Who makes airline’s fleet decisions?

Sun Nov 04, 2018 1:25 pm

Often people say CEO X prefers Airframe Y.etc but does the CEO actually have much input? Who has the most say on a airlines fleet decisions?

People tend to much emphasis on what the CEO says in a public forum as actually being their own view point. The CEO is the visible face of the company that in many cases is acting as a spokesperson for the detailed analysis, technical requirements, financial planning, and negotiations occurring through multiple internal functions within the airline.

The Board of Directors, with advice from Flight Ops, Airports, Tech Ops, Legal, Procurement, Marketing/Scheduling, and various other departments. Most airlines will have a team that goes over RFPs and possible new aircraft, running test plans etc to generate the data. Ultimately the BOD decides.

You mean 41 year olds, 14 year old kids don't know what an internet forum is. And yes, these 41 year old act way to often like 14 year olds here. But do some airline CEOs, also when it comes to fleet planning.

When it comes to making deals it will often th CEOs that will do the final negotiations and they sign the contracts.

In British Airways there is a Planning department which includes a team of five in Fleet Planning. A decision on which aircraft to acquire (and how it is to be financed) is a complicated one which requires input from several other departments including Ops, Flight Ops, Commercial, Engineering, Legal and of course Finance. The ordering is done by the holding company which for BA is IAG.

All of the major carriers in the US at least have a Fleet Planning department, and those departments are often assigned a Fleet Planning counterpart team at Boeing, Airbus, etc. to provide a sort of dedicated listening ear to how to best cater to the carrier.

Teams writing proposals. Various scenarios for fleetcomposition in various 10-20 year network developments are compared. Usually a compromise is found that poses the least risks in most scenario simulations. That's why the most flexible types win.

Fleet Planning, at least where I work has nothing to do with aircraft procurement, but rather, analyzing how best to use the various types in fleet within the network.
