Manufacture test flights?

Sun Jul 29, 2018 2:17 am

Hey guys,

I am aware that airports where Boeing tests aircraft often include MWH, PDX, and visits to outlying controlled airports in the PacNW and California like PSC, SCK, Sacramento area airports, ect while long-range testing may be done down to parts of Texas, RFD, or elsewhere. I am also aware that most Boeing aircraft are either painted at BFI, PAE, RNT, or PDX, with some leaving RNT without being painted and 737s almost never returning to RNT after departure.

I am very curious as to the operations of other aircraft manufactures. I am especially curious as to what McDonnell Douglas's normal test operations were like when they were active with the likes of the DC-8, DC-10, ect all the way to the MD-11 and MD-95/717, as well as Airbus. But really, I am curious to learn about any manufacture, be it Mitsubishi in Nagoya, Cessna in Wichita, or Bombardier in Montreal.

Thank you for any input you guys may have!

BBD does production test for commercial planes out of Mirabel, Business Aircraft out of Dirvsl or, for Globals, out of Downsview. They have dedicated airspace for test flights. Learn and Exoerimental Test is at ICT.

Cessna in Wichita does almost all of their Citation and Caravan flight testing in Wichita. Runway water ingestion testing was always done in Roswell, NM.

Thanks guys! I was able to find out that Convair and Douglas both used VCV/MHV for testing, but otherwise I am still struggling to find good information and am very interested in whatever info you guys on A.net may have! :)

Mitsubishi is using Moses Lake in Washington State for MRJ flight testing, and have set up an auxiliary base there. They have also opened an engineering facility in Seattle, and the MRJ has visited BFI on occasion

MD used Yuma and Palmdale for a lot of flight test work They also did some interior completion work out of Mojave back in the mid MD11 production cycle. Having existing staff at these airports available for unexpected probblems like a blown tire was paramount to eliminating big delays.

I believe the G7000 test program is run from KICT? I was crossing the country last week (in a BD700) and saw a flight of 2 test aircraft pass in front of me at FL410 somewhere over Nebraska. ATC pointed them out so certain it was Global Test. Pretty cool.

Every once and a while at GSP we see 787 test flights from out of CHS.

There may be a paint facility there, not sure?

Boeing sent a 787-9 to ASP for hot weather testing back in 2014.

Boeing also goes to COS for high altitude Autoland testing and IDA for Backcourse approach testing.

Boeing will go to KOA for icing testing (believe it or not) and FAI for cold weather test.

They will use other airports for crosswind landing testing too. The 737 Max was in CYS and one of the smaller Texas airports like MAF or AMA this year for that.

I’ve seen the Embraer E2 Projects out at COS as well a few times

Nope, no paint facility at GSP. Any 787 at GSP is usually doing touch and goes on the runway.

Airbus does its test flights out of BFM in Mobile for its US assembled aircraft.
