Idea for jetways

Mon Mar 27, 2017 10:14 pm

I think a great idea for loading bridges aka jetways would be to have soft music playing. Music helps in sto res so why not jetways?

Wouldn't soft music encourage people to linger? ;)

Point.

On a more serious note, I doubt airports would want to invest in this. The jetway is one of those places people walk through without being asked. Typically you wouldn't invest in mood music without 1) wanting people to linger or 2) wanting people to have a more pleasant experience in order to enhance brand perception. Case 1: Shopping. Case 2: Passenger lounge.

This would quickly turn into another source of self promotions by the airline/airport. The last thing I want to hear is more commercials. :shakehead:

No, please, for the love of all that is musical, NO. As it stands now, the jetway is one of the few places one is NOT bombarded with constant announcements, blaring commercials, blinking television sets, and other visual and aural pollution. Cannot we, the public, go ANYwhere without being bombarded with sound, visuals, or other sensory clutter? (Does Delta still bombard the boarding passengers with Lincoln and Coca Cola commercials?)

It's a novel idea for sure. But as with all business decisions, how does this help the airport's bottom line? It would seem like a rather expensive venture, even in smaller airports such as ACY, only for the 30 or so minutes passengers are in the jetway during an aircraft turn. If anything, I would invest in better air conditioning, because those things get hot, especially in the summer.

Sounds like a good idea, but not something the everyday passenger would remember and therefore not every beneficial to the airport.

The basic failure of "market" mechanics.
Same for "frequency uber alles". allows competition
for better profits for individual participants
but the overall system efficiency is abysmal.

And if the a/c is running its APU or god-forbid doing a single-engine turn, what then?
Is just me, or is flying not as much fun anymore?

Christchurch plays some jungle/nature sounds in the jetway. That was pretty nice to hear on arrival. Was last November, don't know whether they changed it by now.

I'm not sure if they still do it, but CHC (or was it AKL) had their air bridge interiors fitted with floor to ceiling graphics of native New Zealand bush/forest. This was then overlaid with audio of native bird song and general bush/forest sounds. Made for a very pleasant welcome to New Zealand feel.

The air bridges at CHC are currently fitted with a vineyard scene (once again, floor to ceiling), but I'm not sure if there is any accompanying audio.
