ARFF Stations

Tue Oct 09, 2018 2:21 am

Any of you work at an commercial airport that has one or more of their ARFF stations completely segregated from street level traffic? One of the two houses at IND is cut off by taxiways and runaways. I heard that at shift change (around 7:00 or 8:00 AM local) that the on-coming crew meet at the second station and they are ferried to the first house to relieve that crew and then those guys get ferried back to the second house so they can pick up their ride and leave. As a traditional firefighter, that would drive me crazy.

I can see how this could go in the operations forum or civil forum.
Flying is the second greatest thrill known to mankind, landing is the first!

The ARFF station at FLL is roughly midfield between the movement area and the terminal ramp. They park in an employee lot and are shuttled back and forth across the terminal ramp area during shift changes.

I think it’s fairly common at large airports. Heck, all the airline and terminal employees park remotely and ride shuttle buses to work.

This is not uncommon at all at very large major airports where the fire station has to be centrally located to meet FAA-mandated emergency response time requirements (which I believe is 3 minutes from the moment of dispatch to arrive at the scene within airfield perimeter). Some of DEN's ARFF stations are "landlocked" so to speak.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.
