Wed May 11, 2016 7:08 am

I have only one 747 flight under my belt

Aug 2002 MIA-CDG Air France 747-400 F-GITE

I should really bag a couple more 747s before they are all history (well, technically the 747-8 will keep on flying for a while, but, y´know)

I have chosen 744 flights specifically for that reason on TG/QF recently, even though it involved indirect routings. Once the 744s go I guess I will do the same for 777-200s, and A340s, but 747s are special to me.

My first 747-4 flight would be my first flight ever on LH from FRA-MIA in February 1997 at a couple of months old.

Have only flown 747-400, even though at the time SAA was still operating -200, -300 and -SPs.

First was in August 2000, Lufthansa 747-400 FRA-JNB
Since then only in 2003-2005 JNB-LHR-JNB route with SAA 4 times (once in upper deck economy) and BA twice (probably some of the most uncomfortable flights ever, since then vowed never to do BA again)

Wow! That's in deed a rarity. I once considered opening a thread to ask if people have once flown on a rarity for planespotters (which is fun, when you see all the planespotters outside the fence getting crazy and you are watching from the plane itself...)

Sorry for getting off-topic.

Did BA still operate the -100 in 1997?

A quick check of Wiki shows that the 100's were retired from BA in 1999 so its hard to know if you were on a 100 or 200. Maybe someone will know what was based in LGW in '97. As it was a route for bucket'n'spaders, it may well have been a 100 as I think BA had a tendency to send older aircraft on these missions (I'm happy to be corrected)

A little bit of sleuthing reveals the following comments

"YYZ-LHR, ORD-LHR and BOS-LHR were the last 741 routes in 1999, "

"I flew LGW-BGI on B747-236B G-BDXG, City of Oxford on 20th Sept 1995, and BGI-LGW on B747-236B G-BDXD, City of Plymouth on 30th Sept 1995"

It does appear more likely that the 742 was your machine, with the 741 perhaps in a more USA friendly config.

When I was a kid, my parents figured out that skiing in Switzerland was often less expensive than skiing in Colorado, so we took SR from JFK to ZRH. And we were almost always on the upper deck of the SR 743 (which was Y).

Yes, 69 Y class seats originally on the upper deck of Swissair 743s. The upper deck became J class cabin (also the 2nd main deck cabin) when business class was introduced a little later.

My first 747 flight was in November 1972 on SAA, a 742 from HRE (then Salisbury)-LAD-LHR.

I flew on every 747 variant SAA had after moving to South Africa, probably on every individual aircraft over the years including the ill-fated Helderberg.

I haven't been on a 748 yet but at least I have seen one at JNB since LH started operating it here in place of the 380.

I have also flown on various 747s with LH, BA and QF.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

My first flight on a 747 was in June 1999, KLM on AMS-MSP. Not sure if it was a 742, 743 or 744, since it was my second flight ever...

In any case, I've flown on 744s of KL and UA, 747-400combi of KL, 748 of LH. The only possible classics were on KL, summer of '99 but I'll probably never know...

I'm flying on a UA 744 on ORD-SFO tomorrow.

My first 747 flights were with Air China's 747-400, JFK-PEK and return in July, 2005. I had never flown on a large, longhaul plane before, and to this day I still remember boarding and walking back past bulkhead after bulkhead, past more rows than I'd ever seen, to find my seat.

The 747 became my favorite plane and since then I added several more operators.
KLM
United
EVA
Thai
Delta
British Airways
Virgin Atlantic
Air France

I narrowly missed Cathay Pacific's 747 last year when they switched my plane to a 777-300, but I think I'm doing pretty well flying as many 747 operators as possible. My next two 747s are booked with United and Qantas. It's still not overly difficult to find 747 routes, but with more and more airlines increasing their retirements of 747s, it will only get harder. I hope I am able to fly many more 747s with new operators while I still can.

The 744 is the only 747 variant I've flown on. First time was SFO-FRA-BLR on LH. The return flight would have also been 744s for both legs, but I missed my connection in FRA and ended up getting rebooked on a UA 772, which was actually my first 777 flight as well.

My only other 747 flights were Qantas LAX-SYD and return. At the time I was kind of disappointed because I was hoping to get my first A380 flight and they changed the equipment before my trip, but now I'm kind of glad I was able to get another flight on a 747 since there probably won't be that many opportunities in the future.

Remarkably, all of my 747 flying has been to/from Australia; LAX-SYD and return on NZ (1999-2000), and DFW-MEL / SYD-DFW on QF, couple of years ago.

PA's ship names for their Clippers were at times a bit...odd. I don't want the name of an aircraft to have "storm" in it.

My first 747 was a Bigtop of Singapore, from VIE to SIN

Since then I had a -100 (AF), -200 (QF, SQ), -300 (QF, SQ), -400 (QF, LH, UN), and my coolest, the mighty 747SP-86.

For me it was Virgin Atlantic, in the early days. LGW-MCO-LGW. Upper Class then was BIG purple recliners. The return flight to England was delayed greatly and others took the earlier flight. I was left with the nose of a 747 all to myself and excellent service. Just like a private jet, doubt that will happen again. :veryhappy:

My first 747 flight would have been just before Christmas 1984, on a 747-200 of CP Air. The flight was on "Empress of Canada" from Toronto Pearson to Vancouver. It was also the first time I'd been on an aircraft that showed a movie which was "Stroker Ace" starring Burt Reynolds and Loni Anderson, don't ask how I remember that. I've since been on 744's of South African, Cathay, and Air New Zealand. Great aircraft, unfortunately I doubt I'll fly on one again.

Here's my list

747-100 - didn't get a chance
747-200 - D-ABYM. At the time (around '96) this was the sole -200 flying pax in the LH fleet, think it was a combi.
747-300 - UTA from SIN-NOU, the aircraft was white with green doors and 'Big Boss' on the fuselage.
747-400 - LH from KUL to FRA via BKK.
747-SP - missed this.
747-200F - D-ABZF.
747-200SF - D-ABZA.

Miss these wonderful planes..

First is a non-rev positioning flight on SQ's 747-200 from SIN to TPE in early 1979. Second one, also non-rev, on same airline and type from KHH to SIN almost three weeks later.

My first 747 was a 747-200 (I think). It was on Pan Am in the late 80's from JFK to FRA. First 744 was on Qantas from LAX to BNE

I can be very short about this, I have never flown on a 747 in my entire life. I have been on two 747s but in both cases it was just a tour through the plane while it was on the ground.

My first 747 flight was on KLM AMS-BKK followed a couple of weeks later by BKK-AMS...

Did not enjoy those flights and put me off travelling on one again.....

I've been lucky enough to fly the 747 almost a dozen times (most recently LHR-SAN on BA), though my first flight on the type was from LAX to HKG on a Cathay Pacific 747-400 when eight months old. However, my first flight on the Queen of the Skies which I can really remember was from LAX to LHR on BA, back before the flight was operated by a A380. Such an incredible aircraft, and I don't know when I'll be on one again...
