Kansas City (KMCI) ATC Question

Thu Dec 29, 2016 7:42 pm

I was listening to the Air Traffic Controllers at KMCI yesterday and I noticed that instead of saying "This is Kansas City Tower/MCI Tower/KC Tower" they would simply say "International Tower". At other airports across the nation it seems that controllers always say the name of the airport and the word "tower". For example, DFW Tower, Miami Tower, SFO Tower...etc. Is there a particular reason why ATC at KMCI says "International Tower" or is it just something that ATC personnel at KMCI have developed a habit of saying?

Thanks for your responses.

I don't know for sure but does Kansas City downtown airport already use "Kansas City" for ATC? Maybe it's a way to differentiate the two?

If you look at the airport taxi diagram, you'll see that for radio use, it's assigned name is "International Tower". To use anything else is to go against what the FAA/FCC has assigned it as it's radiotelephony call.

MKC is "downtown" tower, I think that MKC used to be Kansas City Tower but that changed. International was likely just a good way to make sure pilots knew they were talking to the correct tower

DFW Tower uses "Regional Tower" as I recall.

According to Airnav, DFW uses "DFW Tower" but the TRACON uses "Regional Approach" for approach control.

The two Kansas City towers use International and Downtown to distinguish themselves. Just like the two Chicago tower use Midway and O'Hare to distinguish themselves.
