My Opinion Only: 737 Vs A-320 Shape

Tue May 03, 2016 3:40 am

Was plane spotting yesterday at SEA; near the FAA control tower by the old UA cargo building you can drive right up to the fence and observe. A very close, long examination of shapes and aesthetics confirmed my opinions: The 737 NG is relatively sleek, shapely, well proportioned. Looks a little bit racey. The Airbus narrow bodies appear a little stub nosed, ponderous, and the tail looks to be placed a few feet too far forward!!

I agree.

The only part of the A320 I have preferred aesthetically over the 737 until now is the more pointed APU / tail cone. I've never liked the look of that part of the 737 but the 737 MAX doesn't have that ugly part anymore with its 787 like APU / tail cone.

Now the 737 looks better in every department!

Regards.

Jesse

Seems like flame war material, let's all make sure this thread doesn't get out of hand.

I personally prefer the shape of the A320 family. I like how contemporary and smooth it looks in comparison to the pointedness of the 737. I'm not the biggest fan of the crooked tail, flat engines, rectangle windows, and 1960s nose cone. I can appreciate the 737 regardless though, it certainly was a game changer for the whole industry.

That's a good point, Lostsound. I have never viewed the 320 series that way, but I am open! To me, it has always been appealing that a machine that can travel nearly 600 mph ground speed, has a streamlined and aero appearance that LOOKS the part.

RE: My Opinion Only: 737 Vs A-320 Shape

Both have their pros and cons in my opinion.

737: I'm not a huge fan of the classics, but I think the -700 and -800 look great. The 737-700 is one of my favorite looking aircraft. It has great proportions regarding wingspan and length. The angled nose of all 737s is a classic and timeless look. I think the winglets make the plane look great from the side, the way they appear to rise up over the fuselage. I think the 738Max looks great as it is a bit taller. The winglets are really nice as well.

The -900 is much too long, and takes away from the sleekness of the plane. I also think the 737 would look better in general if it was a bit higher off the ground. When I see a 739 taxiing I think "slug." So long and low the the ground. The height works better for the 700.

A320: I enjoy the size and large volume of space this aircraft occupies. It is nice and tall, which accentuates the wide base and angles of the landing gear. I also enjoy how big the engines look on this plane, especially the A320neo.

I don't like dulled nose. It doesn't look very aerodynamic and like a dog muzzle or something. I also think the A320 is a little short. The A319 has a certain charm being as small as it is, and the A321 competes with the 757 in terms of length (among other more important aspects), but the A320 just looks a little short for my taste.

I generally prefer the look of the 737 because it looks more sporty to me. The A32X just seems very bubbly. However, at the same time, I understand why people dislike the look of the 737 - those nose sometimes looks really outdated depending on the angle, and the flat bottom engines aren't really that pretty either.

I also generally prefer the interior of the 737 to the A32X (although I need to see the new interior that Delta has in their A321s), but I really enjoy watching the condensation come from the A320 airvents. Not something I've seen happen on a 737.

The 737-200, -500, and -600 looked pretty jelly-bean-like.

But the thing about the 737 nose and fuselage: it's exactly the same as the 707 and the 727. These were iconically beautiful airplanes and their nose was part of their beauty. But the 737's position low to the ground and its history of stubby fuselages poisons its looks. Winglets help. A lot.

The 737 nacelles are really odd. The engine is circular, so why isn't the inlet? What's the deal with the forward extension of the leading edge making it looks all crooked?

The A320 has a fugly nose. I was never a fan of the 757 nose, but the A320 looks like someone punched the 757 in the face and it got more swollen. I understand that this gives better pilot visibility, but there are other designs that are less, well...fugly.

But its higher stance off the ground and the conventional-looking nacelles really help. The winglets, like the 737, REALLY help. In fact, winglets help just about any airplane. They went from a pretty 743 to a drop-dead gorgeous 744 just by adding winglets. Winglets helped the 757, the 767 and the CRJ/ERJ, too.

But overall, I have difficulty telling an A321 with winglets from a 757 sometimes.

I like stubby planes for some reason, so the A318, 736, and 735 are winners for me.

I am not sure what you mean by saying "the tail too far forward". The tail section? The tail fin?

In my case, it's easy to say: I love both of them (similar to blonde and brunette women....  ))))

Fuselage width is the same but the 707 fuselage is deeper top-to-bottom than the 727 and 737. Nose gear location is also quite different.

I prefer the aerodynamic sleekness over the A320 any day as a planespotter. As a passenger, I prefer the wider cabin of the A320- it makes the flight so much more comfortable especially on the window. While talking about narrowbody mainline aircraft, I also really love the MD-80 solely because of the 2-3 seating, and it's quietness forward of the wing.

Honestly I'm not really a huge fan of either, but if I had to pick between just those two I guess I would have to go with the 737. The short, "stubby" -100, -200, -500, and -600 aren't exactly what I'd call good looking, but they have character, in a "so quirky they're kind of cool" way. The flattened nacelles on the Classics and NGs add to that quirkiness. The A320 and its brethren, on the other hand, just looks like a really plain, generic, airplane. Neither comes close to the sleekness of the MD-80, however.

IMHO, both are as common and about as interesting as toast: means of transport (perfectly fine ones) and they look the part.

After a lot of flights on both 732/3/4/5/6/7/8/900s and A319/20/21s I'm disappointed flying both unless they are A318 or 736 which are genuinely rare, or 732s for nostalgic reasons. I'd far rather a 717/757/MD80/E175/190 as I prefer all of them aesthetically.

The A320 looks very plain to my eyes. The 737 has some features that are interesting to look at. Looks very sleek and sharp.

I prefer the looks of the A32x over the B737 series - always have - especially the A319 and A321. But I do agree with aerorobnz - other aircraft such as the B717 and EJets are much more fun and I prefer them as well.

If an airplane was a woman, a 737 is one with a pretty face, and that's about it... short legs and weird shaped "engines"... and let's not talk about her butt... (Max's tail is nicer)...

An A320 is one with an OK'ish face, but you gotta look at the overall package. Her legs are longer and better shaped engines... and yes, a nicer butt so far (we'll see how it compares with the Max)... Face? Boring initially, but her looks can improve with time or degrade... depends on your affection.

If you want sexy then the 757 is the narrowbody... pretty and expressive face, long legs, big engines and a nice butt...

Oh winglets? Well, now when you put winglets or what have you, it's like seeing a girl with her arms extended sideways and fingers pointing up... Both the 737 and 320 looks nicer with them

I am a bit biased towards the A320 Series, the flying experience is slightly more comfortable due to the wider fuselage, although leave it to the LCCs to cram in thousands of tight seats and make it horrible.

Also all the weird noises (PTU, etc) on the A320 make it more quirky and cool.

I must say, the Sky Interior on the 737 with the mood lightning looks mighty fine!

But I still take an A320 over a 737 anyday.

The nose secton is the same. The belly is deeper on the 707 and aft of the wings on the 757.

You can really see how the 757 is fatter (larger lower lobe) behind the wing in some pictures:

I personally prefer the 737 over the A32X, mostly because the 707 is my absolute favorite (and best looking) aircraft of all time, and the 707 and 737 share the same nose.
Here are cross sections of the 707 and 737 fuselage to illustrate the larger lower lobe of the 707:

The 737 looks great, always has but the NG is probably the best looking of all. Unfortunately the MAX ruins it for me, it looks like an old aircraft with lots of new bits thrown on to keep it modern.

The A320 is ugly in comparison, fat round nose and stubby looking fuselage but it does have longer gear and that means it looks better when landing, it lands softer as well. The NEO has improved it's looks dramatically, the massive engines and addition of sharklets look great and fit the frame well.

Now when it comes to on board comfort, the A320 wins every time for me, even with the 737 Sky Interior!
