RE: Places You Want To Visit That Most Want To Avo

Sun May 10, 2015 5:40 am

I travel to go to places most don't particularly want to go.

Armenia...just got back from there 2 weeks ago
Ukraine? I see your Ukraine and raise you a Chernobyl (yep, even spent the night)
Kyrgyzstan during the 2010 troubles? Didn't stop me, I was going around the world that year
Egypt 2 weeks before the Arab Uprising? No problem, but you could smell the tension in the air
Uruguay....got jumped and robbed, but would go back tomorrow
Detroit, sure! Slinked under the fence and went in the old Central Station, don't mind the guy stealing copper....

Where do I want to go?
Cuba for sure before it changes (I had the pleasure of seeing Myanmar before cell phones and Shanghai before skyscrapers)
Would like to see Kazakhstan and the Baikonur Cosmodrome before Russia moves their launch facilities, and while there go see the dying Aral Sea.
Bolivia for sure
Same with Iran
Much of Africa would be great in particular Senegal, Namibia, Ethiopia, Madagascar

And yes, I do enjoy the nicer spots in the world, Paris, Bali, Tuscany, sure, that is a different sort of travel which I also enjoy.

Here is my world in photos: http://www.pixelmap.com/sl.html

Mongolia

That's another place I could go to tomorrow, but it's not often on my mind. But from some of the pictures I've seen, it looks simply amazing. I'd love it if anyone in the thread could give their impressions.

I live in Houston. No one wants to visit here. :P

Does not surprise me, I have family in Houston and in Minneapolis and most people raise an eyebrow when I say I am going there for holidays, most people tend to think there is really nothing really to see there.

For me an exotic location would be Iceland or Alaska.

I'd gather that some folks just like to visit areas they feel are decrepit, dilapidated and "high crime" just to feel better about themselves and their place in society, rather than to see how the other half lives and do something about it.

That's definitely the reason, no doubt about it.

I went couple of times to downtown Detroit, so after that no country is on my avoid list. Would love to go to Cuba and Vietnam. North Korean, maybe - too unpredictable with US passport.

When I moved from San Francisco to Dallas back in 2000 a friend of mine told me, "nobody travels to Dallas on vacation".

Vietnam unpredictable on a US passport? Maybe in 1976 but not today.

I can confirm that. My nephew is still in the middle of his Asia trip, and he said that Vietnam was awesome and easy to get through. Said he very rarely felt anything near unsafe there.

One of my dreams is to take an African Airport Tour where I visit the airport of every major city in Africa except perhaps Libya and definitely Somalia.
The only limiter to that idea is the lack of a 100 page passport for all of the necessary visa stamps.
Yes, I'd like to see airbus go under so Boeing can have their customers!

You want to travel across an entire continent stuffed with remarkable cultures , dazzling landscapes, tasty cuisines , and an abundance of different people; and all you fancy doing is to confine yourself within the airports?

If I were you, I would give that dream an overhaul.

He was talking about North Korea.

Speaking of which, I would imagine North Korea to be possibly the most predictable on a US passport. And evening on youtube will show you exactly where you'll go and what you'll see. After all the NK travel videos I've seen on youtube, I recognise the inside of some of the restaurants and here and there even some of the staff.

I agree wholeheartedly. Not to mention taking photographs at government instillations like airports in Africa is a good way to find out what a prison cell in Africa looks like,

He was talking about North Korea.

I saw it as him being unsure if a US passport would land him in trouble in all three nations mentioned. I stand corrected though
