I just passed through ORD on American and was in the G gates. I noticed that only CRJ and ERB jets fly from these gates and in the L gates they put their 175s . Is this a gate spacing issue or something else? Just curious. Thanks!

Reason:Typo fixed
Basically yes. How the gates are currently situated the 175's wingspan (especially the newer ones with the more outward canted winglets) would overlap the adjoining gates in G. It could be remedied by removing some gate by eliminating the A/B gate (i.e. G6 instead of G6A and G6B) but you'll loose a gate in the process. Ultimately it's just easier to move the 175's to L concourse (but they sometimes utilize K1-2 and use to use H1-2) since AA consolidated more flying and those gates were surplus as surplus can be. Also once the "New" L gates open supposedly that's were the 175's are headed too.
