Canada's airports runways aren't long enough

Tue Aug 29, 2017 10:35 am

Here's a report from the Hamilton Spectator on that topic. Following AF's landing accident at YYZ in 2005, TSB investigated and called, back in 2007, for runways to have a longer "end-safety areas". Per the Spec, not much has happened on that side despite 16 runway-overruns since 2005. Apparently Transport Canada is only now consulting on that matter while Canadian airport don't meet the international standard.

Ironically, this will likely result in SHORTER runways as airport authorities displace the thresholds to establish the RESAs.

At both YUL and YYZ, space doesn't to be an issue, except perhaps where the AF's A340 ended that could require major work or indeed shortening the runways. YVR south runway has lengthened at both end now which could prove sufficient in situation like when CP DC-10 had to abort take-off.

An 300m extended end safety area will have made little difference in the AF358 overrun.
The difference would have been eliminating the piss poor crew decisions that would of resulted in the aircraft touching down in the proper place or initiating the go around/missed approach as they should have done. Pilot error/ training issues.

8400 feet 4R/22L at JFK seems to work .

I came here to say this too. :) If we can massage this finding to get jets on the island I'm there.

Main runway at YHZ was extended in 2012 to 10,500ft.

Surely this is long enough.....

Both of YOW's main runways 07/25 and 14/32 have had their RESAs upgraded at each end to meet ICAO minimums. There was lots of pressure on the YOW Airport Authority thanks to Trans States and their 3 separate E145 overruns at the airport.

04/22 is only for GA traffic.

This is slightly misleading; the main issue seems to be the RESA dimensions (RSA in the U.S.), not the runway length itself.

Agreed. The title to the thread should be changed.

YTZ is one of the few airports in Canada that truly desires a longer runway...and they're prevented from even doing so, all in the name of keeping a few NIMBYs (not to mention AC and WS) happy that don't want the 'screaming noise' of a CS1 drowning out the pleasant ambiance of the Gardiner Expressway. :banghead: .

Well since the report's title is "Canada’s airport runways aren’t as long as they need to be" I deliberately took a short-cut since it's wrong and doesn't mention the safety area at said runway's ends.

I believe there are plans to build RESA, if it's not already done.

Do any Canadian airports have an EMAS?

This article says Nav Canada is refunding $60 million to user. Maybe they should length RWYs with those extra funds instead.
