Best Seat In First Class

Fri Jun 12, 2015 7:29 pm

Irregardless of airline, I feel like if 1A is open, I will take it. Thoughts?

Whatever's furthest away from the galley and ideally anything that is both an aisle and a window.

I've flown F on EK, SQ, TG and have chosen 1A more than any other. That said, it doesn't really matter and sometimes there's value in being further back from the galley/toilets etc.

I tend to avoid the bulkhead rows (no matter what class I'm flying). I like the option of being able to put something under the seat in front of me for takeoff and landing. When flying F, I usually choose 2A or 2F. Of course, the exact seat number may vary by aircraft/airline. -ir

Frequently 1A isn't necessarily the best seat.

On a 744 you're up against the closet/wall, which may feel claustrophobic

On SQ A380, 1A is next to the stairs

On CX 77W, at 1A you can sometimes hear the galley noise and be exposed to that bright light behind the cockpit

And on domestic mainline, 1A (and the whole row 1) has a lot of galley noise, galley light, and bulk-head problem.

As prestigious as it sounds, "1A" is frequently a bad choice.

REGARDLESS of which seat you get, it is more carrier/AC driven than seat location.

On domestic (AA/DL/UA/VA), I prefer (either) aisle in Row 1.

On international, I usually take (either) window in Row 2.

I prefer window seat on the shady side of the plane. I don't run to the bathroom every two minutes so even in the days of no aisle access, I preferred window.

But the best seat in F? The one you don't have to pay for! I try to get the most expensive seat per mile used if on an award. My best was on QF when I used CO miles and flee LAX-SYD in F, had a stay there, then on to PER (only Y was available), had a stay there, then returned PER-MEL-SYD-LAX in J J F. I can't recall the exact miles used but it was crazy low like 105,000 or 115,000, and had a $/mile value approaching 15 cents. This is the days of $300 transcons earning 6000 miles RT plus bonuses for status. So about 15RT that I was flying anyway costing maybe $5000 earned a free QANTAS trip costing others $15k.

I second that. Nothing quite as horrific as when you want some peaceful shut eye, and it's always that one guy on your same row opening his window wide (while he's napping!) .... especially at that 6am flight when everyone's semi drowsy.

This thread has survived a long time in the main forum, I do have to say.

It's interesting how we obsess about these things. If I'm travelling in a premium cabin, I probably look at my seat selection nearly every day until I travel, to be sure I've considered every factor that could make the difference between a mediocre experience and a fantastic one. Of course, it invariably goes out the window on the day when the seat I've chosen is broken/is next to an infant, or someone 300lbs who farts.

This is in the wrong forum and people that fly in first on full fare consider 1A as the plague. It's almost always a mid tier upgrade so they don't get their first choice. Also, after the 5x a year flyer in 1B blacks out on wine and abien you have to crawl over them to use the lav.

Irregardless isn't a word.

One row behind the bulkhead in the window is the best seat in First, no doubt.

Are we talking US domestic F or real international F?

I don't typically like to sit in front of a bulkhead. I can stretch my legs more underneath a seat, I feel.
