It depends on the payload being carried and the takeoff weight of the frame.

At their respective MTOWs and loaded to their respective Maximum Zero Fuel Weights in Boeing OEM spec and using Boeing ACAP mission rules, a 777-200ER can fly a bit farther than a 747-400, but the 747-400's payload is a bit under 10,000kg heavier. Reduce the 747-400's payload to that of the 777-200ER, the extra fuel the 747-400 could then tank should give it the edge in range,

What’s the actual range of the 777-200ER compared to the 747-400?

He just answered that question. "Range" encompasses multiple variables, but Stitch basically covered the relevant permutations of the question. As with all questions about "actual" range of a plane, the answer is "it depends on how much stuff you want to move." That's why payload-range charts exist.

Boeing 747-400 7,285nm
Boeing 777-200ER 7,065nm
Boeing 777-200LR 8,555nm
Boeing 777-300ER 7,370nm

These will be maximum ranges which will not allow for a full payload.

Define maximum range.

I know that a B747-400 has flown LHR to SYD which is 9184nm (empty delivery flight)
and a B777-200ER has flown BRU to MEL which is 8968nm (BA with VIPs only)

so your maximum can be bettered.

The first Malaysian 777-200ER 9M-MRA was flown on a record flight (prior to delivery) from KBFI to WMKK (Kuala Lumpur) the wrong way (eastbound) very lightly loaded for 10,823nm (20045km).
