Best Aircraft/Livery Combination

Tue May 17, 2016 8:37 am

Following a brief discussion on a separate thread, the topic of the nicest livery/aircraft combination was mentioned. I thought it would be a good discussion for a new thread as we all have differing opinions on what constitutes a nice aircraft and livery.

I'll start off with one of my favorites, I think you will be hard pushed to find a nicer combination than EI's livery on a Tristar. Even though it was only a summer lease, the aircraft was painted in the full livery, and boy was it worth it.

Hey guys,
For me, there is only one perfect airline/airframe combination... The last BOAC colour scheme on the VC-10. All time best in my opinion.
Second place must go for me to the Wunula Dreaming colour scheme (the original one with the red engines) on the Qantas 747-400, but it doesn't really qualify being a 'special scheme'...
An honourary mention must go to the Etihad A380 in its current colour scheme though. A great combination.
Locally here down under, I love the current Virgin Australia 737-700 combination, the current Qantas 747-400ER combination and the Ansett flying stars colours on the 727-200LR...
Cheers,
Bunumuring

One of the best in recent years has to be the bmi A319.

TE (NZ) DC10 canoe livery does it for me, asdoes the AR 'AA' livery on the 742. Honorable mention to UTA DC10 and NW Bowling shoe DC9-30.

Landor on Concorde. Supremely beautiful.

Or Poppy Appeal 2003 on Concorde.

Oh yes, the Etihad current colours look truly superb, especially in late afternoon or early morning like.

I know it's a controversial livery but personally I really like the new American livery on its widebodies, especially its 777s. 10 years ago I would have said Air Canada's livery on any of its widebodies, it was beautiful back then (watch it land in the sunset!), and it was for sure a radical move away from its very average previous livery, but it's becoming a bit stale now that we're used to it.

I find that few liveries are appealing on narrowbodies. The Aeroflot Superjet is not the worst in that category.

Basically anything other than eurowhite is a major plus in my view.

100% agree. I find that Etihad manages to make the A380 look a little less ugly than it is, even the nose, which is quite a feat. Maybe it's the gold-ish tone, maybe it's just that the tail is so eye-catching, whatever it is it works really well.

I couldn't agree more! EI's livery has never looked better than it did on an L1011. Another great combination (for me) is Iberia's livery on a 747. That livery has never been worn half as well by any other aircraft.

For the best aircraft/livery combination ever, I think the BOAC VC-10 is probably the winner. One that comes close to it is the early Lufthansa 707. Maybe it's there's something to that colour combination on an aircraft.

For me there's a number of contenders, but BA's 744s in the current livery take the prize for me. BA's liveries have all had a certain elegance to them, but this one resonates most with me because I barely remember the Landor livery. That said, BA's 747s did look smashing in it.

Lay thine eyes on it, and thou shalt see that it is wondrous! It honestly looks like a new bird in every sense.

The SQ livery is a classic, but in my opinion, it never looked better than on the A340-500. I feel lucky that I did get to fly in this thing for 18 hours at least once.

In my opinion, the A320 series looks the best with the new livery AF. A perfect combination for two (mostly) French operations.

There's no question the 737 looks best with the classic AS livery. Sadly I'm not much of a fan of the interim or new AS look...

This one could be controversial since not many liked it at the time, but I think the 747-400 looks best in the UA Rising Blue livery. The big tailfin makes the tulip pattern look so huge, and the blue belly complements the white of the 747 hump so well. I was sad to see the last one leave at SFO a few years ago.

I'd also argue that the A330 is one of the few aircraft types that makes any livery look good. There's something about the curves on the tail that I love. Anyway, here's an A330 in Star Alliance/SK livery.

Coming in at number 3 I have the 767-300ER wearing the 1987 Canadian Airlines livery. I had trouble choosing between the A320, 767-300ER and 747-400 but the 767 won out just. Just imagine how good a 777 would have looked!

Keeping with the (mostly) British theme at 4 I have the classic 1960s BEA red square livery on a Vanguard. Another livery that looked good on anything. Had trouble choosing between a Viscount, Vanguard and Trident

Aaaah yes!
The Canadian 'proud goose' livery on the 747-400 was amazing: a great combination...
As was the 'rising blue' UA colour scheme on the 747-400...
And the only 'eurowhite' colourscheme airframe combo I really loved was the original: Air France and the Concorde...

Wow! There have been some awesome suggestions here. I love the Landor livery of BA. I always liked UA battleship grey, and I personally loved the Rising Blue UA livery, especially on the 744. The first time I saw a 787 in the RJ colors, I literally stopped in my tracks. I always find the A330 an exceptionally elegant airrcraft, though some liveries really make it stand out.

I think you folks have come up with some beauties - well done! I nominate the aircraft, that I didn't even know was in this livery, until I saw it in IST in person. I was riding a bus out to a TK 77W to fly back home to IAH, and we pulled up to our a/c which was parked next to this beauty. I had never seen a more beautiful plane.

One last controversial submission. I know everyone hates the new Finnair li very, but I find it so elegant, especially on the A330. The GE engines on the A330, I also think are the most elegant on any modern aircraft, with their long spikey fairings - it just adds to the look for me.

Keeping with the (mostly) British theme at 4 I have the classic 1960s BEA red square livery on a Vanguard. Another livery that looked good on anything. Had trouble choosing between a Viscount, Vanguard and Trident

The wings painted red in that BEA livery were rather unusual. I can't recall any other airline that painted their wings in a bright colour, and in those days, they were rarely painted at all.

Liveries that are good on any aircraft:
Final TWA
BA Landor
Current Aeroflot

Best Combos
NW bowling shoe 747-200
UA Battleship 747-200
CO meatball MD-80 and 737-100/200
BOAC VC-10

And they hybrid V Australia/Virgin Australia combo they had on the 77Ws was the best combo IMO, they should've used it for their full livery.

BMI painted the elevators of their airbus aircraft red. That's the closest I can think of

A brief tally of aircraft so far, and we have a clear leader

747 has 13 votes
VC 10 and Tristar both have 6 (Ive included the IL62 in the VC10 count, due to their similarity)
3 votes goes to the 787 A32X/30/40/80

The rest float around on one or two votes.

On the drive into work this morning, this soon to be obsolete livery flew over me on finals into DUB, I think you could cover a 77W in mud and it would still be beautiful
