SQ31 SFO-SIN routing queries

Mon Mar 06, 2017 10:24 am

Hello,

I was looking at the flightpath taken by sq31 and can see that it takes a more northerly route on some dates and on others, it just cuts across the pacific. What gives?

For example on Mar1 : https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/sq31#c9b5d90 , flight time 17:15
but on Feb26 : https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/sq31#c93e9a2 . flight time 16:19

Why did it take a more northerly route on Mar1 ?

The biggest factor for routing is winds. On a long flight like this catching or avoiding a jetstream can mean an hour or more in flight time difference.

On a side note, this is one of the most asked questions on this forums.

Thankyou @Starlionblue. I thought soo too, but this was a huge deviation I cehcked on flight UA1 and it too used a similar route on that day. So it must be the wind.

That's pretty rare for sure. Don't think I have seen that kind of flight plan more than a few times at most.. If anything they usually get you further north into Russian airspace then down through China and in the back door so to speak As Blue said its the wind.
