On Finnair Airbus A320 drop-down displays

Sat Nov 10, 2018 1:58 pm

Hi there,

I was just flying from Lisbon to Helsinki on Finnair OH-LXD, an Airbus A320-214, and I was left wondering what the tech powering the drop-down screens might be.

Judging from the nature of the glitches on some of the screens and shadowing artifacts on others (which I sadly didn't take a photo of), I'm pretty sure the signal path is analog, but what on earth might be generating graphics like this? (The fonts are old-school, but not fixed-width; I'm reminded of Borland Graphics Interface from back in the day.)

The flight progress views weren't much better either, though at least no text overlapped with other text.

Not going to inline the image because it's pretty big, but here:

Those displays have existed since AY has had A320s, I think. I've also seen glitches, so analog. But I haven't seen the screens recently, or maybe not paid as much attention. Do they still have these?

The in-flight position map is the earliest basic version of the "Airshow" system. Whether the connecting flight display is from Airshow as well I am unsure.
If you flew today, thank a Flight Dispatcher!

Yes, it was an option for the airline. I remember Swissair had it, Delta did not.
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.
