule they should have known, such as bringing religous materials, etc.

I'd also like to walk around the most decrepit, dilapidated, high-crime area in downtown Detroit. No joke, I actually want to do that.

I've already walked around the Projects in Miami, nobody bothered me. And this was one of those "high crime" Section 8 neighborhoods, too. The folks that live there are actual quite polite and hospitable.

He's not mixing the two up, he is simply stating places he'd like to visit which other people avoid. I also have Detroit on my to-do list (besides a number of 'brutal communist regimes'), and there's nothing offensive about mentioning it here. It doesnt mean that the US and North Korea have anything in common, it is simply of interest of fellow travellers.

There's no random arresting in the DPRK, its in fact the other way round. The DPRK will do everything to make you feel comfortable that you carry a positive message home. You only get in trouble if you are clearly braking the rules, which you will be made aware of by your tour guides upfront. In fact I found the guides more foregiving than for example any security staff in western countries. We broke the photographing rules several times and never got into trouble, because our guides took the responsibility for us. So there's clearly nothing to worry if you follow the basic rules (like in any other country). However if you choose not to support the government with your money, than thats a fair choice, because your money will eventually end up with the government. You could argue the other way round that tourism and interaction opens a country. I have been twice in the DPRK so far and enjoyed it to have a view beyond the media coverage you usually get. And it was worth every cent, I'd go again any time.

I've long had a fascination with the 'stans and the regions along the Silk Route. Not desperate to visit them, but curious. Flying high over Afghanistan during the day was an amazing experience. Such stark, desolate mountains and the valleys where life clings to.

That made me laugh

On a more serious note I have found through my travelling never to judge a country by it's (media) cover(age). They only sell whatever will make money. For example I have travelled to North Korea, Ukraine (pre and post violence), Venezuela etc. and felt perfectly safe there, yet bizarrely the only places where I have ever been threatened, almost hit by a car passing red lights, or had someone try to attack and steal from me happen to be in popular tourist parts of the UK and the States.

Come on now... I grew up outside of Detroit and the city is not as bad as everyone says. There are bad parts of every city. Right now I live in a "bad" part of Indianapolis by some peoples standards and have never had a problem.

Back on topic, I have been to El Salvador and most people questioned why I was going there... It has one of the highest murder rates in the world but it was one of favorite trips ever. Some of the most friendly people ever and a beautiful country.

Here is my list of unusual countries I want to visit. Nicaragua, Cuba, Colombia, Georgia, Armenia, and Myanmar

*Some* of the posts here are pretty naive. Of course nobody ever thinks they're going to be a victim of anything until something actually happens - otherwise no one would ever step foot into a "bad neighborhood". But statistically, there are places where crime is very high, both in absolute terms and relative to elsewhere. That doesn't mean you're going to be shot the minute you get off the bus, but the numbers aren't made up. The people that live there get by because they know what they're doing; they see the neighborhood every day, they know what to do and how to avoid trouble. This is the kind of thing that can happen to outsiders that don't: http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/in...att_landrys_family_devastated.html

To say you want to visit one of those places either to be able to tell your friends back home that you did it or to somehow "prove" to others that the media's got it all wrong is really, really stupid, to be totally frank about it. It doesn't prove anything because the statistics are what they are, and you're taking a risk on yourself for no real benefit. Are you going sightseeing in these areas? Why are you really there? Are you expecting the residents to do a little dance for you or something?

I say that as a native New Yorker who has lived in some legitimately bad neighborhoods (like the lower east side of Manhattan in the early 90's, when there were about 30 murders per year in the area, and I walked past/around several of them). Nobody in these neighborhoods wants your crime tourism.

I would like to add that I felt much safer strolling the badly lit streets of Addis Ababa alone while being drunk and high last year, than most major European cities :P

The fact that in all those places one has a hightened awareness of the environment around you due to higher perceived risk has a lot to do with it. We are all at higher risk when we are complacent of a seemingly passive environment than alert in a statisically more dangerous environment..

Have you seen photos of the beaches the Somali pirates operate from?

Just imagine the tourism potential of that...

I live in Houston. No one wants to visit here. :P

In all seriousness, I want to see North Korea, Iran, Cuba, and honestly I wouldn't mind seeing Nigeria just for the sake of going to Africa. And I've heard good things about Mongolia.

One place I really want to go that people don't go to (not because its bad, but because they haven't heard of it), is Namibia.
When wasn't America great?

Top on my list is Israel. That said, like many A.netters, I would love to explore so many places. Culturally, West Africa (Ghana, Mali, Senegal) are of great interest to me. South Africa. Southeast Asia. New Zealand.

Even at tourist traps, one can find something interesting off the beaten path. Probably with one exception: Las Vegas. I have absolutely no desire to set foot in the place. It would be fine for plane spotting, but to me there is nothing else of interest there. Blecch!

I'm a huge fan of 20th century urban architecture, and some of the best of it is found in downtown Detroit.

Except, I'm not going to plan a leisure trip there, 'cause... it's, uhmmm... Detroit.

(Detroit, it's not me; it's you.)

A lot of the places I'd like to hit have already been mentioned (Iran, several African nations), but the biggest thing about my travel is I want it to always be off the beaten track. I always want to try and experience things that the average traveler doesn't. My wife and I want to go to China in a few years, but our plans have always been to fly into Beijing and take the train in country, and then fly home from a different city if possible. We don't want the packaged experience of staying in Beijing and seeing what everyone else does (though I'd love to go see Mao, if only to say I did).

Even when we travel here in the states, we try and go by the "no chains" rule when we eat out. If we can eat there when we're at home, it's off the list of possibilities unless nothing else is available or we're on the road. The whole idea to me of traveling somewhere new is to experience that area, not something I can do back home.

I'd also like to walk around the most decrepit, dilapidated, high-crime area in downtown Detroit.

?? About the worst thing that would happen in downtown/midtown Detroit is your car getting broken into. It's one of the safest areas of the city.

Some people in this country have the mistaken impression that crime in some areas is so rampant that they'll pick off random people on the sreet in broad daylight. This is almost universally not the case. Granted, there are some areas in some cities where you might not want to hang out after dark, but even then your chances of having anything happen randomly are low. Not non-existent, but low.

I've found that if you walk with a confident but not cocky manner, and act like you are not a tourist and you belong where you are, no one messes with you. Common sense stuff like not flashing cash or making it obvious that you have money helps. When my mother lived in Italy during the the late 70's when the mob was still a big thing there, the Navy folks told her on arrival that the mafia wanted nothig to do with foreigners, especailly military family members. Know what to look for and ignore them, and you would be left alone was the rule, and it worked. I would pretty safely assume that would work for Detroit or South Central. Know what to look for, ignore and don't meddle in things, and the locals won't have any interest in you.

I'd gather that some folks just like to visit areas they feel are decrepit, dilapidated and "high crime" just to feel better about themselves and their place in society, rather than to see how the other half lives and do something about it.

Cuba is high on the list. I have been trying to get there for a year but can't find the time.

I am absolutely dying to go to North Korea on the Aviation Tour--one of the last chances in the world to fly some exotic Soviet beauties and to see a country most wouldn't even think of visiting.
