Your Shortest And Longest 757 Flights

Fri May 20, 2016 6:03 pm

It's quite evident that airliners.net loves the Boeing 757. People talk about how versatile this plane is -- how it serves is users well both on short haul, high capacity routes as well as long, thin, routes. So that made me wonder, what are the shortest and longest flights you've taken on the 757.

For me...

Shortest: MSY-ATL on DL -- 425 statute miles, 1 hour. The flight was so short and the plane so long the cabin crew didn't have time to finish their beverage service. They had to stop two rows before they got to me.

Longest: EWR-HAM on CO -- 3,818 statute miles, 7 hours 20 minutes. Some say that's too long to spend on a narrowbody, but since it was a redeye I took a sleeping pill after dinner and was asleep for most of the flight anyway.

My longest (and only) 757 flight has been MIA-BSB on AA. It was a good flight, aircraft wise. But I prefer wide bodies for anything over 4 hours. The redeye leg was particularly pleasing, though.

Shortest: ATL-SAV, 215 miles in 36 minutes
Longest: ATL-SLC, 1,590 miles in 3:49

Incidentally, both were on two of the oldest planes in Delta's fleet at the time- there was a kind of charm in it, though!

As an Icelander, more than 50% of my flying has been on 757s! That being said, here are my shortest and longest flights.

Shortest:

1. CPH-HAM (151 nm)
2. KEF-AEY (154 nm)
3. MAN-CDG (318 nm)
4. KEF-GLA (730 nm)
5. KEF-SVG (861 nm)

I was booked on KEF-BGO-SVG-KEF but we diverted straight to SVG due to snow on the runway at Bergen. KEF-BGO is 807 nm while BGO-SVG would've been the shortest at 86 nm. Next October I'm booked on Delta ATL-SRQ which clocks in at 386 nm.

Longest:
1. KEF-DEN (3096 nm)
2. KEF-MCO (3070 nm)
3. KEF-SFB (3051 nm)
4. KEF-MSP (2555 nm)
5. KEF-IAD (2430 nm)

Yet to fly on FI to SEA, PDX, YVR and ANC of which SEA and PDX are longer than DEN at 3148 and 3248 nm respectively while YVR and ANC are marginally shorter at 3080 and 2940 nm.

Regards!

Shortest Flight

AA SJU-STT, years ago, I think the flight was somewhere between 20-25 minutes.

My longest was AA MIA-BSB last December at 7:15. I'll be taking the same flight again next month.

Longest: PDX-MSP, over 1300 nm (straight line per GCMap is 1239 nm, but we detoured through Iowa and held for a few laps due to storms)

Haven't had the, er, pleasure of a long 757 flight before.

Shortest: PMI-LGW on Monarch at 813mi
Longest: AMS-JFK on Delta at 3643mi (About 7 hours)

At the time the ship I flew to JFK (N705TW) had been refurbished just weeks earlier and the cabin was in prime condition. it was quite a decent flight and not as bad as people say TATL 757's are. I suppose it may be a different experience if you're stuck on a worn out, prehistoric UA or US 757.

Shortest probably ATL-MCO, no doubt on DL, but I don't remember any details.

Longest would be DL PIT-CDG, which is IMHO a very pleasant flight even in Y (although I normally spend the extra couple hundred for Y+).

Two shortest: CMH - CVG (didn't note time) and PDX - SEA (22 minutes.).

Can't ID one longest, but have a few transcons on the 752.

I knew a few would have longer because of the SEA/SFO routes for IceAir..... Still be interested to see if anyone can beat the shortest.

Longest BFS-EWR, during the Icelandic ashcloud, flight time just over 8 hrs 15!   The aircraft departed and flew Northeast, over Scotland, the Orkney and Shetland Islands, before routing over the North of Iceland.

Shortest MAN-GLA on an Icelandair flight triangle, approx 25 minutes.

Shortest (and most exotic) was CDG-LHR T5 on EuroAtlantic during the BA cabin crew strike.
Have crossed the Atlantic a couple of times on Thomas Cook (a MAN-YYZ and a LGW-YYZ) but the longest was TXL-LAX. Huh? Well a TXL-EWR which is my longest sector (and maybe THE longest sector out there, now replaced by 767 year-round) followed by EWR-LAX two hours later, on the same plane. So I can say I flew from Berlin to LA on a 757, with a stop in Newark for fuel and immigration.

Quoting Yflyer (Thread starter):
Some say that's too long to spend on a narrowbody

Why is it too long? Don't understand the difference between a 757 and a widebody, except boarding, baggage claim etc is much faster when there's 170 people vs. 300. It's the same seat (unless you're on a 787, or a 10-abreast 777).

Some people, like me, would rather spend a number of hours trapped in a ~15ft wide tube than in a ~12ft wide one.

That's about it. I find wide bodies more comfortable to fly on, and on long flights there is room to stand up and stretch your legs without being in everyone's way. It's totally personal preference though. As you pointed out, the technicalities of the seats are usually the same.

I've never taken one across the Pond. My longest would be JFK-SFO, in that case, which is 2,247nmi. Done that both on DL and AA. The runners-up would be SFO-EWR (just did that a few days ago) at 2,229nmi and SFO-LIH and 2,126nmi. I've done SFO-LIH on DL and SFO-EWR of course on UA five days ago and on CO back in 1999 on my way to GIG.

Shortest would probably be DTW-ORD several times on both NW and UA, which is usually a 45-59 minute flight at 204 nmi (always a bit strange to depart at 1300 and arrive at 1259). NW usually used DC-9s and such on those flights and UA usually used their 737s back when I would travel that route with any frequency, but sometimes there was an oddball 757 and UA even sometimes put a DC-10 on that flight.

Similarly, NW made liberal use of their 757 fleet on DTW-MSP (459nmi) operations with both the 752 and 753 and also used their DC-10s on that route sometimes.

Shortest: I believe it was CMH-CVG on DL... This one was probably late 90s early 00s so not 100% sure, but it is about 110 miles. Second would be ATL-JAX several times, which is about 270 mi.

Longest: LAX-SJO, 2722mi & LAX-LIH, 2,615mi.
