One of the ground crew had (not sure whether ear muffs or headphones) muffs on, something dangling from the muffs, and had a cable coming from the nose wheel well, it looked like it was attached to the muffs. The guy went under the well, doing whatever, came out, dragged the long wire out and stood a couple of meters in front of the aircraft, before going back under the well. He did this quite a few times. What was happening?

After pushback and engine start, the pilot flying will say "Start is complete. Cleared to disconnect." This is the signal that we no longer need any ground services, so the engineer can disconnect his headset and walk away from the aircraft.

Normal procedure for ground ops with the 737.
