Finnair Long Layovers

Tue Dec 01, 2015 9:17 pm

Hi all Happy December

I just have a question, I know there is only 1 flight a day HEL-HKG but why is the layover 11 hours??? I know some of you might think that is a silly question/topic but it is bugging me any one can explain??? why can't they find a way to reschedule other inbound flights so the connection time is better.
thanks all...

2 reasons:
1 - HKG is tricky because the timezone and flight length don't allow for the best connections in HEL if the plan returned right away.

2 - Passengers prefer long flights overnight and the amount revenue they receive flying at night (at a preferred time) outweighs the cost of grounding the aircraft for 11 hours.
Let's fly! Unless it's on a CRJ 200, then I'll stay down here.

A lot of the European airlines that fly to Hong Kong have this, it is nothing unique to AY. This is primarily because people love the midnight departures from HKG so they can arrive in Europe in the morning. TK, BA, AF, LH have flights that have roughly the same schedule. Also, as HKG is a longer route to Asia from HEL, they cannot use 1 plane within a 24-hour gap, and with HKG being such a business orientated city, such a long layover is justified.

Would you please explain? Unless you are going out and back on the same plane YOU don't have an 11 hour layover, the plane does.

Confused!

Your post appears to be with regard to the amount of time the AY aircraft spends on the ground in HKG before it's return flight to HEL not the amount of time you will be spending on a 'layover' in Helsinki with your small child.

as to 'why such long layover': AY has only 1 flight a day both MIA-HEL and HEL-HKG and v.v.
both routes are planned considering:
- best timing Europe-USA, being day flights EU-US permitting European feeding, and evening flights back, again per mitting US-EU connections
- best timings EU-HKG, permitting connections from/to Europe both ways

For AY, I imagine connections from US (basically JFK and MIA) to HKG are of minor importance.

Definitely take a bus or taxi to downtown HEL. Great city for a day trip.

I love the grilled reindeer and loganberry.

With that long a layover, why not venture into Helsinki? There is new train service directly to the airport and I know there are regular busses. Its a great little city.

Yes takes 30 min to the city, costs 5 euros. An underground walkway from the terminals to the station should be completed by the end of the year, until that there's a free shuttle bus.

HEL is child friendly but the long flights + long layovers must be exhausting for a 2 year old, considering a day room in a airport hotel? GLO Hotel Airport is inside T2: http://glohotels.fi/en/hotels/glo-hotel-airport

Hilton Airport is close too, more services: http://www3.hilton.com/en/hotels/fin...elsinki-airport-HELAIHI/index.html
