Inoperable runway lights in APW

Sat Jan 05, 2019 2:21 am

So our flight NZ997 to AKL got cancelled due to “inoperable runway lights” in APW.
Has anyone heard of something like this before? Apparently a day after it is working again but how can the airport solve this problem so fast?

At least NZ is operating a 787-9 to fly the passenger back to AKL :-)

I'm guessing most people has heard of broken lights before. :grin

One of our planes had a bit of a problem in Kinshasa a few years ago: big thunderstorm that tripped the power for the runway lights. They kept being told that it will take just a few minutes to get back on, but it took a while.
The captain was lulled into accepting their status report, that almost bit him in the rear. Next time I'm sure he'll divert a lot sooner, as that could've been a spot of bother as he already used some diversion fuel.

Not that uncommon for machinery to damage a cable and you get some lights that no longer work.

The fastest solution normally is to run the cables above ground to temporary lights.

Damaged underground cables can require a lot of conduit and cable to be dug up, replaced, waterproofed, and commissioned.

I held for 45 minutes a couple of months ago due to inoperative runway lights. ATC services were also out, along with communications and the approach. The airport was able to restore them, and we landed.
