Spotting Around ORD?

Thu Mar 03, 2016 3:18 pm

Hi folks

So this is travel-related (at least to me, please move if wrong forum).

We're planning a coast-to-coast road trip on US Hwy-20 this summer, and that takes us pretty close to ORD (some others, too, but ORD seems like the one we would do some spotting, as we know the city already). If we pass through there at a pleasant time of the day with pleasant weather, I can see us stopping there for a break.

My question, obviously: where should we stop, or rather, is there a good place for spotting? I'm fully aware of the presence of Google and that I could find out myself, but I'd rather rely on the expertise of the people here.

On a related note, we're connecting through ORD on our way back, and as AA has just rescheduled our first leg PDX-ORD, it seems at the moment we might have quite some time there (I'm loath to change the long-haul at the moment, but might end up doing it nonetheless). Any good places to spot airside, or do we have to get out?
Otherwise we'll just hit the Goose Island pub...

Thanks for any suggestions, thoughts and anecdotes (on spotting, but general Hwy-20 stuff is always welcome)!

I usually go to this parking lot off scott street. It's on a dead end (at least the last time I was there). It is a good spot to watch landings on the 28's when they are in a westerly flow.

That is a great place...been there several times,....however...I thought that when 28C opened, 28R (formerly 28 & 27L) no longer had arrivals.

Check out the ORD Airport Watch website. These folks are registered w/ the local authorities and have vests to wear while spotting:

http://ordairportwatch.org/index.html

Some locations noted around ORD, where to, and not to spot in order to stay on the good side of the authorities.
Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.
