Av Related Street Names Not Near Airports

Mon Jun 22, 2015 10:00 pm

Sure if you are near an airport, you'll get aviation related street names like Airport Rd, Amelia Earhart Dr., Wiley Post Way, even Lockheed Ave, Boeing Ave, but I was driving and I got lost and I wound up on Eastern Lane. I checked and there was a 727 Eastern Lane no where near an airport. Any other similar addresses not near airports.

Plactically every community in Australia bigger than a large village has a Kingsford Smith Drive or some such

I think you might just be reading a touch too much into that specific example. It's not like the word "eastern" has no other meaning outside of aviation.

The streets in one of the business districts of Amsterdam near the Sloterdijk train station are named after airports. You've get Orlysquare, Arlanda Way, Kingsford Road, Changi Road, Tempelhof Road, Narita Road, LaGuardia Way and more:

Close to Brooklands (hence the connection) you have various aircraft related road names (Sopwith Drive, Vickers Drive, Wellington Way, DeHavilland Drive, Viscount Gardens, Avro Way).

In Bishop's Stortford (close to Stansted but still far enough away not to be connected) there's an estate named after airports in the UK (Heath Row, Blackbushe, Rochford Road, Prestwick Drive, Northolt Avenue, Hurn Grove, Manston Drive, Gatwick Close, Alconbury). There are also some other roads there but can't make the aviation connection (Lea Grove, Cranwell Gardens)

There's a cluster of roads near where I am at present all named after aircraft, we've got a Comet Way, a Wellington Avenue, Lysander Drive, Albermarle Road, Lancaster Drive and a few others. The town has never had an airfield.

Most commonly though, here in the UK roads named after aircraft are usually on former airfields, of which we had probably more per square mile at one point than anywhere else in the World. At one stage during WW2 a new airfield was said to open every few days This is quite believable if you consider that my home County of Cambridgeshire alone had at least thirty. Many were less than 3 miles apart

I've driven down Amelia Earhart Rd. in Atchison, Kansas (where she's from)

OK, I'm not the only one thinking this...good. It would be like saying every American Ave. (or similar) is named after the airline. And I'm guessing the 727 is just a coincidence. My best friend lives in a house with a 340 address.

Miami has Aviation Avenue in Coconut Grove. No where near any active airport, but right next to City Hall on Diner Key which used to be home to Pan Am flying boats.

And then Pan American Drive, which is a block away from Aviation Ave, takes you into Miami City Hall.

We also have the Rickenbacker Causeway named after Capt Eddie Rickenbacker, also no where near an airport.

There is a nasty trailer park in Romulus, Michigan, called Royal Village, that has aviation related street names. I know there is a PanAm street. There is also a Piper and Cessna street in there too. I haven't been in there in a long time so I can't remember the others. The place is a DUMP! Most of the trailers are falling down and nearly all of the trailers are 40 plus years old.

Airline Road randomly appears about five miles east of DAL in University Park. Ironically, their neighbors in Highland Park are the ones that complain the most about the plane noise!

There's a Boeing Road in Bedfordview which is about 10km west of JNB. Otherwise just north east of the airport there is an entire suburb with airport names, a mixture of the old South African airports and internationals such as Kloten, Logan, Prestwick, Kennedy, Newark, O'Hare, Orly, Tempelhof, Shannon, Malpensa.... I used to live in Piarco Avenue in the same suburb which is named after an airport in Trinidad and Tobago.

There is an Airline Drive in Houston that is nowhere near IAH or HOU. It's not the best of 'hoods either.

There's a suburb called Raby in southwestern Sydney that has many of these street names. It's major thoroughfare is 'Spitfire Drive' and most of the aviation named streets run off it, such as Hornet Drive etc. The majority of the street names are military-aviation (RAAF) associated, with some common to military and civil aviation such Sunderland and Dakota.

The nearest airports would be Camden, Bankstown and Sydney Kingsford Smith... And none are close!

Quite why this pocket of aviation-named streets were so-named is beyond me! The whole suburb was designed and built about 25 years ago.

This one might be cheating, but in Huntsville, AL there is an Airport Road nowhere near the airport. That Airport Road goes to where the airport used to be (decades ago).

I also know someone that lives in a neighborhood where all the streets have nautical names, but the are isn't really close to water.

Here in PHX, we have a Piedmont Rd (about ten miles south of the airport)
Airport (noun) - A construction site which airplanes tend to frequent
