RR Trent XWB - does XWB stand for anything?

Sat Aug 19, 2017 7:53 am

I know it was named after the A350 XWB (eXtra Wide Body), but does it actually stand for anything? I can't find any reference.

My guesses: -

eXtremely Wide Bypass.

Actually, that's all I could think of.

When have RR stated that XWB stands for Extra Wide Body for it's engine?

The Airbus marketing team never stops promoting cabin width even if it results in a nonsensical name of an engine.

RR haven't said it, it's just that logically XWB stands for extra wide body. Airbus A350 XWB - XWB stands for extra wide body.

It's the engine that is used on and designed specifically for the A350XWB.

Probably more memorable than Trent 1700 or something like that...

I wrote what XWB stands for in the opening post. You've not taken us any further forward than an assumption. The Elmer Fudd contribution was better because it had some thought behind it and was funny.

In the case of RR, XWB is not an acronym for anything. It's just the designator that the engine is designed exclusively for the Airbus A350XWB. It would be like calling the engine for the 787 the Trent Dreamliner instead of Trent 1000.

The engine for the A350 Mk. I was to be known as the Trent 1700, so I am not sure why RR did not continue with it when Airbus revised the airframe or used it instead of Trent 7000 for the A330neo.

I'm not over thinking it, I asking if there's anything more to it. Pretty simple.

No, there is nothing more to it. You won't find RR statements clarifying the meaning because it is fairly obvious to everyone why it is called the Trent XWB.

The closest evidence is probably RR calling the Trent XWB a "tailored solution" for A350 XWB. In this sense you can probably say XWB stand for A350XWB
It's pointless to attempt winning internet debate.

If it helps, we have the same acronym floating around in the project name for the landing gear too, it's just a copy and paste of Airbus extra wide body.
