Favourite 5 Modern Liveries?

Sun Sep 06, 2015 1:07 am

Fairly simple, I'd like to know what people's favourite 5 liveries that are either in use now or have been in the last 5 years.

Mine:

1. Air Tahiti Nui
2. Fiji Airways
3. Virgin Atlantic
4. British Airways
5. Singapore Airlines

Honourable mentions go to Etihad's new livery, Korean Air, Thai Airways and Cathay Pacific.

Rgeards,
Martin.

Bah.

I like the old 70's and early 80's liveries, with cheatlines and wide, sleek lettering (EASTERN, PIEDMONT, DELTA).

I find myself not objecting as much I first thought I would to American's new livery; I soooo loved the no-frills timelessness of their earlier one. The tailfin design could be more elegant though.

Tailfin-wise, no one can beat SA.

I respect the old livery for what it was but I'm glad they changed it. The old one was looking really dated and the chrome made the planes seem dirty IMO. While I generally approve of the new livery, the tail still bothers me slightly.

I like a livery that steers clear of the cliched star or bird logo the tail. I much prefer flowing works of art where the tail and fuselage merge together.

Aeroflot
American
Asiana
Avianca
Etihad

Aeroflot ranks highly on my list - really well put together. And on an IL-96...

I've always admired the QF livery as simple but not bland, and I like the new "beefy roo", but I do lament the loss of the gold stripe that used to separate the white from the red on the fuselage.

BA's current look is nothing to complain about but alas it just cannot stand against the Landor livery for sheer class.

Some great choices in the responses. Thankfully there are no wrong answers here!

I see that FJ, TG, HA, EY, VS and VN are all popular choices. Something about them is just so appealing!

Quoting bunumuring (Reply 4):
1. Etihad (far and away my current favourite)

It would top BA and SQ in my list, IF IT HAD THE ENGINES PAINTED THE GOLDEN SAND COLOUR! My OCD dies when it looks at EY!

I wonder though if in a few years I do this again and we get any more LCCs, while I see no problem with functional but distinctive liveries, it would be nice to see one come up with something elegant and classy to match the best of the world's full-service airlines!

I don't know why, but I prefer the current livery. I can't put a finger on it, Landor was so distinctive, classy and timeless, but I just find myself preferring the current.

This is in no way binding, and is subject to change at any time (also in no particular order):

1) Azerbaijan Airlines
2) Ethihad (new)
3) Vietnam Airlines
4) American Airlines
5) Virgin Atlantic

I can say that AV and NK are at the bottom.

However, although it's not an airline, this has to be near the top:

HA, QF, GA and too a lessor extent EK all have something in common IMHO: they use white to their advantage. They maintain sleek simplicity that says "understated elegance" without going to the boring extremes of MU (new) and JL. The key is that they have a strong, bold branding on the tail that extends over the fuselage, breaking up the sea of "Euro White". That's what's missing in the AV and IB liveries IMHO, the tail is just as much a sea of bland nothingness as the rest of the aircraft.

That's funny, because I included Eastern among my favorite historical liveries, but then I started to wonder if it's really "historical" since the New Eastern has revived it (I think that thread specified no liveries that are currently in use).

RE: Favourite 5 Modern Liveries?

I wanted to add an honorable mention for Thomas Cook's new livery. At first I didn't like the grey, but now I understand the symbolism: grey for typical UK weather and yellow for TCX's sun destinations Big grin I also like the interim livery.
