Inefficent air corridors in China

Thu Dec 13, 2018 10:14 pm

Look at these 90-degree turns... Why can't they address this issue once and for all? From an enviromental point of view it's disastrous. This adds up to hundreds of tons of wasted fuel per day... Why can't they manage air traffic like the most of the world does?

Airspace in China is incredibly restricted - I something like 30% is open for passenger traffic with the remainder being reserved for the military. In comparison, commercial airlines can use 80% of the airspace in the USA. If you look on FR24, you can see that many airplanes in China are flying in narrow corridors so there's pretty limited space as it is, hence why the somewhat odd flight paths there because they have to fly around the restricted areas.

This will have to change at some point though since there are often extensive delays. Every flight I took in China when I was there last year was at least 2 hours late and with air travel rapidly increasing in China, something will have to give.

When the high ranking officials (especially military officials) think issues in the way of 70-year-old Soviet planning methods this is what you get. The majority of airport/police officials in China still thinks civil plane spotting is illegal spying after all!

And an airport of size of PVG can have only three SID points (or four maximum, can't remember the exact figure) and you have to share it with SHA - guess what you get?'

Without turning this thread political I have to say welcome to China - this is the way officials think! Civilians are nothing and they don't care.

You might get another shock when you check the air route from Europe to South Korea in China. Madness. Also air route from Europe to Hong Kong via Chengdu and Wuzhou. Lots of wasted time and fuel. Extreme inefficiencies.

The Chinese airspace is probably the worst managed airspace in the World.

It's not just the restricted airspace, but also the way it's used. There is nothing more frustrating than flying through, to or from China, especially when the weather gets nasty.

You know something is wrong when you have to declare a mayday because ATC won't let you deviate around Wx.
I'll do my own airline. With Blackjack. And hookers. In fact, forget the airline.

China just doesn't do "turn right fifteen degrees for traffic. It's all about 90 degree turns, when they could get by simply with a lateral offset and possibly an altitude change. That, and they use different altitudes, requiring a conversion chart for those of us too simple minded to memorize and too math poor to calculate. Nice folks, but China is a pain in the butt.

China needs many reforms to grow the GNP per capital. Airspace reform is but one. They need more lanes. Diagonal flight paths, in particular to/from hubs. A 2.5x increase in civilian airspace might be enough.
