When Heathens Fly. ;)

Fri Jun 10, 2016 8:10 pm

So a friend of mine just went to Thailand. He took CA to get there and we pieced it together that he had flown on the 748i.

Neither he nor his girlfriend have any interest in aircraft other than as a necessary mode of transport. They just knew that the plane they were on was "huge" and had four engines.

And I was just stuck sitting there staring at him, flabbergasted. Here he flew on one of the most beautiful, modern, and rare airliners in the world...and he had no idea.

Pearls before swine, I tell you!

Ever had a friend cluelessly fly on a type that you coveted?

Last year in December, a cousin of mine flew RDU-YYZ-BOM on AC, and on the YYZ-BOM leg, flew on the 789. At the time, it was brand new to AC's fleet, yet she had no idea it was such a new aircraft.

On the way back, she flew BOM-DEL-FRA-YYZ-RDU, and caught the A388 from DEL-FRA and the 744 from FRA-YYZ. Again, all she said was that the planes were "big", and that one of them seemed new.

I've been lucky enough to fly one leg on a 747 (SFO-LHR on a UA 744), but I'd kill to fly on the 787 or A380.

I wouldn't do this to you, Doc, unless I was absolutely sure, but if he flew on CI, he didn't fly on a 748...

When I meet new people, and we talk about ourselves, they try to one up me in my airplane knowledge. I love it when people say they flew from ELP-SAT on "Southwestern Airlines" on a 747!

When I was in elementary school, the snotty popular girl went to Paris on vacation and I was jealous that she flew in a 777 before I did! A lot of other people I know have flown on airlines that I've always wanted to fly on like EK, KL, BA, etc...

Possibly, but what's even more impressive is "Pearls before swine!" guy here talking about China Airlines 747-8s!     Big grin

Not a friend but my parents. They flew with a chartered Linair Yak40 some years ago...

My sister has flown on the AA 77W about a half dozen times. I've never flown the 77W. My brother in law has flown on the BA 744 a couple times, again, I haven't. And they both didn't even realize it. My dad once flew on TP's A343 (I dream of flying on an A340) and only noticed when I told him, after tracking his flight.

I swear, some people...

About a decade ago my sister took a trip to Japan to visit a friend. Her RDU-DTW-KIX routing meant she got to fly on both a DC-9 and a 744. I was of course super jealous of both, while she didn't see what the big deal was. She was at least nice enough to take pictures of the planes for me. I have since gotten a chance to fly on a 744 a few times myself, but I never did get to fly on a DC-9.

Flash forward to today. She's now living in New York and is planning a trip to Croatia this summer. She's flying on LOT, on a 788 and a Q400. Once again I'm jealous (not that either plane is particularly rare, but I've never been on either before), while she couldn't care less.

Flew both legs of DFW-LAX-DFW on AA 772s last week. It did pain me a little to hear some people on the plane remark and wonder "why are we flying in a big plane?" for a domestic route. Girlfriend was wondering why I was geeking out about flying on a 772. Aside from my dad being a captain on the same fleet type (albeit with UA), she didn't know ahead of time about the free IFE/AVOD, so I'll give her a pass

In all seriousness, the only real "heathens" who fly are the morons who lose their minds in airports, cursing everything, especially the airline, for flight delays that can't be avoided (especially WX). You think the flight should just take off now and endanger the lives of hundreds just so you can get home on time? Take a seat.

My parents flew a UAX E175 yesterday. My dad was the one who got me interested in aviation, but he hasn't kept up with the latest aircraft, so I was interested to hear his impressions of flying an E-jet for the first time.

My mom doesn't know what an E-jet is at all, but she liked it so much when I flew one with her that she always wants to book one whenever she visits!

Oh, all the time.

"Dinky prop-job" referring to a Q400, but a CRJ was a "proper jet". Which is bigger? (I checked his itinerary!)

"Swore" she flew a DC-10 from STL to DCA. 3 years ago.

When we took my grandparents to HNL from ORD in the mid-70's Grandma hated the "cramped" UA 747 but the Ozark DC-9-30 from ORD to PIA was "quite nice".

When flying from ORD to LHR in the early 80's the blowhard behind me was complaining to his seatmate that "We're a 747 we should have priority" when we had to wait in the take off queue for 5 minutes so some smaller planes could take off. In a snowstorm and we were already two hours late. So were they most likely.

Flew Mississippi Valley SH-360 PIA-ORD on the same LHR trip and the woman next to me said she was SO glad we were in a jet for this flight.

A friend of mine claimed he flew Braniff from ORD to LGA in a 747. In the mid 90's.

Was told by a person at the gate in ATL a couple of years ago that she only flew DL because they only flew wide bodies. To STL.

My wife and kids know how much of an aviation nut I am. One day I had my daughter fly OOL - MEL on the (at the time) newly acquired JQ 788. I was so excited to meet her at the airport, watch it land and see her disembark. We embraced and I asked "So, how was it?!' nodding back towards the jet at the gate................"It was awesome! I took photos of the guy snoring next to me!"

My parents 11 years ago - we flew home on the BW 340, they were due to take it the next day, but it went tech & they complained the much delayed flight was an American plane with a globe on it and an engine on the tail - WO MD11. Type I never flew, would have killed for that tech delay the previous day...

AC did serve BOM but at least 30 years ago, for a few years in the 1980s or thereabouts. It was a stop on AC's route YYZ-LHR-BOM-SIN.

Tell your friends of all the things you would do to fly on such or such type (inconvenient connexions, paying more, transiting through unsafe countries, getting a visa for North Korea...) and watch them wonder if you're crazy !

I now have the habit of asking my friends for their flight number so I can track them on flight radar and check out what they are flying on etc.

Once when tracking a friend flying on FR , I noticed the plane making odd circles, and eventually it was diverted to a nearby airport due to thunderstorms. Quite fun to see her reaction on facebook afterwards, having landed at the 'wrong' airport

Well, my mum flew onboard Interflug IL62M, Sterling 727 and Caravelle, Maersk Air Boeing 720, and Malev Tupolev 154M back in the 80's - and when I ask her about those journeys, she admits not really caring about the planes back then, they were just a mere form of transport :O

Had a colleague from Izhevsk, Russia couple of years a go. She flew back and forth once in a while. I knew the flights into and out of Izhevsk were operated by Izhavia operating Yak-42's. I was jealous. She mentioned she hated having to fly on "loud and old Soviet planes". She'd "prefer Boeing". Argh.

This topic is great. I have two uncles that travel for buisiness who have flown a BA 741, CX A346, The SIN-EWR route, one of the first UA Dreamliner cross pacific flights, and multiple MD-11s. They still hate travelling and dont realize how special some of these planes are.

Honestly this made me laugh so much.

I recently flew PEK-KPB-LGW (it was very cheap) and my god UIA is awful! 767s at 8 abreast, terrible food, no booze, rude staff, no IFE, cramped seats, dirty cabin, and hundreds of very noisy Chinese tourists on the way to Europe. 2 of those flights in a row would have been hell!

My partner is an A-nutter-in-training and he and his family were planning a trip TPE to SIN. I was quite jealous when he said his mother was looking at booking Scoot (because it was pretty inexpensive) and they would get the 789. In the end they chose CI ... in the meantime I've booked myself a flight on the A359 to HKG this Friday. The other half is a little jealous because I get to fly on a brand new A359 while he and his family get the A333.

He was also quite jealous when he realised how often I've managed to park my rump in J class ... so when we flew to SGN last year, I booked us J tickets (didn't hurt that they were on sale for only a hundred or so US$ more than the Y+ tickets).

My mom has flown on a couple types I've yet to get on, 748, A380,777. She flew 744's and 757's before I had the chance as well. She isn't into aviation that much but did really seem to enjoy flying the SQ A380 on the upper deck (Y-class). She also liked UA's 777 much better than its 744- lack of IFE on a TPAC was not so great. She also got to try out SQ's 744 before they were gone.

Both my parents got to fly on a LH 748 when it was subbed on EWR-FRA (this was a couple years ago before LH upgraded permanently from the 744). They did remark how "new" it seemed compared to the 744 FRA-EWR a couple weeks later, but other than that they'd never have known the difference.

Many MANY years ago when a young lad, I used to do "day trips" to fly on cool planes.

I remember flying IAD-DFW-IAD on a (sort of) BN Concorde. The R fare was slightly higher than F, and in those regulated days BN had to charge the higher fare. I recall sitting at the gate in DFW and watching many last minute business men decline the $6 extra fare to fly on Concorde to wait for the B727 the next hour!!!

Also, I flew on DL from YUL-BOS to connect to a NE FH227 to fly BOS-EWB-JFK. The DL flight was to be a B727-200. But ... a CV880 rolled up in YUL to take us to BOS. Some people actually complained about flying in such a noisy old plane!!! (I didn't ... and it was my only time flying on a CV880 as they were retired shortly after).

FWIW I fly on CA a lot and I plan to fly into SFO on the CA 748i on my next trip to the USA.

To answer your question, my previous supervisor didn't give a hoot about planes but his bf at the time took him on a Concorde flight! He gave me a Concorde souvenir pen he got from flight but he didn't even note the actual date, reg # or anything as he didn't care about planes. He just knows it was a BA Concorde flight to New York from London...

Also, my brother doesn't care too much about planes and he got to fly on the QF 744ER Wunala Dreaming... I'd happily take any QF 744ER flight...

One of my sister's idiot friends used to take pleasure out of making me jealous by telling me what she's flown on.

She once tried to make me jealous by telling me she had flown on "the Airbus". And on another occasion she told me:

"We went on one of those new Dreamliners to Gran Canaria".
"Oh really, what airline was this on then?"
"EasyJet"

Mr Kai Tak, I used to handle them. The things their manager would tell the weight and balance people were totally unsafe, IMO. While I realize the weights and loading will not be 100% correct, the margins of acceptable error were not acceptable by me. I told my company to dump them as soon as they could.

Several years ago, a friend of mine flew LHR-KUL on an MH A388. When I asked her what it was like she said... "I loved it, they left donuts in the kitchen and we could go and take them whenever we wanted".. Absolutely oblivious to the fact she was on an A380.
