Honolulu (HNL) 8R Departure

Tue Nov 29, 2016 10:24 am

Can anyone explain the procedures for 8R departures out of HNL? When is the hard right turn initiated after takeoff, and for what reason? As well as getting out of Hawaiian airspace.
My posts/replies are strictly my opinion and not that of any company, organization, or Southwest Airlines.

It's called noise abatement. Getting out of Hawaiian airspace? That would take probably at least 45 minutes as their FIR boundary is quite large in scope. Using 8R or the Reef runway helps keep the neighbors happy:)

Departing aircraft must turn to their assigned heading within 2 nm of the end of the runway. This procedure applies to runways 8/26 and 4.

It is to keep Waikiki Beach quiet. We wouldn't want to disturb the tourists.

I once had a hotel room in Honolulu and you could see the runways in a distance from the room. I enjoyed sitting in the room watching the sunset with planes taking off and turning.

In 1968, I was working near the Aloha Tower in downtown Honolulu. There was no reef runway (8R) back then and the frequent sound of freedom would come screaming over downtown trying to gently turn away from Waikiki. The culprits: Heavly laden KC-135s with their old engines leading a 4 ship of fighters deploying to SE Asia. It happened every single day in those years. Noise complaints were ignored....and it wasn't a big issue. They still remembered Pearl Harbor.
