Wait Or Buy Now UA Tickets

Sat Apr 02, 2016 2:17 pm

You guys have given great advice to me in past and needing some help on a decision. I'm looking to fly from sat to Mia November 24-28. I know prices will be higher for thanksgiving but United has roundtrip currently running for $397. I'm torn if I should buy now or wait till summer to purchase at this price? Any advice?

United has a dummy schedule that far out. It will be subject to change and rarely do they have good fares offered this far in advance. You didn't say where you are flying from so I don't know if that is a good price or not. Compare fares to those if you book 60 days out the same route. November probably has higher fares now.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Buy it....it is a reasonable fare and then you don't have to spend endless hours worrying about it, and you won't get caught if prices rise.

You may run into a fare sale between now and S16 however I would say that's a pretty decent fare. On UA.com, what fare buckets are coming up? If it's only F and full Y then wait. If all fare buckets are coming up, buy now.

That's not bad especially for Thanksgiving weekend. If you leave on Tue Nov 29, you'll save a lot of money. Also, remember that FLL is only 16 miles north of Miami. Always worth looking into.

What I like to do is save flights that I'm interested in on Google Flights. It will record any price changes, so I have a better idea of what the fare can be.

Or in other words, G is the second cheapest fare bucket.

I helped someone buy a WN ticket SEA-SNA for September when they recently rolled out their schedule. $220 RT I think. A few days later, fares in that market dropped like a rock to around half that amount, and the people he was traveling with on the same flights got those fares. I've sort of stuck to the "There's no way to know the future" and "$220 RT is not a bad fare" lines, but he still seems to have buyers remorse. Nonetheless, he won't be spending the next five months scouring airfares periodically - he can just focus on the fun in the fall.

There's no way to win this game.
My rule with United is 90 days, even for my Thanksgiving and Christmas travel.
But sometimes, I come out behind.
So, my motto and suggestion is, if you're happy with the price, go ahead and buy it. Though I must admit, $400 for SAT-MIA seems kinda steep.

Ryan, I tend to agree with the comment by AA737-823 above (Reply 11), "there's no way to win this game."

If you're comfortable with the fare being offered by United at this time, go ahead and purchase the tickets. However, if it were me, I would be inclined to wait a little longer and watch the fares in the SAT - MIA market (as well as SAT - FLL and perhaps SAT - PBI).

Personally, I would set a deadline of somewhere around September 1. That time frame allows airlines to monitor seat availability in that particular market and make adjustments to their fares based upon supply and demand.

The fact that you are planning to travel on Thanksgiving Day is good because generally fares tend to be lower on the day of the actual holiday. By then, most folks have already traveled to their destination and more seats are available which airlines want to fill at discount fares.

Hope this helps.
