L1011 Longest Flights

Wed Jul 29, 2015 5:47 pm

I was wondering if anyone can tell us the longest scheduled L1011 flights using the different versions of the Tristar.
I know DL used the 500s on routes like PDX to SEL and possibly PDX to TPE. They also had an ANC-HKG segment (originating LAX) and FRA to both SFO and LAX. The longest -250 route I know was FRA-DFW. I believe BA operated the -500 to Brazil. In terms of the -1, I know EA flew them from JFK to LAX/SFO and I had heard that EA flew them nonstop from MIA to GIG initially after acquiring that long sought after authority. That route quickly went to a DC10-30, though.
Apparently the -500 has close to a 7000s mile range when light enough.

AFAIK, LT used to fly DUS-LAX with L-1011s, using the -500. That route was later flown with an MD-11.

I flew on a Delta L-1011 from HNL to ATL. I am not sure of the exact version of the L-1011 for this flight. I just remember it was on the full size version, not the shorter -500.

Probably a -200, unless it was the -250.

Thanks. I had forgotten about the wonderful LTU. DUS-LAX indeed is a long flight. PA did not seem to use them on flights longer than GIG-JFK. They briefly had an LAX-CCS-GIG L15 route. I am not sure about AC, but perhaps Europe to western Canada. I believe they had an L1011 route YYZ-LHR-BOM-SIN cerca 1985, using the L1011-200(?). I also am not sure about UA's brief use of a few of PA's L15s. Of course, the RAF L15s might hold the range trophy.

I think Royal Jordanian AMM-ORD (-500) tops those mentioned here.

Pretty sure AC also used the L15 on their YYZ-LHR-BOM-SIN route for a while, later replaced with 747s before they dropped both BOM and SIN.

I once flew on a Pan Am L15 SEA-LHR although that route was mainly 747 in those days. I was surprised to see the L15 at the gate that day. Fortunately I was in F class (nonrev) as Pan Am's L-1011-500s had cramped 10-abreast charter-type seating in Y class, surprising for a full-service carrier.

Are you sure AMM-ORD was nonstop? I thought RJ had AMM-AMS-ORD-LAX in L15. However, you may be on to something with RJ. I believe they had a VIE-MIA route in L15 originating in AMM, naturally. Probably not the longest distance but long going into the prevailing winds.

AMM-ORD is 5419nm. There is no way a L1011 could do that in any sort of passenger configuration.

In 1984 and 1985 I flew GIG - JFK - GIG on PA Tristar's, also BA and TAP Tristars were regular in GRU flying LHR - GRU and LIS - GRU until the middle of 1990's also until begining of the 2000's TAAG was flying Luanda - GIG with Tristars.

It had a refueling stop in AMS.

BWIA used to fly BGI to ARN and ZRH with the -500s... Not the longest, but still noteworthy?

AC certainly ran YVR-LHR-YVR with L15s and I've been told YVR-YYC-FRA-YYC-YVR but I've never seen it in a timetable.

YYZ-LHR-BOM-SIN was also an L15 route at the beginning, there was at least one L15 with the Singapore tail titles as well, though the 74Ms took over the route later.

Eastern only had -1s, way beyond that's model's range. EA did fly L10s into South America, but via routes like MIA-PTY-LIM-SCL-EZE

BW (BWIA) used to fly L1011-500s (Tristars) on routes from POS to ZRH, FRA, LHR, YYZ and JFK. While not the longest route, the Tristars were used as a reliever aircraft between POS and TAB many years ago when my family were returning from a holiday in TAB.

Did TWA have any somewhat long routes on their L1011's? or were they all the larger shorter range versions uses mainly domestically or some just going over the Atlanta to Europe?

The TW L1011 routes to Europe were all long for the -1 and -50 variants that they used. I know they flew from JFK to AMS, BRU, FRA, CDG, LHR, MAD, and LIS. They also did a PHL-LHR in the L1011. BOS to Europe was certainly possible as was trans-con from JFK and BOS to LAX and SFO. The ORD-LHR route was operated by a 747 as far as I am aware.
I also forgot they did an IAD-CDG in the L1011 for awhile in the mid-1980s.

My longest L-1011 trip was a 9 hr MIA-ATL-SEA-PDX on a Delta full sized Tristar in 1982. Thankfully, only the Miami - Atlanta sectors were full, for the other segments it was no more than half full.

Delta's L-1011s then were 2-5-2 in economy IIRC. The first time I flew on an EA L-1011 in 1971, the configuration was 2-4-2 with a little hanging closet in the middle of the 4 seat row. Yes, it was sweet.

The only thing neater than the closet in the middle of the 4 seats would have been the downstairs lounge that PSA was considering for their L1011 fleet. They had the air stairs built into the belly area for entrance at airports that did not have jetways or portable stairs that could reach the rather high L1011 main doors.

TW used the -50 on close in routes from JFK such as AMS, LHR and BRU. IIRC, a.net member Tristarsteve used to ground handle these at ARN as well.

My first flight overseas was with my high school German class, when we flew LTU on an L1011 from LAX to DUS. Many of my firends were surprised the aircraft could make such a long flight.

On the opposite note, the shortest L1011 flight I ever took was on TWA from SAN to LAX. It was a tag on to the LAX-LHR flight, but I was just a local SAN-LAX passenger. Is was a great short hop, to do such a short flight on such a large aircraft.

Early 80s I recall seeing a BA L1011-500 at MEX a few days a week. I think it was LGW-MSY-MEX.

Definitely not the longest but Hawaiian used to fly TriStars to Sydney for a relatively short time before withdrawing from Australia and returning years later with 767s.

shouldn't the -500 do 6000nm ESAD with some 25+ tons of payload?

Best regards
