When Was The Last Time Channel 9 Worked For You?

Thu Sep 24, 2015 2:00 pm

I have flown many UA AC lately and while many had the "Channel 9" option in the IFE, all I typically get is silence. Nada. Nothing. Perhaps captains just turn it off automatically these days? I find it quite disappointing as I quite enjoy listening to ATC calls.

When was the last time Channel 9 worked for you?

I fly UA a few times a year, and I don't remember the last time Channel 9 was operating. Definitely a bummer, especially on my recent SFO-CDG and LHR-SFO flights.

It is definitely less available than it used to be. On the narrow bodies, it's pretty much gone as they've removed the IFE and gone with Wifi.

On the 767 400s it is integrated with the flight map, assuming the pilots turn it on.

Within the pilot's groups, I don't think it is that popular. One of the items I've heard is they don't want passengers complaining to government agencies and/or United corporate on perceived issues that might be happing on the plane (and without the entire context)

However, United has said it is a unique service and they are trying to find ways to enable it on more planes.

At the end of the day, it will always be at the pilot's discretion.

With the numerous UA flights I've taken, I haven't heard Ch 9 since July 2009 on a DEN-ORD flight.
The most obvious proof for intelligent life in the universe is that they haven't tried to contact us.

I found it last year on an LAX-ORD flight pre wifi Installation on a 752. Pilot turned it off.
A FA I know said they will bring it back with wifi installation as a feature but no date.

The last time Ch9 worked for me was early April on EWR-DEL. I especially loved the ATC communication transition from Pakistan to India. The english language tone and pleasantries change was so perceptible. Since then, not one flight has had Ch9 turned on.

I'm a permier gold, which should give you an idea about the rate of United flights I'm taking...
And I've had it twice in 2015.
Both were on 757-222s.
It was one of the reasons I liked flying United, back in the day.
It's so rare now I hardly get my hopes up. Especially since the new Airbus config doesn't even offer it.

Was a wonderful thing, and my wife, a nervous flyer, always found it calming.

Coolest time listening in was a busy day around ORD with many flights requesting diversions over and around thunderstorms. Busy controllers.

Flying 50-75K a year on UA, I haven't heard ch 9 in over 2 years. Earlier post mentioned 752's having it more available that narrow bodies, which was the case here in SAN. However, SAN has seen a big reduction in the amount of 757 service here, and I miss listening in.

I flew PVG - EWR this May and it was on then.

Actually, with the exception of 787 flights, I don't remember not hearing Ch 9 on my international flights with them. I've flown mostly to Munich (from IAH and ORD, mainly) and remember it for those flights, but it was also on for IAH - NRT in April 2014.

Maybe I've just gotten empathetic pilots!

I finally got it on my 6th and 7th UA flights respectively, doing MCO-ORD-MUC last June on the 757 and 777. I absolutely loved it. The approach into ORD was just spectacular! I thanked the 757 captain for it when he was greeting the pax while deboarding, he definitely grinned at that.

I really with more airlines would do this, but I guess there's very little demand from passengers..

Just flew HKG-ORD yesterday and it was working.

On the ground at FRA on 28 May of this year. Alas, the flight was cancelled long after we had left the gate due to a massive Fraport cock-up, so essentially all I got to hear was "UA somethingorother, please head to apron parking position suchandsuch, there is an issue."
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

March 2014 LAX-LHR on a 772. Ch9 was on until right when we started the Atlantic Crossing.
