Iran Air 747SP

Tue May 24, 2016 1:03 pm

Hi guys,

Does any of you know with a good level of confidence when Iran Air is supposed to retire their last 747SP ?

They are still operating them on the KUL-IKA route, and as far as I understand it's the only aircraft in their fleet that is suitable for this route since they recently got rid of their last 747-200.

I live in Singapore and I would love to do a quick IKA-KUL roundtrip just to experience the SP, but I'm afraid it may soon be too late.

Thanks !

The consensus is that she'll be retired 15 June of this year..

Indeed. There was a joyride planned out of KUL on 11 June, but they didn't get enough folks to sign up.

As much as I'd love to fly KUL-IKA... It's not particularly feasible for me.

Wasn't there a huge retirement / last flight event a year or two ago, and it just went on and kept operating afterwards like that retirement never happened? How do you know it won't be the same this time?

OK thanks !

According to Sam Chui, 747SP operations may get extended by 3 months:

Let's hope it's true !

Embargo's gone. Why fly this thing around when you can get any number of 777, A340, etc instead?

Well the 15th of June is basically tomorrow...not sure they can find a suitable replacement by then (let's hope they don't !)

I dont believe the Embargo is gone yet, it was only agreed to be lifted following the nuclear deal but has to pass US congress yet I believe. And there is no prospect yet due to the majority of Republicans in congress. In any case, 777s or A340s are not phased-in in a month or two.

Chances are reasonable the SP will be extended. I recall the Aseman 727s should have been gone years ago but are being extended every year with a special permission due to the lack of replacement aircraft.

Just wondering, can IR's A300 fly IKA-KUL? The A310 certainly could.

Loran

While the agreement hasn't been fully codified yet (and I don't expect to see brand new planes in THR anytime soon), my understanding is that second hand aircraft will be making their way to Iran soon.

IR recently retired their last 742. I'm not sure of a reason why they'd keep -IAC around any longer than they've planned to thus far.
