Two Closest Airports Served By The Same Airline

Wed Dec 23, 2015 4:39 pm

The title may not be obvious, but with the recent news that KLM are soon to stop serving Cologne (CGN), which is only around 65km from Dusseldorf (DUS), and well served by road and train links, I was wondering if this was the shortest distance between airports served by the same airline.

Can anyone get closer than 65km?

Southwest and others serve both CLE and CAK which are about 64km apart.

Back in the day, Wright Air Lines and later Comair and Continental Express both flew into CLE and BKL which is only 18km apart.

There are plenty of metro areas served by multiple airports closer together than that. I don't know that it's the closest, but for example, LGA-JFK is listed as 17km. SFO-OAK is similar at 18km.

Another thing to keep in mind is places on small islands that are connected by air service. WRY (Westray) and PPW (Papa Westray) show up as a mere 3km apart, and they famously have nonstop service between them (obviously on a single airline).

Probably quite a few examples of this with metropolitan cities that have multiple airports.

Driving distance between SFO and OAK is 31.6 miles or 50.86 km.

Distance between SFO and SJC is 33.8 miles or 54.40 km.

Now of course, this is driving distance. SFO and OAK are much closer to each other than that if drawn a straight line across the water.

You have 5 commercial airports in LA basin served many cases by same airlines.

Closest ones are:

LAX-LGB - 22mi / 35km driving distance
LGB-SNA - 21mi / 33km driving distance
Be closer if you simply use straight line distances

Its even closer in NYC such as between JFK-LGA which is 12mi/19km driving distance

Interesting topic, thank you.

Southwest at LAX and BUR comes to mind. BUR is about 33 miles north of LAX (or about 54 km). I'm certain someone else here will be able to come up with something closer?

Now if Horizon Air started service at BFI, that would be close!

Even if we use the criteria of foreign airlines, WestJet, for example, flies to FLL, MIA (30 miles), and PBI (45 miles).

I'm assuming you mean airports serving different cities, otherwise there are plenty of examples: LGA and JFK (Delta, American, jetBlue) are 17 km apart as the crow flies. DAL and DFW are 18 km apart. MDW and ORD, LGW and LHR, etc...

Of airports in different metropolitan areas, I can think of DCA and BWI 48 km apart (American, Delta, United, etc...).

British Airways, Lufthansa and Swiss all serve LHR, LGW, and LCY airports.

LHR-LCY 36 km
LHR-LGW 41 km
LGW-LCY 43 km

Several other airlines serve 2 of the 3 airports.

LUTON - STANSTED 23 Miles as the crow flies, both are easyJet and Ryanair bases.

also not sure if anyone serves all three of Taba / Eilat / Aqaba any more but at one of my former airlines we certainly flew to all three at different times, total of 13 miles apart, in 3 different countries

Given what BWI is short for, you'd get some pushback on people who say it's purely a Baltimore airport.

If you can cross water for two completely separate cities, HKG and MCM is less than 40 km by air. EDI and DND are less than 60km, and Loganair flies to both.

Allegiant serves both Plattsburgh and Burlington VT 20 miles apart. They really are the same market, just Plattsburgh is easier for the Montreal people and they have to be in Burlington to get that local traffic. It really is the same market just Allegiant serves both for different reasons and i think gets some deals from both airports, so it makes sense

And there's more airlines flying into both SIN and BTH as well. Offhand; Batik Air, Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air and Malindo Air; at least.

Just remember, LA and SF may have close airports as the crow flies, but getting there by car is anything but easy, especially LAX and SNA

In the case of SFO and OAK, back when I flew into the Bay Area regularly I switched to OAK because SFO would be routinely flogged in and delayed, while the flight into OAK was always clear. Ditto SJC.Landing at SFO might have been more convenient and a few miles closer, but landing in San Jose or Oakland would always be on time and that more than made up for lost time on the road.
