Why do baggage handlers always put luggage upside down?

Mon Dec 17, 2018 2:29 pm

So yesterday, when I was sitting on a plane, I was watching the baggage handlers load the luggage, and they were placing each and every bag, hard or soft, upside down. Even if it was right side up, they would take it off of the luggage cart, and turn it upside down, before placing it on the belt that led up to the aircraft.

Once I was at baggage claim, my carousel had multiple flights' luggage on it, and even coming onto the carousel, every single bag was upside down.

Why do they do this?

Speaking as a former ramp agent, I did this because a lot of times bags with wheels would have a tendency to want to roll back down the belt loader. Putting them upside down prevented the wheels from rolling on the conveyor belt

What was said above. Bags with wheels will roll back down the belt. Hard-sided bags with four wheels on the bottom were one of the few exceptions.

Nothing better than having a bag roll back and slam into you, especially if the belt has a little ice or snow on it. Not so bad on a 320 or 737, but man...a bag rolling down the belt on a 77w is like a shot from a cannon.

As answered, an upside down bag doesn't roll, and is easier to grab. Even in containers, it's usually easier to flip them.

Also when stacking bags, it’s easier to stack them face down because that way you have a flat surface to start your next layer. If you put them on your backs you would have the top which is usually overstuffed and rounded which is hard to stack another bag on top of.
Lighten up while you still can, don't even try to understand, just find a place to make your stand and take it easy
